During the late 1800s from the 1860s-1899 the islands of Samoa was a constant war zone thousands Samoans armed with modern rifles battled each other throughout the islands European and American soilders also saw action during the Samoan wars one example is in 1888 Samoan rebel forces attacked and defeated a German invasion force sending the German marines back into the sea or another example in 1899 where Samoan rebel forces scored another victory against the Papalagi this time the Americans and British were badly defeated and were forced to flee to the cover of there war ships many other forgotten battles were fought throughout the islands the death toll on all sides of the war is still unknown to this day but at least 20,000-30,000 Samoans joined the war and choose sides on who to fight for the 1800s was a crazy forgotten time in Samoan history Samoans killing Samoans Samoans killing Palagi Palagi killing Samoans it was a brutal time that must not be forgotten

I only learned about this part of our history on the internet. Sadly we don't teach in our schools in Samoa and we only focus on the colonization period. I didn't even know we had a civil war, It's like they want us to be the victims and don't want to acknowledge our own role in why we got colonized by fighting amongst ourselves.

There is some misconceptions with the war parties. Mataafa men were actually made up significantly of Malietoa Talavou's descendents from le Maota Pouesi who were at the time engaging in a House on house feud with the Malietoa Tanumafili side of the Malietoa clansmen. The Malietoa Tanumafili I men were descendants of Malietoa Moli from the House of Poutoa. The rival to the House of Poutoa was the House of Pouesi, or the descendants of Malietoa Talavou, the brother of Malietoa Moli whom was contesting the ascendency of the Malietoa title. The British and Americans sided with Malietoa Moli's descendants of Malietoa Laupepa and his son Malietoa Tanumafili I whose son was the recent Samoan Head of State, Malietoa Tanumafili II. The last Malietoa Tanumafili II is from the Maota O Poutoa, or a direct descendant of Malietoa Moli. The Forces of Mataafa, which was an amlagamation of Atua and Aana districts warriors alongside the Malietoa Talavou descendants from the Maota O Pouesi included the Apia Warriors of the Maota O Pouesi Warriors which routed many of the British and American Marines in Apia. These Warrios are in actual fact....MALIETOA, albeit, from the Maota O Pouesi side of APIA VILLAGE directly, as Warriors from Apia and not Mataafa from Atua and Aana respectively. I am a direct descendant from the Pouesi clan from Apia village, from the Sa Tuiletufuga family. It is my ancestors who routed the British and Americans at Apia in 1899. What changed for the Sa Tuiletufuga family was when the New Zealand expedionary Force landed on August 29th 1914. The Apia Pouesi Clan then conceded and sided with the Occupiers and became the first Samoan Police Force. My Great Grand father headed the Samoan Police in Apia as Le Afioga Tuiletufuga Liuomavaega. 1898 died 1939. He served the NZ Police even during the Mau movement. He is also alleged responsible for excorting Tupua Tamasese Lealofi to Asau in 1924. He is interned at the Magiagi Cemetery in an unmarked grave which I had visited.

Wait so your descendents were apart of Mata'afas army?cause I remember Malietoa Tanumafili was on the British and Americans side in 1899 known as the loyalists army?

@@malietoasamoa1301 Malietoa Talavou and Malietoa Moli's descendants were enemies. Malietoa Talavou's descendants also included the Apia based Maota O Pouesi descendants of Malietoa Talavou's son whom married the taupou o Apia, their offspinngs inherited the titles of Papali'i and Tuiletufuga. The Pouesi branch of the Malietoa clan (From the Sagauga fa'alupega o Apia ma Vaimauga) were notably from the Maota O Pouesi. Hence the Lotu Pouesi in Apia. The Warriors from Apia, from the Pouesi Malietoa family, actually fought for Mataafa rather than for Malietoa Tanumafili muamua's forces in 1899. They were the primary assault group against the British and American forces in Apia. Apia village, whose Matai Alii is Seumanutafa, was also part of the Sa Tuiletufuga and Sa Papali'i of the Pouesi Branch of the Malietoa clan, or the direct descendants of Malietoa Talavou. Again, the rival between the descendants of Malietoa Talavou and Malietoa Moli would play out in 1899. Mataafa became instrumental in the continuation of this rivalry. As the saying goes, the enemy of my enemy makes you my friend. Blood wasnt thicker than water as it seems amongst the Malietoa kinsmen, then. Dont know about today? But, Mataafa had capitalised from the Malietoa family rivalry to their advantage. Malietoa should have consolidated their family feud. So now Mataafa have ascended at the expense of Malietoa Talavou's descendants and in particular at my anscestors expese with the Tuiletufuga family from Apia, and their diaspora throughout the world today. What changed for the Sa Tuiletufuga family was when the New Zealand expeditionary Force landed on August 29th 1914. The Apia Pouesi Clan then conceded and sided with the Occupiers and became the first Samoan Police Force. My Great Grand father headed the Samoan Police in Apia as Le Afioga Tuiletufuga Liuomavaega.
