Very nice sequence...the kid on the far left had a nice build and showed alot of spirit. What a great glimpse into a long ago time where these guys were feeling their own strength against another man and having a fun time. That's what sport should be about. Thx.
My Grandfather, told me about a champion boxer going against a wrestler (I think it was a catch wrestler)...and eventually the catch wrestler clinched at the right time, and got the boxer to the ground then submitted him. And to this day, people consider boxing as the #1 way to fight. No disrespect to boxing but it would be nice to know what to do when someone tackles, trips, or pushes you down to the ground.
This is the New York Athletic Club not YMCA. The man in white is Hugh Leonard who was William Muldoon's protege and the chief wrestling trainer at the NYAC
I'll rephrase this. Catch wrestling with out the holds (catches) is not catch! This film is from the New York Athletic Club. The NYAC has always been one of the leaders in the Olympic Movement. Therefore, since submissions have never been allowed in Olympic Wrestling it is not Catch as Catch can. Folkstyle is the same as folk music. It is just the style of your culture. Judo, Karate, Greco Roman, Cumberland are all folkstyle.
I remember reading about an interview online of Ron "Black Dragon" van Clief, where he mentions I think a man named Joe Lewis, telling him not to fight in the Ultimate fighter, because Grapplers (like Royce Gracie)...will take you down and submit you right away, he was a bit sceptical and wanted to try it out himself. Then yeah he lost...and he says that competing in the ultimate fighter 4 is the best way to test what you know.
Keep in mind he studied Goju-ryu under: Peter Urban, Frank Ruiz, and Moses Powell & studied WingTsun under the founder Leung Ting. And plus he's a 10th degree red blet in his style: Chinese Goju (unification od Japanese style goju-ryu with its roots in Chinese martial arts).
Chuck Lidell I heared has a black belt in bjj, and he has a good sprawl. Now compare the old shcool days when nobody in the early UFC days and in vale tudo 94' and 95' (the one's Rickson participated in) knew how to sprawl or any grappling defense...those were the days when the Gracie's brought a shock to the martial arts community.
And I didn't even know but kung fu has throws that are similar to judo(as shown in the show HUMAN WEAPON)...the only thing it's lacking on is ground grappling.
Yeah I agree with: "Karate and Kungfu has grappling techniques, just not as prevalent as Jiu Jitsu. UFC is great, but not so much for self-defense. " And yes age did play a factor, but what it showed is that the grappler has a chance against an expierenced striker. People then and even some today (baffles me) still think the art makes the person dominant. Thinking like old shcool Tyson or a good striker without a doubt can take out a grappler.
Not one submission, or even one submission attempt? No surprise I've watched many hours of vintage wrestling and have yet to see even one submission hold outside of show holds in worked matches. Many Wrestling holds do use pain compliance however to secure a pin though but I've never seen a true submission from a Western Wrestler prior to Modern MMA.
ifyouseekay1000 You still haven't posted a single link that supports you claims. You also have no proof of your own combat prowess(I do), having nothing valid to say you spew ignorant childish threats and insults. The list of MMA fighters who have Black Belts in Judo is quite long, the list of top MMA fighters who implement, practice, and utilize Judo in the ring is even longer.
@JudoMateo What's crazy is that youre watching a video of what real wrestling looked like from Jake Shannon, the one person whom you can least trust LOL. Submissions outside worked matches never existed and these guys swear by the name of their bullshido art that they're legit.
Its funny you should say that because the 3 quarter nelson, reverse half nelson & the plenty of thigh twists can easily be applied into a submission which is what the guy literally went for every time, only the defender escaped by a spin out which was countered by a waist hold but a dumb ass like you cant even see submissions or holds properly because you have a very lacking skill set when it comes to wrestling. Just face it you literally dont know wtf your talking about.
When I mentioned that, "my Grandfather told me of a boxer and a grappler...." I mean't that he saw a match long ago where this happened. I should have stressed that it was something of long ago.
This is not catch wrestling it is modern folkstyle or freestyle. Just watching how the guys are trying to hold their opponents for back exposure illustrates that.
