My grandmother was born in Rangoon in 1936. She said Rangoon was the biggest and most developed city in South East Asia at that time. RIP to my beloved grandma.
One of my distant family of my village had a famous business company (G.Y knight during 30s,40s) in Rangoon, burma but with the footprints of time everything faded away. Om Shanti om for ur grandmother ❤
No, the british city of Singapore was the greatest city in SE Asia, Calcutta was the greatest asset of british in Asia. Hong-Kong and Singapore became important much later. The way Britain gave it all to save calcutta from the Japanese gives an impression.
My grandparents and my father was born in Burma and they moved to Macau during the 60s. I am going to show them these films. They would be very happy to see this. Thank you again Mr Rogge.
My birth place is Lashio NSS, myanmar, what a beautiful n worthseen place, now I'm settled in Dehradun UKhand. Miss you a lot Myanmar Love you ever... ...
I’m so glad to see this. It was such a wonderful place, more developed, nice place to stay. It is pity that the country is not like the same than before. 😞😞
Its looking exactly like Calcutta did on those days. The man pulling rickshaw,tram... None can differentiate . Thanks for providing us a chance to experience past.
@@dotmerah6713 India became so Britishers that we kicked out British, Infact every other kicked out British. Past is history and we are part of it. Kick& push is part of history. At present we have a very good relation with Burma, Bhutan & British and with so many other countries. India has always been a peace loving country and will continue to do that...
Wonderful to see these old movieclips. I visited Yangon 2 years ago and had a great dinner at The Strand Hotel. Myanmar is a beautiful country. Thank you for sharing Michael.
Minglabar Chris Lesse... Am impressed with Strand Hotel too. Full of History & Heritage... Wz at Strand Hotel for Afternoon Tea... Absolutely Awesome...
Thank you for this. Very interesting to see. My mother was born in Rangoon in 1926. Her father was an engineer from India who was working there for a few years. My mother had a gold charm bracelet with a rickshaw just like the ones you filmed, I had not realised the connection before seeing this. So nice to see. Thank you once again.
want to live in the past? You must visit Myanmar, Burma of yesteryears. The city Yangon (Rangoon) still has not lost its charm. Thanks to the people of such a lovely place for making me to feel at home during my four years of staying. Long live the country !!!!!.
I have read many stories about Rangoon, and heard many real time experience about living lifestyle in Rangoon from grand parents . It's very lovely to see as videos.
My mother born there at Mandalay, Burma in 1938 and has moved to India in early1944. My paternal grandfather continued his legal practice there till early 1960s and breathed his last at Patna, India in 1964. None of the family went back to claim his vast property despite a letter from Burma Government. Wish if I could visit Mandalay once in my lifetime. Probably I can trace my maternal roots with the help of Mandalay Barristers Bar (Legal Practitioner's Bar ) Association.
@@sai17120 Economy blooming was started in 2013 when U thein Sein administration. There are many fakes things happening in that time because of Obama and Soros working together. And India government want to support one side.
Tell me what kind of economy bloom last 5 years. You get information from fake news. Come and check what things are gloomed in my country within 5 years. Everthing were reached to Dinosaurs era.
I am Murugaappan, now in Cheñnai I am indebted to my foster country who groomed me to be a Chartered Accountant today Thanks to all Burmese Teachers and friends.
I remember my school days in Rangoon in 1941. Though 6 years later than this clip the city was the same, the trams and trolly buses and the rickshaws. The rickshaw pullers were mostly from Orissa in India. We lived in 51st beteeen Dalhouse St and Merchant st. I would walk to my school St Paul's in Fraser rd. Pearl Harbour attack brought all this to an abruopt end. When I visited in 2006 the city was very different.
My mother, my sister, and I along with our extended family of a total of 26, all women and children, left for Vizag, India, from Rangoon, Burma by the ship Jaladurga, packed to three times its registered capacity. For me, 9 years old then, and my friends it was fun time to beat all fun times. For my mothers and my three aunts not so much.
Now I am 73years old, during my childhood Rickshaw pulled by man is a common sight in small Towns like Rajahmundry. In 1963 I first saw Tram in Bombay(Mumbai). Those days some working people used to say that they went to Rangam(in Telugu) ie Rangoon. Thank you very much for the Vedio.
Very interesting video footage. Makes me think of how and what we record today and how it will be viewed in the future. I like video and sound without extra naration. Thank you for sharing
That was one hella wonderful video. The only word coming out from my mouth after watching this clip was ''WOW''. It felt like nostalgic, the olden hair style, the fashion, the cable buses, the cars. It's such a great chance to witness not only just a foto but the VIDEO CLIP that what's it like to be back then those retro days of my country. Thank u so much for sharing♥️
Yes, Shan women are always inviting foreigners into the country. Most of the Chinese are arriving in here with the name of Shan. The whole Shan women have responsibilities to take all foreigners into the country with her easily accesible vagina.
Baby Baby stop lying like British is nice for our country lol Myanmar has 2000 years history even before British Myanmar was prosperous not only materially but also culturally. See what we got after British so many unwanted immigrants. The best gift of British is civil war. The result of divide and conquer. What we get after civil war? The pretentious saver of the country Military government 😂😂😂 Even the bitter military government is the result of British understand? Sometimes I am dreaming of if myanmar was not colonised like Thailand??? I’m quite sure the colonial British will have to go to hell after they die especially the British queen since they destroied so many life.
