the general sentiment from the section of the Pokemon community that isn't nostalgia blind is Pokemon scarlet and violet would be hailed as probably the second best mainline pokemon games of all time if they didn't run like an n64 game
Nah, they've got more problems than just their horrible graphics. One of the biggest problems is the fact that there's no level scaling at all, and the intended order has you zipping back and forth across the map in a super unnatural path. That alone is a huge detriment to the gameplay. Generations 5, 4, and even 7 are better than 9.
@@FieryMeltman "and even 7"? But gen 7 was great. Well...Sun and Moon were great. Ultra decided to bash the plot with hammers until it fell apart. Who follows the "intended order" in an open world game?
The best part about Second Dark Matter Battle is that the battle is taking place as the ENTIRE GOD DAMN PLANET is hurtling towards the sun. Dark Matter is CRAZY- it literally one-taps MULTIPLE legendaries, including Mega Rayquaza and ARCEUS HIMSELF. Absolute trip of a game- you straight up die and go to hell at one point.
Super Mystery Dungeon is criminally underrated. Yes, EOS is better. But the rest of the series is pretty damn good as well. Even Gates To Infinity, generally considered the "worst" of the series is good for what it is.
@@tonberry2670 Agreed (though I do feel the remake of Rescue Team DX was overall pretty lazy, they barely even did ANYTHING to the soundtrack which is baffling for an HD remake)!
All the stuff about Bede and "the queen of fairies" is because he was basically forcibly recruited by the fairy gym leader, an old crone (probably the oldest gym leader we've seen, at 88) who was looking for a successor. What catches her eye? His coat. She adores pink, which to her is less a color and more of an attitude. Bede had also been a complete asshat until that point, and when we see him next he's lightened up considerably and is in a brand new gym outfit. If Rei and Akari are the same as Lucas and Dawn is unknown. In Masters they're treated as different characters but Masters is also an established multiverse so it's possible even in the lore that they're them from a different timeline/universe. The Dim Sun music got sort of memetic status after Jaiden Animations made a video about Shadows of Almia and had an extended portion of her character dancing to that theme. The anime in gen four was good until they utterly dropped the entire Galactic plot. I don't know who that man was but he wasn't Cyrus. Cyrus is a fascinating chatacter with nuance to his motives and personality and the anime made him so one dimensional. I'm not sure how Arceus being a universal creator makes it somehow unbeatable. The Titans created the universe in Greek mythos and they still got utterly bodied by the Olympians. Necrozma is also very ill-defined as far as its origins, as you say. It devours light but it also doesn't seem to act out of malice, rather a necessity to survive. Ultra Megalopolis was also weird since we only see one city. Supplimental lore often contradicts itself. Like, in PLA there's these rifts that randomly open up that are basically holes in spacetime. In Masters they say that those started happening when a rift opened over Mt Coronet. But in the PLA Anime, Hisuian Snow, they're shown to have existed for YEARS before that happened. The original Sun and Moon story was so much better than the Ultra story. Lusamine was a much better character too. The "XD" in "XD Gale of Darkness" is supposed to stand for "Xtra Dimension" but what this has to do with anything is beyond me. The Shadow Lugia in it was designed by James Turner, his first design for the franchise, and he says he has a soft spot for it to this day. In gen 9 he designed some human characters at long last! Also in gen 8, being British, they had him design the teacup and teapot mons haha. I don't think it's really Koga's theme that's a meme but more Patterz's reaction to it that was since he had dismissed the possibility thay it could be any good and them immediately got hit with that flute Oh god i get the name thing. I've got an incomprehensible Russian surname and it's NEVER said correctly. Or spelled right on mail. My mom also has a hyphenated name that's part Kenyan and part...I think French (ah I looked it up later: it's Italian. We're neither Italian nor Kenyan) and oh god the spellings she gets.
