Today we headed back to Shenandoah National Park to hike Old Rag. This hike is an almost 9 mile loop that says to plan for 6 or 7 hours to complete, the first 2.5 miles is a steady climb from the parking lot through rocky path switchbacks, at the 2.5 mile mark you make a turn and are faced with a slick boulder climb and for the next .4 miles you will climb 500 feet cross crevices, climb boulders and rock steps, fit through narrow slots and pry your way up along the rocks, flanked with spectacular views of the valley the climb is amazing but not to be underestimated. Your reward is a panoramic view of the Shenandoah valley, if mother nature lifts the clouds while your there. From the summit there is a 5.5 mile descent loosing 2700 feet back to the parking lot along rocky trails and a fire road that will tire your legs. Its a great day hike to test your legs and rock scramble ability. Warning- you do have to register ahead of time, its a nominal $1 per person but in busy time the slots can all fill up so sign up before you make the drive.
