In the same vein as Maverick Hunter X, I was displeased with my takes on the Metal Gear games on NES, so we are back in the next editorial for the summer, the first of three MG editorials, to amend the old videos!
Since it’s a Konami game, I’ve always joked that the three other parachute guys are Bill & Lance from Contra, and the Rush’n Attack guy. They just ran off to their own missions/games.
Higharolla Kockamamie was another pun on a world leader at the time, Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran. The Iran-Contra affair was still big news at that time and stupidly, Konami US probably thought parodying it could boost the game's sales
I played both versions but played the nes one when it came out, the msx many years later, never felt it was superior in anyway and just seemed to me people prefered it over the original because hideo was not involved. In my opinion the nes gameplay felt smoother, had better music, more levels, and a great story, the only thing i would complain about even back then was where is that walking robot that was on the box art?
I didn’t expect you to revisit these. My thoughts on the NES titles still stand. They aren’t good. But there was some sort of effort put into them so that’s something, I guess.
I've played all the 2D Metal Gear games on their original platforms. I would say that, though the MSX2 version of Metal Gear is far superior to the NES version, there are a few things that the NES version did better. First, the translation. Although both are terrible, the NES translation is better than the MSX2 one, though the NES version has far funnier mistakes (I feel asleep!). Obviously the 2006 translation for the MSX2 version is far better, but it's worth noting when comparing like with like. The NES version also lines up your cards next to each other in the menu, which makes them far easier to access when going through them to open a door. Finally, the NES version allows you to walk under cameras if you're right next to them. This would get adopted as a regular feature in the series. Interestingly, the Japanese MSX2 version did tell you which item you picked up. It was the European version that dropped it. Because of limited cartridge space, it could only contain 56% of the original Japanese text. Snake's Revenge is a very hard game. The sidescrolling sections are a good idea but poor execution. With a few fixes it could be quite a good game, it's almost there as it is. Overall, I would rank them as Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake > Metal Gear: Ghost Babel > Metal Gear (MSX2) > Snake's Revenge > Metal Gear (NES) > Metal Gear (DOS) > Metal Gear (Commodore 64) The DOS and Commodore 64 versions are especially awful, with neither even being possible to complete.
Loved the NES Metal Gear as a child, though, I always wondered why you never actually faced Metal Gear, especially when it's prominently displayed on the box. Had no idea until the internet age that the superior MSX version existed. I still say the NES version has the superior music.
So Snake's Revenge was my first ever exposure to the series so when MGS came out and made no reference to SR, I was REALLY disappointed. Hilarious now, in hindsight. How I managed to beat SR back in the day is beyond me.
I have to disagree here, because for me Snake's Revenge is superior to Metal Gear 1 on NES. My biggest issue with that first game is that it's too damn buggy, Snake's Revenge has more improvements. While those side-scrolling levels can be a pain and the opening Jungle stage is frustrating, with a little patience you can learn the patterns and then it's pretty easy and the rest of the game is epic it feels like a real action adventure game, whereas Metal Gear 1 on NES is just riddled with flaws at every corner, it's story is poorly translated and it just feels like a chore to play. Oh and of course there's no battle with Metal Gear thats pretty lame.

Ugh... I'm really liking your channel, I'm watching every of your videos from the oldest and right now I'm on this one buuuuuut I really hated those "special guest" reviews. I like what you say, how you script your reviews but placing another person really breaks the peace. When I saw you did reviews on Zelda games I was really happy yo see what you had yo say about those games but the moment that other guy steped in I got out. I didn't like him at all (no offense whoever you're). And suddenly I was happy again watching this video and near the end that guy pop out again... Ugh, skip it on that moment. I know you're not going to remake this video just to take that guy out but I really don't like those "co-oo reviews". He has something to say? Great let him make his own review and quote whatever he wants yo debate you but here is really a break for me.
You know, I'm not really a fan of collabs as much as I used to be anyway. There a bit of a hassle to make. Hence why I haven't done one in a while. Might still happen every now and again, but I see what you are saying.
I've made it through Metal Gear NES twice and I've never been able to stomach Snake's Revenge. I think it's one of the worst games I've ever played. If you REALLY wanna torture yourself, play the DOS version of Metal Gear. It's just a port of the NES one but so incredibly broken and glitchy that I don't even think it's completable! I've never gotten farther than the first forest in it because it's horrible, but I hear that certain items just plain don't appear! I haven't found a complete walkthrough or let's play of it either, so I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if it was plain incompletable.
Hey j, could you review the Megaman zero games? They're pretty much x4-6 but with smoother gameplay and no x. I'm sure you've played them, but a review would be great!
Wait, why did he show Dracula’s curse in terms of translation? Cause I don’t remember the translation in Castlevania lll Dracula’s Curse being bad though I do remember Simon’s Quest having poor translation
@@jaspermcminnis5538 Yes, compared to the original MSX versions. It's more noticeable on the first game, Metal Gear 2 was already a slower playing game. If you look at videos comparing the nes version to msx you can tell. The msx version should be just as smooth as the nes one. Edit: I meant to add that it's not the worst thing in the world to deal with considering the type of game these are.
Isn't that stupid that the awful translations was common during that time and then in 2001 Megaman X6 does the same stupid Typo that these old games used to do.
so this is somewhat on topic. personally, something i dislike about mgs twin snakes compared to mgs1 is the lighting, it just looks so bleak and unappealing, in the original game, shadow moses was bright and very appealing to the eyes in terms of colors, something that got carried over to the rest of the series, the biggest example of this is in the rex arena (it's essentially an arena) in the original it was a mix of blue and light-gray witch was very appealing but in twin snakes it's all dark-green and dark-gray witch's not that appealing, same goes with snakes sneaking suit from dark blue and gray to black and dark-gray and i honestly don't get it, mgs2 pulled off that bright look with the tanker, big shell and arsenal gear, especially big shell, and mgs3 speaks for itself, so i don't get why they did this, is it because the game was running on sanity's requiem engine? three other minor aspects i don't like is first: the dialogue pauses, like seriously, in the cutscene with ocelot it looked like he honestly forgot what his next line was so he kept spinning his gun to remember and liquid kinda does that as well to a smaller degree, also secondly: while i don't mind the more action-oriented cutscenes (heck snake did an epic dodge in raven's introductory cutscene in the original game, twin snakes was just adding to that), i wish they would explain it, like maybe snake's suit is a much weaker variant of solidus and arsenal tengu's muscle suit's or something like that, i mean considering all the unnecessary script changes in the game i don't see why not, but even with an explanation it would cause some ludonarative dissonance because snake can't do this stuff in game, and finally: why the fuck are snake's hips the same length as his shoulder's? literally no other version of snake had this build and on top of that, snake's build was based off of juan claude van damme who also didn't have pronounced hips, so what the hell? it just looks weird.
+U1GX well i didn't play either game, so what does that say? but overall, no i do like twin snakes, for what it lacks in colors and lighting it makes up for it with either awesome or hilarious cutscenes, and as i said the last three aspects i don't like are minor nitpicks.
