Great video! Very factual. I bought my 98 XJ stock for $1,000. Probably have an additional $10,000 in it. But it's still just a high mileage, well built, 22 year old 4x4. Love my XJ! Can't deny that it's been a financial mistake for me.

I bought my 96 about a year ago because of my dads 96 I grew up in. I paid about 5k for my jeep, but it is a 4x4, 4 door, 4.0, 5 speed, with power windows, and no rust. Both were white without the company logo so I guess they didn't want anybody to know what they were using them for. I was blown away at the capability off-road and outright abuse these things took as I put my parents stock XJ through its paces in the backcountry around Vancouver, Canada as a kid. Even had to have my Dad pull me out of a tough spot in my 76 FJ40 one time. Solid, comfortable, reliable and very capable. Considering today’s inflated vehicle prices, it’s only natural that such a great little 4x4 would be going for higher prices.

I think there’s a few factors making them go up. First: there’s nostalgia. Those of us who were kids in the 80’s and 90’s grew up wanting one. Now we have disposable income and are making that happen. Second: because they’re so good off road, and because they went through that period of being dirt cheap, it’s hard to find clean, unmolested examples. It’s like trying to find a 90s Acura Integra that hasn’t been given the fast & furious treatment. When you find one, prepare to pay big for it. I’m just slowly working on my ‘01 XJ while still driving it. I need to replace rocker panels but that’s really the only rust on it. Replaced rear suspension and kept it at stock height. Eventually just gonna clean it up and replace what needs replacing.

PSA to automakers: Roof pillars don't need to be humongous in order to provide a strong structure. It's called 1.5 to 2" DOM tubing and some gussets. Outward visibility and driving positions suck in almost all modern crossovers. The Renegade has roughly 7 inch wide A pillars. I think most people gravitate toward trucks for this reason.

Current Cherokee is in a stop production mode because of a glut that is not moving, take a clue FCA.

I think it has a lot to do with nostalgia. I’m 42 and I already miss the old days! The old days for a gen X’r like me is the 80’s and 90’s. I had an XJ back then as well. Unfortunately flippers have taken notice and that had driven prices up as well. On BAT, they are almost always “acquired” less than a year ago and it’s usually “from the family of the original owner”, blaw blaw yeah right. If you really want one, keep your eyes peeled and scan Craigslist. I’d stay away from the rust belt though.

I have had 3 Rangers ‘83, ‘97 and now a ‘19 crew cab. All of those trucks have (had) their pluses. That said the older Rangers right now only have the ability to scrape the side of it along a wall or tree and not have the guilty feeling of having done that. And yes I worked on plenty of the ‘98 and newer in my days at a Ford/Jeep/Isuzu/Saab dealer and couldn’t justify the ride torsion bars gave the truck. But yes there is tremendous value in the older stock of trucks still out there and with the aftermarket scene there is no reason to buy an overpriced Jeep.
