Chinzo Machida interviewed his brother Lyoto Machida about an old school Karate training that happened many years ago.

To have a father like yours was definitely a blessing from God. Father, Sensei and Master all in one was the tuffest thing he must have done. Show him unconditional love because he did it with love.

@@riffguru No Problem. "OSS" or "OSU", is a Karate term of that its used to acknowledge when a Sensei or someone shares or directs something to you. Acknowledgement of understanding, and mutual respect. There are other Japanese Martial Arts that also utilize this term. Also as a way to greet other members in the dojo, with a bow. OSS! In my experience it is specifically used in Shotokan Karate and the JKA (Japan Karate Association), but as I mentioned other Karate styles, and Japanese Martial arts also use this term.

My Japanese mom didn’t use a shinai but used a broom to whack me if I didn’t get 100 on tests lol. That’s just how the old school Japanese discipline was

Most of the kids growing up in the 80s till early 90s probably had similar teachers and parents too. My elder brother had a sensei who continuously punched to your face while you had to block. Many students had bloody noses. The motto back then was “No Pain No Gain”. Good conversation though about methods of teaching and parenting as well.

We are a shotokan club in Alberta Canada. Jka/Iskf. Sensei always hit us with everything!. We are not allowed to do that anymore as time has gone by from when I was young. But I miss it!. I now teach the kids and beginners at our dojo and tell them stories from when I was young and sensei would hit us with sticks/punches anything she could think of!. OSS from Canada!. Thank you both for so many great fights and teachings to watch and learn from.

Tive a honra de ter a visita do sensei Yoshizo Machida há anos atrás no dojo onde costumava treinar cá em Portugal. Ótima técnica, bem rápido a demonstrar movimento de braços tanto nas defesas como nos tsukis, e incrivel condição fisica. Oss

Yeah, the martial artists in the past were more connected to reality. Υou should read “Myths and blind spots in the fighting arts’ world”. I have never read a book like this about realistic martial arts. The guy is throwing bombs exposing everything in regards to why martial arts are laughed at. All instructors from every martial art should read and learn from it. It’s may even be considered a collector’s item.

The old way, with the shanai, was the right way for so many. It might still be the better way, but we are too soft now to risk trying.

In a fight there is pressure so you have to get use too a bit of pressure with out crushing the spirit of the student.....i think? you learn faster with a bit of pain and when you go home you feel good!!!

there is much to be said for our respect for our elders. We can learn both what to do and sometimes what not to do. but no doubt you learned so much from your father. You guys are so talented and have so much to offer others today and your early training prepared you for that.

Grande Chinzô, lembro de você fazendo demonstração de defesa pessoal junto com o prof. Bruce no Norte e Nordeste de karatê no ginásio da Escola Superior de Educação Física. Creio que em 1986, eras um garoto ainda, mas já era uma promessa do que se tornou no futuro! Faltou só legenda, não domino português

I grew up learning Shotokan my sensai did the exact thing back when I was a kid ..well he used a broom stick to whack our stance into correction..it was harsh but today as I look back it was worth it..thanks for this video it just brought back old memories I should call my sensai and check up on him thanks this brought back my personal nostalgic feeling

i found the shinai thing really interesting... where a lot of karate seems to have turned into this "one punch and run away" thing, most karateka seem to just runaway in a fight, thus not maximising the use of their quality footwork... this seems like a fantastic exercise to give your brain a new, more aggressive, gear to use.
