Shadow of the Colossus is a game I feel everyone should try at some point. You may not like it, and that's ok, but it's an experience you'll likely never get anywhere else. It has aged poorly in some ways and many games have popped up in it's formerly unique niche, but it's still one of a kind. Pretty much any other Team Ico game falls into that category of recommendation, but SOTC is possibly the most interesting and approachable (Ico being a bit plain and TLG being a frustrating technical clusterfuck at times).

I'm curious as to what aspects you see in this game that make it art. Is it more of an avant-garde thing or what?

It's because it does what only video games can do as interactive media. It has as little dialogue as possible, it doesn't even tell us Wander's name, we found that through stuff manuals and interviews. Or it might be in the credits, but still. You explore the world and see things, like in one of the smaller colossi's arena, the one that's called a lion (though I think it looks more like a boar) it's a clearly man made location. Certain details are revealed to you, or clearly showed to you for you to interpret, through seeing the world. Another part of that interactivity is how many of the colossi won't attack you until you attack them, you can just stand there and wait. When you fight the last Colossus, if you just wait on its hand long enough, its eyes will change from violent/angry orange to the docile blue. It just looks at you curiously. This Colossus is called Malace and it's possible to see that it's not completely evil.

Strangely enough on the back of the PS4 remaster box it says “explore forbidden lands on a quest to bring your love back to life” but in game they never say, and I can’t find any other version of the game that says she’s your love

Grave of the Fireflies is anything but a "fun" movie, and thus it's not for everyone. Nonetheless, it is a damn good movie, and this game (from what I've seen and heard, as I've never actually owned a PlayStation to play it on) is much the same.

I never played this as a kid (never had a PS2) but bought this remake because it just looked so magical... and it didn't disappoint. I agree, it does feel clunky and definitely isn't a game for everyone, but I loved it.

This is really good timing because just yesterday I -made- encouraged my little sister to give this game a try. She doesn't play a lot of games, doesn't have the patience for most of them, but she's really enjoying it. She's on boss 12 right now, and I'm honestly impressed that she hasn't needed that much help. I basically had to go full drill sergeant to get her past Celosia, but other than that she's been doing fine. I think my favorite moment was walking into Dirge's arena. As soon as she saw him, she paused the game and changed her Instagram name to Dirge, with the profile "I am Dirge." And when she died to him, she took a picture of the game over screen and set that to her profile. It was great

I'm getting the impression that the people who didn't enjoy Shadow of the Colossus are probably the same people that didn't enjoy the Bladerunner movies because they were "slow". Their opinions aren't wrong, but their not objective enough to prevent me from enjoying these works myself.

Never felt regret killing these things. Maybe it’s because the game gives so little context, I never thought I was doing something wrong fighting them. I mean, I’m so used to games teaching me to be the good-guy and fight villains that I immediately assumed that was what’s going on here. The game makes it so spectacular and fun to fight them, there never was a “what am I doing” sense of morality to it.

I disagree with that. From my own experience, going in blind is the best way to experience any story-driven game, and especially one like this that might only hold your attention for one playthrough due to how it's built. I'm bracing myself for that this might be a troll of some kind, and I'm being baited into a pointless argument, but I can't dismiss the possibility that there might be people who do spoil themselves for whatever reason before going into things, even if I personally don't see the point or appeal of doing so. However, the ambiguity is strong enough that I feel like giving my two cents, and here they are. Worst case scenario I've written a few sentences about something I'm passionate about, so whatever.

I actually really like Colossus 15, it's probably alongside 13 as my favourite. It feels like Colossus 1 but scaled for end-game grip. Though I am aware that I'm in the minority opinion. But then again I love all the colossi except for 4, 9, and 10. 10 is because it's terrifying and I'll admit to it. 4 and 9 because the fact that you have to use the environment means the AI can fuck off whenever it decides to get bored. Also, exclusive to this remake, Colossus 11 can fuck off. The physics engine for that fight is awful.

I never played the game but I saw the Game grumps and Jacksepticeye's playthroughs of the game. The first version and the updated version. I love the game solely based on the art style. Jesus Christ these monsters look so majestic and beautiful in the updated version. They looked fine in the first version but look more life like in the new version.

Love the ambiguity of this game. It's open to interpretationt too. Excellent soundtrack is used strikingly during boss encounters. I know some will say "sort of a pretentious artsy game" but I like the originality and subtlety.

Can we acknowledge how unncessily defensive people get concerning this game when someone else doesn’t like it? I mean yikes, say one remotely bad thing about the game and fans will immediately say your opinion is somehow invalid or even send death threats. It’s like the precursor to Sonic Mania. I mean if you love the game good for you, but no need to get angry and outright abusive when someone else doesn't share your opinion.

What if the humans split dormin's soul into those colossal creatures for the sake of keeping him seald and by killing them you are releasing him from his cage, the black blood is no blood at all, but dormin's shadow. Therfore the game is called: shadow of the colossus, the colossus being dormin.

Sometimes a movie or a game doesn't have to please certain norms to be good and the triad of games from team ICO is just that. Yeah, they had to compensate and focus on other aspects and convey to the player why they turned their back to the contemporary gameplay conveniences in order to create a more believable world, but that takes mastery. Still, it's a game that's not for everybody who wants a game that doesn't get on the way of its objectives. Much like Hellblade is getting its narrative to intersect its gameplay mechanics to tell a tale that's difficult, even nausiating to stomach. And that's okay. We NEED that sort of games. People may not play them as much, but there are people to keep this type of games afloat and going and certain elements just trascend to other types of games and enrich the experiences the industry could give to the audience. Which is always a good thing!

I think it's good that you're killing the colossi to return them back into the one being they once where. Knowing that you're freeing a deity that was captured for seemingly no reason and with no evil intent and that these creatures souls are just pieces to form a greater soul so they continue living makes the hunting down of these souls more heroic to me now more than depressing especially as you near the end of the game.

I played the PS2 version originally, but not when it was new. I found it in a bargain bin at Kmart after I got a PS3, and still found it super impressive. I've actually come across people who didn't realize the PS3 version was a remaster of a PS2 game, and I think that speaks highly to it's quality.

I tried to like SoC, I really did but for me personally I need more in the world than head to next boss, climb and stab is just too repetitive for me. It looks beautiful but just feels too shallow for me. But I can see why it is loved by people.

This game has been visually stunning on all platforms, this version in particular takes my breath away. But oh man, the sound design in the PS4 version is bad. The soundtrack is far too quiet, and so many sound effects have been altered or replaced.

I wanted to get a PS2 just to get this game. Never was able to afford one, sadly. With any luck I'll be able to afford a PS4 at some point to get a chance.
