Its been 50 years since I've fished a cane. Thanks for reminding me. And maybe the younger generations just might learn something fun. 👍👍👍

@@awfoutdoors6299 I don’t know either brother. I just happen to cut couple in the mind set of building a cane pole someday and they have been there ever since. I am following you on this fir sure. God bless.

The cut off pieces are great for fish attractors with cinder blocks and quick crete. I used to cut river reed cane, let it dry and used it for cane poles, and bank poles for catfishing about 40 years ago. Tie 3, 6-8 foot tall ones together and use them for growing heirloom pole beans also.

That sounds like an interesting thing to do. I wouldn't mind making myself a cane pole and some jigs. Very interesting.

Looking forward to this series. Can also use the thicker portion (8ft to 10 ft long) as anchor pin in shallow water
@fuzzyfultz
@fuzzyfultz 3 года назад
Grumpyneanderthal I would like more info on the anchors please. Did you add any certain thing to the ends and what did you cost them with so on. His long does it take to dry season them correctly ?
@fuzzyfultz
@fuzzyfultz 3 года назад
Also, I am thinking of a few to use fur bank poles fir catfish as well.

The pin anchor I use was purchased and is made of fiberglass. It’s 8ft long and 1 inch in diameter. I was suggesting that an inexpensive one could be made from sturdy bamboo. Where I fish all bottoms are soft mud so penetrating is easy. Since bamboo has closed chambers you would want the both ends to be closed. You could add some type of hard cap like PVC end fitting attached with construction adhesive. I would lash some type of ring on the top end to easily attach a short rope. On cat fishing certainly need a stout pole but very doable. Reminds of the old slaughter poles they used decades ago (made with bamboo) with bass lures tied on a short length of twine. They would paddle along a tree line and jig those lures for bass and quickly haul them out.

@@Grumpyneanderthal thank you Sir. I had actually researched the pvc anchors somewhat. Also the catfish bank poles to. I know where I can get some bamboo and I believe I will give this a go. In our fishing lakes here in Eastern KY, there isn’t that much of a place to use short anchors. But in the river tributaries there is. I have been in situations a plenty where I could use a anchor for sure. I checked on the solid fiberglass poles and they are kinda expensive. I gotta give the bamboo anchor a try fir sure. Glad our friend here is doing this step by step bamboo build. I love this kinda ole time fishing revelations. Thank you and God bless.

Absolutely give it a go. I don’t think those made strictly from pvc hold up well, it’s not stiff enough. I think a thick walled bamboo would be better. While you are at make 2 or 3.

Wondering how coating them after light sanding with boiled linseed oil (3to 4 coats) would hold up. I use it on my garden tool handles and it gets better with age. I re-coat them twice a year. Much easier as less expensive than epoxy.
@awfoutdoors6299
@awfoutdoors6299 3 года назад
I’m familiar with linseed oil and use it on my tools. It would probably do good , at least when the cane gets completely dry.

@Grumpyneanderthal

Yes in the garden tool side it’s easy to make a simple weeder by bending some metal strapping like used on crates into a flat oval and attaching it to the sides of a shaft like bamboo. Very simple and effective for weeding around plants in the garden. I’m enjoying your series and agree that getting back to simple things that you craft yourself brings great satisfaction.