In retrospect 'extra dimension' could reference XD as a 3D pokemon story mode and the first to be exclusively a story mode (Colosseum was just as much advertised for its stadium-like battle mode)
@@BJGvideos If I had to guess: A. With how even the cover of the game and attract mode is laid out, they honestly thought the discount stadium battle mode was just as vital to the game and not forgotten by most players, and stadium was already a well-established 3d series. Or B. They just had a better opportunity and incentive to use that idea and had to sell the experience on its own merits (& Shadow Lugia)

I don’t apologize for pronouncing Arceus as Are-see-us bc the Jp name is pronounced that way and is a reference to Zeus and with the established lore + addition of leaked lore the influences from Greek mythology only fuel that ❤️ I blame the localization for separating from that and switching up their initial pronunciation to the K sound. :(
Glad he reacted to peak pokemon music, Area Zero is probably one of the only pokemon themes that's really blown my mind since Gen 4, and Giratina's theme is so unique and fitting for Giratina itself
If you're ever gonna do more tracks next time, I suggest Arceus' themes from DPP, BDSP and Legends Arceus *exactly* in that order. Legends takes a whiiile and it is by no means the most pleasant, but when I say that it is, by a WIDE margin, the most artistic and creative Pokemon track of the series I am not kidding.
Not sure if you'll see this, but if there was one game you wouldn't expect to hear hard tracks from and you should check out. KIRBY especially the boss themes
The alola games are a story about invasive species. Ranging from the whole alien invasion subplot to the presence of pokemon like yungoos and ratatta, and the whole backstory of solgaleo and lunala, to the player, who recently moved to the region.
Since everyone is talking about the leaks, those stories that got viral were meant to be taken as pokemon myths and they were made for gen 4 (the gen they introduced arceus and the pokemon creation mythos) these were also made to be pokemon counterparts of real life myths and fables from around the world (zeus for example was a player that seduced woman transforming himself as other people and animals) As for music recomendations for the next reaction I suggest "last battle N^n" from black and white or "lullaby for trains" from black and white aswell Great video Zero! Keep cooking 🔥🔥🔥
Colosseum and XD are Gen 3 and a bit of Gen 4, and have Shadow Pokémon (which are basically Pokémon whose souls have been corrupted, from what I understand?). Shadow Lugia is just one of many Shadow Pokémon.
I love how you learned about the lore. In that note, I would highly recommend Lusamine’s theme & her “Mother Beast” theme. Both are terrifying but the first has a hint of love & nurturing lost in all the manipulation. I know that sounds nerdy, but I love to pick up the vibes of the instrumentals & their tonal shifts. Basically, Nihilego, that white jellyfish ultra beast that looks kinda like Lillie that Lusamine’s after, has the power to mind control its hosts like a parasitic wasp. It turned Lusamine into a hyperfixating parasitic host towards it, making her neglect her family. & in the end, after you destroy the ultra beast, she comes back to her senses & goes to Kanto with Lillie to find Bill. You know? The guy that fused with a pokemon in Red & Blue? To separate the poison from her body.
Gen 6 explored life and death, and gen 7 scratched the surface of the fact that there's a full on multiverse with Necrozma being a creature capable of tearing through the boundaries between dimensions and it has consumed basically an entire universe by consuming all light and energy (Ultra Megalopolis is the last surviving remnant of that world).
In scarlet and violet we still have the two themes that make no sense half the time “pecharunt theme” and the “Team star grunt theme” one is a rave and one makes no sense to be good since the battle lasts 5 seconds
Gen 5 music nomination: Shauntal Masters Ex probaly the best soundtrack of the whole game and Omega Ruby and alpha sapphire archie and maxie theme and Wardern battles (Adaman and Idira) you will the last two the most❤
If you want to listen to something different, I would suggest you look up Fire Island Volcano, from Super Mystery Dungeon (if you haven't already, it's kinda hard to keep track without a playlist tbh.). Also, Super Mystery Dungeon would be my favourite Pokémon game if it didn't drag so much in the beginning.
You need to listen to the Legends Arceus version of the Giratina theme. And a dedicated video to the Gale of Darkness OST would be nice, every single one is fire.
But he's only written a couple of tracks. He did one for SwSh and like...four for SV. Granted they are all fire, but Pokémon music tends to be in general.
