In 1974 I started training in karate and didn’t know that the great Billy Robinson was teaching catch wrestling in Wigan (I lived in Warrington) This was all pre UFC so none of us knew what did and didn’t work on the street. Missed out big time 🙁
Josh Barnett brought up Billy Robinson on the Joe Rogan podcast, and because of these videos I knew who he was talking about. It's awesome that you guys support and give us access to such a legend. Thanks guys.
Saw a video of Billy Robinson teaching an Achilles lock on Facebook. I just happened to stumble upon it a few days ago. As I read through the comment section, I'm shocked to learn he passed. What a phenomenal teacher. I've never studied wrestling but would've given anything to have trained with him. R.I.P and thank for sharing this gift with us.❤
If time travel were possible imagine going back to train under Farmer Burns and later Billy Riley. Two legendary masters of the art of submission catch wrestling aka hook wrestling.
Billy started lying about his age in the late 1960's and he always claimed to be 6-7 years younger than he was so as too not put off the show premoters.... He trained with Billy Riley in Wigan and was only 14 years younger than Tommy Moore (Jack Dempsey) when my dad trained and wrestled with them in the late 60's and early 70's which would make him 78 or 79 years old in the video... A remarkable thing considering he had trained and fought hard for over 60 years at this point. A true Martial Arts legend. RIP BILLY.
Billy Robinson and Peter Maivia once had a famous fight in a restaurant where Peter threw Billy through the glass window. Billy came back and put Peter in a hold which he couldn't escape so he started biting Billy's face and Billy had to flee. After that fight Billy Robinson famously said "I guess the toughest guy really isn't the best wrestler or shooter but the guy who's willing to endure anything and do anything to kill the other guy. and that's not me."
you're not alone: many arts lost their way through the years, making things less dangerous, more complicated and the like. it's the same thing that always happens, something that was once life becomes a sport and so they impose rules so the athletes can have longer careers.
I respect the technique and know it will work under the right circumstance. But, in a bjj no gi class wouldnt that face pressure into the chin be considered dickish then lean to your coach smashing the shit out of you for pissing him off?
Absolutely brilliant. Brilliant. I would even incorporate spinning to see if the opponent follows properly. If not you have a perfect opportunity to throw the opponent the opposite way of the spin and take the back or as coach said drop down and take the leg!
@@spongebobsquarepants3990 I would guess not everyone had access to gain the hand in such fine art...possibly noone knew or taught it. That's like folks wanting to learn BJJ but there isn't anyone around to teach so they will go with the next best thing at their disposal be it karate/ tkd/ boxing....etc
Now that's what I call respect. He may be an old man but the young guy you can tell has great respect. You can see it in his body language.Gotta love the yes sir he gives him.Good on ya
In 1979, a new pro wrestling publication hit newsstands and magazine racks across the nation. It was Pro Wrestling Illustrated. When the first issue went to press, Billy Robinson was ranked at #5 in the now defunct American Wrestling Association (AWA).
Catch Wrestling is so awesome. I'm currently a 1 Stripe Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and if I stay there for the rest of my life I'll be fine. As long as I continue to learn Catch Wrestling from my Coach Mr. Jim Clark. He's one of the best around. I've beaten a 3 Stripe Purple Belt in open No GI Tournaments with the Submissions he's taught me. With Mr. Robinson also putting up videos how can you lose. God Bless 🙏 😇💯 Catch Wrestling For Life😄
Imagine if you will, Billy Robinson and Stu Hart in their 60s, fighting over the last package of bran muffins at the bread store. Who gonna break that shit up without getting themselves stretched and broken.
When will coach Roberson conduct another catch wresting seminar in 2013? Does he plan on conducting a seminar in the Los Angels area any time soon? Thanks, This is good training!
