They call them storage heaters here in the UK

I would be doing it this way too, unfortunately these units are not cheap or surplus in the USA. Ok instead I have tested and kiln with basaltic rocks inside.

I remember one of these at my friend's house when I was a kid anytime! had it had been on was a bad time to sit on it to hot . a dozen second hand solar panels wiring buy you. completely off grid your establishment costs are fantastic The Game is Afoot . if you are in a clear day cold night area you will have the t-shirt TV room

Interesting idea but I don’t think that you’ll get very good results because of the low efficiency and limited winter solar production. We warm the house with air to air heat pumps during the day time which are also quite cheap to buy and the house retains the heat to some extent once it gets darker. The air to air heat pumps have a cop of 3, or sometimes double that if it’s mild outside (above 10c). I warmed out our 45m squared room from 16c to 22c for 6 hours today for just 3kwh! We still heat our water with resistance heating though.

Manufactured by the now defunct Derby Products in Hobart Tasmania for the record. Used to be a lot of these around in Tasmania, though the 2kW model was by far the most common. Yes they're heavy. I have some definite memories of relocating 2kW units full (with the bricks still inside) and it's somewhat strenuous work yes. Those weren't designed for easy dismantling, only the larger sizes were.

This 5.44kw has approx 200kgs of what seems like cast iron blocks, yes no easy job to move, this one will have 4 wheels rated at 150kg each attached when finished

Great idea you also need a heat source that is not resistance heating maybe a heat pump.

The output temperature of a heat pump will be no where near high enough. These work by heating the core upto 200°C or higher then slowly releasing it.

@@JaenEngineering heat pump run through a desuperheater will do it at least that is what my heat pump uses to make hot water.
@JaenEngineering
@JaenEngineering 9 дней назад
@@offgridwanabe that's fine for 60-70°C hot water and while you might manage to get up close to boiling it's still no where near what's needed for effective solid state heat storage
@offgridwanabe
@offgridwanabe 9 дней назад
@@JaenEngineering What is the highest temperature a heat pump can produce? High temperature domestic heat pumps can provide heating up to 80°C, the same as traditional gas boilers. Regular heat pumps tend to reach up to 55°C.

I know you are looking for 500f at least, low voltage nichrome wire will do it with 24 volts

Nice Ross! I'm using Bitcoin miners for heat in the winter but of course there's no heat storage but they do generate BTC so I guess that's a form of storage...😆

direct your fans at a large mass/concrete/stone/concrete floor etc.

Are you going to go through an mppt controller + inverter or are you going to power the elements directly from solar?
@sjdtmv
@sjdtmv 11 дней назад
I intend to run it from my set of 3 x off grid Inverters
