Old images of Jarrow, in North East England.
Known for the Jarrow March/Jarrow Crusade of 1936, when 200 local men marched to Parliament in London. Life in the industrial town had always been hard, but the closure of the Palmers Shipbuilding Yard on the Tyne was to cause great economic hardship across the community.
Further back in time, the Venerable Bede wrote his famous work, the Ecclesiastical History of the English People, at his monastery in Jarrow. You can still visit the ruins of the monastery today.
