Some photo enhancement reveals better details on how this original mud wagon was designed and built. Building and restoring horse drawn vehicles often brings its challenges in determining what was originally correct for each vehicle.

Back when I was 10 thru 12 yrs old, living in Eureka CA, there was a couple just down the road that had horses and I was allowed to help feed them. Well what I thought was just a big barn was Full of Wagons, Coaches, Buggies, all completely restored!! So very Awesome to see, and be allowed to board them for rides every so often. That would have been the mid 60s then. 🐎🐎🐎

Sometimes it helps to cut up some old cardboard boxes and use masking tape and just "mock it up" in cardboard, so that you can see how it looks and how it goes together. You can easily make changes and compare the results to your pictures. Good Luck with the project.

I have to say I really enjoy all of your videos. I am a history buff of sorts and like how you have great attention to detail and historical accuracy. If one were to compare your craft to regular wood working, cabinet maker, furniture maker, I'd say you are the "Norm Abram" to wheelwrights. Even though the borax wagons are industrial wagons, after watching the videos, I would consider them "fine furniture". Thanks for the history and keeping the wild west rolling.

I am sure some of these rebuilds can sure be head scratchers. What little I know of your character from your videos, you seem a modest and humble person, so when you talked about the second and first row passengers' legs intertwined, naturally, my sordid imagination made a crude calculation of this coach's cargo of people. Dave, while you are taking clues from both the existing carriage box remains and the photo, I am struck by one thing that will become important. With the front passenger seat being backwards, which. Makes sense , being under the driver’s seat, the back corner of the driver’s seat should be be curved inside the coach, as it becomes safer for when a passenger is rising from that seat, to prevent bumping their head against a sharp corner. From what I have already seen in this series, I would consider this to be a “ Frugal “ coach, with sears open underneath that can allow small bags to be stored and the two forward facing seats to be removable so it could also be a package wagon. This is dye to the bottom front of the box being square and not curved as the one in the photo. i have also noticed that the roof bows in the photo extend beyond the sides of the coach body.. this makes sense so if a light rain occurs, it would roll away from the coach interior and it leaves the possibility for roll up sides with Ising glass windows for heaver rain.

I really enjoy the analysis of this old photo and your attempt to recreate it, with your best knowledge. With regards to the 45 deg. angle brace at the bottom of the rear-facing seat, it might be possible that it's not actually a brace or bracket, but it might be a hinge piece of a box or piece of luggage that is stored under the seat. Might take a closer look, especially if there is no evidence of a 45 deg. brace. Just my thoughts!

I believe you said that this coach doubled as a freight wagon. If that is the case is it possible that the front seat hinges up and can be locked into place in a vertical position. The legs would also be hinged at the front of that seat and would "float" with gravity into a vertical position when the seat is dropped into a passenger configuration.

This is so awesome. I have an original mountain wagon in little better shape than this. More complete and assembled. But all has to be rebuilt. Ive thought about contacting you about doing the wheels. But I really want to try doing it myself if possible. Have elm cured for hubs, hickory for spokes. Still need ash and other woods to complete the rough stock materials. The knowledge you share in these videos are is more valuable than the wood. Still trying to figure out dish angles and tread angles ect for the rebuild. But kind of getting it sorted with books as well as details you provide. It's more than just entertainment really. It's education. Thanks.

That is some great sleuthing. Also, great community here that took the time to enhance the images as well. Quite the team. For my two bits worth: if there are no fastenings for the front seat leg, what's the likelihood that it would fold up for cartage space. Perhaps the middle seat gentleman passenger has his foot on a cross plank used to laterally stiffen the seat legs. That is often found in other folding seat types. As a wild thought, perhaps a leather strap(s) is used to prevent the leg from slipping to the rear and spilling the passengers. Anyway - great content. Love this project, just like all the others.

With no indication of a mount on the floor or sides, how that rear facing seat was mounted, one might imagine that it was a fold down jump seat mounted to the rear of the drivers seat frame. There might be some wear marks, where the legs landed and maybe a set of unexplained hinges in the iron works. I would think that this seat would be smaller than the other two, like maybe 12- 14 inches.

Thanks very much for sharing your analysis. I still disagree with the concept of a third seat. If the man in the back seat has his foot against the brace for the front seat, which I think is actually the duster of the man turned towards the camera in the front seat, it is still possible to comfortable reach out his leg as he appears to be a pretty large man. Just my opinion, my wife is probably right, I am an argumentative SOB, but don't tell her that. I will not mention it again as the decision is yours. I've ridden in a coach (just around the yard at old west theme parks) and they are really bouncy. Add in ruts and gopher holes and big rocks, I'm not sure that second seat floating would be safe? Even with people sitting on it, wouldn't it bounce along, maybe on to another passenger's foot? I would think that middle seat would need to be secured some way. 💖🌞🌵😷
