The North Bridge is an historical site in the Battle of Concord, the first day of battle in the American War of Independence. The current wooden pedestrian bridge is a replica of the one that stood at the day of the battle. It and nearby sites are now part of the Minute Man National Historical Park. When the first shots were fired, the British were on the east side (1836 Obelisk) and the colonists were on the west side (Minute Man Statue). Ralph Waldo Emerson called the first shot of this skirmish the "shot heard round the world" in his 1837 poem "Concord Hymn".

The Old Manse was built in 1770 by Rev. William Emerson, grandfather of writer and lecturer Ralph Waldo Emerson. In 1842, the American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne rented the Old Manse for $100 a year. The Hawthornes lived in the house for three years.

I had the great pleasure of visiting the site a few years ago. As I am from England the site held a different feeling to me than the other visitors who were mostly American. The first shots of the War of Independence was fired here. To me it was a civil war between countrymen. To this day the British and Americans are very close. We resolved our differences. We stayed in Boston and I have to say I absolutely loved the city. The people were very friendly and I will always have a special place in my heart for that wonderful city. God Bless America and Great Britain.

Gary 65 I’ve spent a good deal of time in and around London over the years and have a great appreciation for the UK. Here in New England, we have a great deal of our own culture that came directly from England. In my opinion the New England area (Boston included) have much in common with England even if we have messed up the language a bit :)

The actual first shot was about 7 miles away from the bridge in Lexington wasn't it? The bridge in Concord is where they put the monument / statue right?

Mike Honcho there has always been a healthy debate about where the first shit was actually fired. I think you’re right that the first real battle was in Lexington. That said, concord did a better job of branding their town as “the place” ... but I honestly don’t have a dog in the fight 👍

@@mikehoncho8268 No. The Minutemen were fired upon at Lexington Green largely as the result of a random firing of a musket setting off attack by the Regulars. There was only scattered return from our men. The British marched on to Concord where they were met by a larger force of militia at North Bridge. At one point in the exchange they fired live ammo and killed two Minutemen, including Isaac Davis who is represented by the statue. A Major Buttrick who led the militia commanded "Fire, fellow soldiers, fire!" The first to do so fired "The Shot Heard 'Round the World" commemorated in the poem.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post this video. My eyes welled up with tears as I watched it. I was able to visit the bridge a couple of years ago and words can’t describe the feelings that ran through me. Joyful yet sad at the same time as I thought about what our government has turned into.
