my god people... it's not about whether you can buy one for cheaper than the parts cost... it's something he did with free time that he had and old shit he would've thrown away. i think it's great. making something old into something new and looking at it and thinking "that's fucking rad. Have you considered replacing the port with a passive radiator? I think with a speaker this small and everything you put inside the sound is going to benefit greatly from one.