Scarlet and Violet is hard to talk about cuz it pretty definitively proves that Gamefreak are not "lazy" or "uninspired" or any of the things people say about them, lazy uninspired people could not have made a lot of the designs in this game, nor the story that it tells. Modern Pokemon, mainly the last two gens, reminds me a lot of Toby Fox in the writing which is a big compliment, and it makes sense cuz him and Gamefreak are besties, Toby Fox even composed a song for SwSh and a whole overarching motif for Scarlet and Violet. Anyways the MAIN problem that I think most people are wising up to is just that the release schedule of this franchise does not give the developers time to finish the games properly. This problem really started rearing its head with the switch to 3D, Gamefreak had pretty much mastered the art of 2D Pokemon games by the time they were tasked with making a game for the 3DS which would OBVIOUSLY have to be in 3D right? Regardless of your thoughts on the switch to 3D they really need more time to make it work. The biggest critiques of SV are the performance, bugs and quality of life features, all of which can be patched up with more adequate time. Luckily, it looks like the next game might be getting that treatment? Pokemon Legends Z-A was announced in February, and under the normal schedule we would be getting it in like a month, but the current projected release date is actually early 2025, and there's reason to believe it might even be pushed back to fall 2025, so maybe they're cooking! I started writing this comment after getting to the Shadows of Almia track lol, I haven't played the game but Jaiden Animations made a great video all about it, long story short it's a very goofy game in a good way, it's apparently considered to be the best Pokemon Ranger game? I've only played Guardian Signs so I wouldn't know
Scarlet and Violet have decent character writing, but none of the other aspects of its writing, such as plot or worldbuilding, are exceptional in any way. Pokemon fans are just starved for good story content. I definitely don't think it's in the same league as Toby Fox's writing.
@@FieryMeltman I'm not talking about the quality, that's all subjective, I'm talking about the style. a lot of the humor (Sordward and Shielbert, Clavell/Clyde, etc) and the way some of their recent stories have sort of almost poked fun at the way Pokemon as a series as well as many RPGs work (Hop and Kieran both realizing they're not the main characters) strike me as Gamefreak being massively inspired by what Undertale did/what Deltarune is doing.
@@gatr2897 I could see that being the case, though it doesn't make Pokemon look any better. Sordward and Shielbert in particular have got to be some of the blandest villains in the series. I definitely wouldn't have remembered their names if you hadn't reminded me. It almost feels like an insult to compare them to Undertale or Deltarune. Like you said, it could be that they're trying to emulate Toby's style since they're working with him, but if that's their intention then they clearly have a long way to go before they understand the appeal of his work.
Yeah Gen 5 toned it down, but then it goes up again afterwards - Gen 6 is life and death, and then from Gen 7 onwards they go into eldritch territory with Necrozma, Eternatus and Terapagos
For other Masters ones, I would suggest Ash's theme. It's pretty cool because they took the OP from the anime series that served as the climax of Ash's journey and turned it into a trainer theme for him.
This man needs to listen to Monster hunter music Recomendation Zinogre, valstrax, fatalis, safi jiva, mizutsune, malzeno, teostra and Pokke vilage(favorite) Comments add for more
You asked how a master ball failed and Spoilers Terapagos enters its true form and the character who caught it tries returning it into the master ball, but the pokemon is so powerful that the masterball explodes while trying to pull it back it
I kinda disagree with the Gen4 take that they peaked there even as a Gen4 fan myself I think that they set the foundation of the Pokemon world with those games and after that they expand upon the world with varioous regions and new pokemon. While it's true that the Gen 4 Pokemon are untouchable as they are basically responsible for creation it's unfair to compare Gens to that Like Gen 3 was about the Primordial Beings that shaped the World (Gen3 trio + Regis) Gen 6 sets up with Order and Balance of Nature which Zygard is responsible for and arguably as strong as Rayquaza in lore Gen7 expand upon the Multiverse and Cosmology of Pokemon with different dimensions and whole new civilization other than Humans Gen8 then tones this all down with a Good vs Evil story
To be fair, gen 6 didn't go THAT far down, since it went into Life and Death itself. Then gen 7 went extra-dimensional with the UBs. But after that? Yeahhh. Tney definitely tone it down
when it comes to gen 7, sun and moon (original) has a much better plot but the gameplay is less great, but ultra sun and moon sorta trashes every character and ruins their stories but adds a good amount of gameplay improvements
I also do think ultra sun and moon did the biggest lore expansion since diamond and pearl with the whole ultra space alternate dimension stuff but it's limited to Alola so idk (ig the pokemon gods are limited to Sinnoh too so whatever)
I also did not think necrozma was that powerful? I thought it was more similar to the way Kyogre made the water rather than Arceus and the whole world but I'm too lazy to research that rn
35:00 well scarlet and violet have time travel and sun and moon has spacial wormholes so I wouldn't necessarily say they are going backwards again. This is exactly why you should play the newer games when you get to them cuz even if some of them aren't that good, I think they're all worth playing at least once. Diamond and pearl/ platinum I could play 971916x and not get tired but would never replay scarlet probably. Also ultra necrozma ost slaps
