Man this brings back memories I had a school bus like the 80s version I rode on when I was little like 5-7 years old and then one like that between the ages of 8-15 good memories. Good ole 80s growl and good ole 90s powerstroke
Same! The first few years were spent with a mechanical DT 466 s series. I remember it well! It was wheelchair unit, so unlike most every other school bus out there, it's handrail placement was slightly different, there was no partition whatsoever to put a handrail, so it was mounted on the bus body immediately to the right of the entry door. The next glorious experience would be 5 years with a 1997/98 cab over with a DT466 electronic! Good old reliable navistar international, out of the only other piece of shit diesel we had, which unfortunately was not a T444E, but rather a GMT 530 with that damn cat 3116 in it! They should have got an international lol.
I love the sound of the DT466 i owned a 1985 S1800 had a 77 pass thomas body with the DT466 and a 5 speed manual transmission drove it on a route from 1996-1999
Gentlemen, Your not trying to start a car. With two or more batteries that are very low or dead and a Diesel engine to start you must first CHARGE the batteries for at least 10 minutes preferably. Trying to do it the way you did on the video is asking for trouble. Watched a guy who wouldn't listen and that battery was gassing because it was so low he didn't want to hear from me, called me a know it all and hooked up the jumpers to the running vehicle first. Then hooked them up to the dead gassing batteries. 8 hours later he came to and asked what happened? I just looked at him after the doc tested his eyes and told him your lucky to be alive, didn't anybody teach you you always make your last connection on a running vehicle? It was 35 below zero. If I hadn't been there one of the school bus drivers would have found him in the snow and cold. Accident happened at 3 am bus drivers show up at 7 am. After he recovered he installed jumper plugs on every bus and 100 watt block heaters on every bus. They start a lot easier now. The lower the battery the higher the amperage as much as 3 to 5 times as much amperage is needed to start a really cold diesel and the higher amperage can do severe electrical damage, better to wait 10 minutes and get some power in the battery before starting her.
I would have waited even longer than 10 but...some don't. The way to hook up cables is terrifically important yet some do it right and...some do not. Batteries are dangerous for sure. So is the human condition at times.
No patience whatsoever. Why wouldn't you wait 5 minutes for a few amps' worth of energy to flow over to the dead batteries? Less chance of melting the jumper cables, or a great big spark causing an explosion. Not to mention how hard it is on the boosting alternator, too.
