Join me for a walk around the historic heart of North Shields, one of the most famous settlements on the mighty River Tyne, with almost 800 years of history to be found, from its early origins as a fishing village to its bustling fish market in the modern day, its elegant 19th-century High Town, and a collection of captivating wooden dollies!
On our walk around North Shields, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including the Shields Ferry, the River Tyne, South Shields, the old Crane House, Collingwood Apartments, St. Peter's Steps, Clive Street, Liddell Street, the Prince of Wales Tavern, The Wooden Dolly, Bell Street, North Shields Fish Quay and Market, North Shields Low Light, Clifford's Fort, The Wooden Doll, the High Town, Fish Quay High Light, Laurel Park and the statue of Stan Laurel.
Thank you so much to the following sites which really helped me out in my research of North Shields:

My Nan lived in the sheltered accommodation in that glorious building near the ferry landing, on that bottom corner of Borough Road - you even walked past the windows of her flat. The interior of that place was magnificent in its own way, my brother and I as young'uns would just wander around the corridors of that place - amazing. Though my parents are from the area, I grew up in Lancashire. But often spent time up here as a child. This part of North Shields is very familiar to me, when we stayed in that sheltered accommodation building in the guest apartment, my Dad took us along that stretch of road towards the fish quay many times, telling us all about the history of it. It was fascinating and me and my brother loved it. I'm sure there's a photo of me and my brother next to the wooden dolly next to the Prince of Wales pub somewhere, will have to dig that out! Thanks for this - it's also interesting to see how things are now. I've no excuse really as I live in Gateshead now, so it's just a stones throw away.

Good evening! Thank you so much for tuning in for this walk around one of the River Tyne's most famous towns: North Shields! As for some bonus info about North Shields, you may be interested to know about the nickname for its locals. England's North East is full of interesting local nicknames, from Geordies in Newcastle to Sandancers over the river in South Shields, but people from North Shields are often called 'codheads', or even 'fish knabbers' in relation to the town's long history of fishing!

Fantastic walk and really informative and well thought out narrative - thanks I enjoyed it so much. Coming from a family who all hail from South Shields and having lived overseas since the mid 1980s Im still really drawn to Tyne and Wear. Memories of going to the fish market with my grandparents in. the 70s and tales of the North Shields fish wives are still vivid in my memory. Appreciate the effort you've put into this video. Cheers from Malaysia!

I remember going into the pub called The Jungle when I was about 18 or 19 wow that was some place back then about 1970 time .we were doing a job on a ship that was in for repairs .we spent most of our time drinking whilst the ships engineers got the job sorted for us . We were going home pissed at teatime .

Lived in North Shields for about 9 months before moving around and eventually moving back to America. Absolutely loved it there. Especially those seagulls that are so loud early in the morning!

Interesting as usual, we caught the to ferry to Bergen Norway from the Port of Tyne which is jusy a bit higher up the river from your walk although still classed as North Shields, sadly it no longer runs as it closed in 2008.

Yes I remember doing the crossing to Bergen great weather and sights of Bergen roads through the mountains and the Fiords realy enjoyed it . We then did the Stockholm one later . Lovely day going out from North shields . But a nightmare coming back with the mountainous seas crashing on the ship.the only time I've been frightened.i could see those corridors down below turning into lift shafts through the night so I went upstairs to one of the restraunts . It was full of people sleeping on the tables with the same idea as me . I spent 3 hours sitting next to the life boat petrified ..never again .

Great walk, we did it around the same time, maybe even the same day! had been to a hospital appointment and decided to have an explore, usually only walk the low town but parked right next to the High Light (the caravan was amazingly lodged in!), discovered the Stan Laurel statue but weren’t aware of the Dollies, will have to check it out again. Thanks for the history. 🙋🏻‍♀️

I lived in North Shields in the 70s and 80s but I left because of the amount of burglaries and crime. That area down by the quay side was really quite rough, I would not have dared walk down there at night. It's obvious a lot of money has been spent in that area and it looks lot more upmarket now. I hope crime is a lot better too.

@joline2730
@joline2730 2 года назад
Just to put you straight - that is NOT fog. It is a "heat mist". It happens obviously because the sun is hot but the river is cool. My dad being a sailor, could tell the difference by looking, and knowing which was which. You usually get 'fog' in cold weather, not hot. Most people call it fog, but there is a difference ! 🙂
@LetsWalkUK
@LetsWalkUK 2 года назад
A very good point well made! Apologies for the mix-up there - it certainly confused me on my visit to North Shields, and not being a sailor I took it as that classic 'fog on the Tyne' I've heard so much about :) Thank you very much for watching and for that insightful comment - I do hope you enjoyed the video!