During the colonisation of Burma, the British colonial masters brought in a large number of Indians into Burma. In the capital Rangoon, the native Burmese became the minority in their country, while the Indians became the majority. That's why in the video, you see many Indians but only a few Burmese. The cleverness of the British.
@J S - Since you've been to Yangon 20 years ago, that must be 1998. Since there was a coup d'etat by the then military dictator Gen. Nay Win in 1962, most of the Indians who were merchants and industralists, had their assets nationalised; thus most of them had to return to India as making a living became very hard for them. Some even returned penniless. Therefore, after the coupe, the Indian population decreased. For your record.
@@tfhssn - Wrong, it was not the Burmese civilians that were racists; it was the then army dictator that made the coup de tat that was racist. At that time, we, the civilians also suffered at the hands of this dictator. Burmese owned businesses were also nationalized without giving a cent as compensation. The dictator then was General Ne Win. Just to put the record straight.
My parents moved to Burma from Agra in 1936. My father was serving with the King´s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Rangoon was first bombed by the Japanese on 23rd December 1941, shortly after the bombings of Pearl Harbour and Singapore. The hill station, Maymyo, where the KOYLI were also stationed, was also bombed and my mother and elder brother were flown out to India by the Americans. My father had to walk back to India through the jungle with the KOYLI. He was one of the few who survived. Many of his fellow soldiers died from Malaria. The retreat was the longest in the history of the British army.
thanks Michael, Some historical buildings are still standing like Port authority office, Fire brigade tower, Strand hotel, Municipal office, Mosque near Sule pagoda. I see views near 26 and 27th street near Theingyi market.
Hi Michael Thanks for posting this documentary about old Rangoon. How can you get it? It's wonderful . Imagine anyone in this video still alive today? Or may be not.
what a remembrance! I love this film because i was borne in Rangoon 93 years ago, in 1931. However then it was not so peacefuil. There were riots betwenn Indians and Burmese and earthquaques as well. Nevertheless I shall remember Rangoon with love. Ralph
Most of the people in this video are not Burmese. They are Indian. Most of the footage is from India town. Downtown Yangon, near the Strand and South Dagon. Its like that to this day. The Indians were brought to Myanmar by the British as Clerical workers.
Amazing. A glimpse into what Myanmar (Burma) used to be like. Never been but I'd definitely putting it on my list now just to see how it is in real life and how the country fared post independence.
Our country is still beautiful even military rule for a long.People think ,this Indian under British Rule are Rohingya but totally wrong. This is downtown of Yangon and living more Indian migrants .They are 99% Tamil Indian,Telegu and under the colonial time migranted to our country. After Military Dictator Newin took the power, most of them came back to India because of nationalization policy. But tamil still inside our country till and today they are becoming citizen and live with us in peace.Whoever rule in our country beauty is not losing with our old cultre. We keep more traditional than other south east Asia countries.Yes,counytry is very rich until 1964-70 😂 but no more and military leaders and their family are controling politics and business with Chinese together
Abdul Hadi Malik Yes we are and we should. We are more similar to other SEA like Laos Thai and Cambodia etc . Burmese are karma camobidan decedents so yea we love to be SEA. We don’t have any appearance of any south Asian. We mixed well in appearance in SEA.
Жаль, что англичане любят грязный народ показывать, мой отец фотографировал Водный фестиваль, все девушки в ярких сари, красивые, веселые, архитектура ПАГОД потрясает воображение... 1971 ГОД так видел Бирму мой отец.
You may have noticed that most people you see in this footage resemble those in India, Bangladesh etc. In fact, Rangoon's population at the time consisted primarily of those persons from India and their descendants. The primary language in Rangoon was Hindi I believe. Many Burmese people who grew up Rangoon in the 1930s and 1940s could speak Hindi.
in this video, if you think it could be there were such people. but in 1941 to 1942 japan ruled harshly in myanmar .most of indians fled from burma to india during that times. later myanmar general Ne win sent them back to india in 1962 almost 2,00,000 population. during before/after 1971 war bengali muslims influxed from bangladesh. that is all.💐💐
Thanks for sharing this picture , i think those tree are still in the landscape. Looks like many Indian along with British, you can the dress, Longgyi, they worn it,
Before 1950’s Rangoon was a majority Indian town (Hindus and Indian Muslims). A few thousand Brits brought a few hundred thousand Indians as an administrative and law enforcement buffer against a few million natives.
they were brought from india by colony british as labours mostly but some technical men might be. before 1885 there were not bengali muslims upper myanmar .in1924-1926 bengali muslims arrived to lower myanmar from bengal during colony british rule.
hi guy you bengali and indian hindu were in this vide in 1935. but don't forget history. Japan ruled harshly burma in 1941 to 1942+43 early. most of such benglis and hindu indians fled from burma to india due to they feared Japanese ruler. again in 1938, they were returned by burma and General Ne Win ruled in myanmar he sent back almost 2,00,000 indians in 1962 too. however, some remain. in 1971 war Bengalis muslims entered into myanmar illegally and they influx yearly in myanmar.
