I have been a homemaker for the past year (due to job loss). I have wholeheartedly embraced this time to go back to a simpler life. Doing laundry by hand, cooking from scratch, keeping the house clean (using vinegar and baking soda are invaluable). I love being frugal! My depression and anxiety have almost disappeared! More people need to stop living the fast life and get back to basics.

I remember how simple life was when I was a kid. I was born in the 60's and grew up in the 60's and 70's. It was a simple time where there was always something to look forward to. We didn't have instant gratification in those days. We wrote letters to our family and friends. Long distance calls were only made on Christmas. We had rabbit ears and an antenna on our roof that got four channels on our black and white TV. We looked forward to the Disney movies on Sunday evenings. My mom sewed all of our clothes. We used paper grocery bags for book covers for our school books. We got a lot of our furniture, bedding, and towels from hotel sales; they would sell off the old stuff for pennies on the dollar. My mom was a very thrifty housewife and she knew how to stretch our pennies.

Same way I grew up and it was the best times! Kids as well as some adults are missing out by being too connected to electronics and not cooking from scratch when possible. I came from Depression Era parents and grandparents that lived in OK and moved to Ca so I have learned as an adult all the things I thought were quirky as a teen. Five million twist ties or paper bags in drawers and pieces of aluminum foil. lol Cooking from scratch only😊

And we felt like we were prosperous and doing great! We used to walk over to our friend’s house and ride bikes and play outdoors until supper time! Yes! Thanks for those memories!

I also grew up in the 70's and remember covering my school books with brown paper bags. My entertainment consisted of playing outside all day with friends and doing puzzles with my parents.

A few years ago my Dh wanted to build me a new chicken coop, but we didn’t have much of a budget. He tore down an eyesore shed and saved all the useable wood for the new coop. I found an old window at a thrift store. We used shingles I made roofers leave after they redid our roof (they were loaded in their truck ready to drive off with shingles we paid for!). All we had to buy was some fencing for the run, and siding to match the garage. We used paint leftover from doing the house. We were so far below budget we splurged on a cute metal chicken weather vane for the roof. My husband has a scrap wood stash that has come in so handy over the years, but using nothing but repurposed wood to build my adorable chicken coop was our best low cost project to date.

@@floridahorsegirl1019 I don’t know how to post a picture on here. It’s probably a 6x8 building with a roof that slants down on just one side. The run is totally enclosed and is about 8x10 I suppose. The nesting box is attached to the outside so I don’t have to go in, and has a ramp for them to walk up to get into it. Lots of roost area inside and out. The only thing I’d do different is add a larger overhang from the coop to the run so it stays drier in the wet weather.

I’ve bee collecting scrap lumber, fencing, nails, bolts, brackets, windows, doors and cement blocks from the local dump to build my chicken coop. I have enough but need to build it, I’m a 55yr old woman and don’t know how to build it and winter is here so I have to wait for spring but it won’t cost me a thing 😍 My neighbor told me the other day his daughter has $9k in her coop 😳 That’s nuts !!! All my life I have enjoyed hanging my laundry outside. I remember helping my mother as a young child. The lines were at the back of the yard. behind our home was a power plant (We were in the heart of Dallas TX.). There acres of land and a huge lake that fed the plant. In early spring the field was FULL of wild flowers and yes.. some were actually weeds! After hanging out laundry we would go under the barbwire fence and pick flowers and play(till Security would wave at us and we would leave). I love being outside and listening to the birds. With my VERY large family I have saved a lot of money on my electric bill. All of my 8 children attended Catholic school. I put thier uniforms in the dryer for just a few minutes then put them on hangers. I hand them on a rack or the shower curtain rod in the winter and rainy weather. I love the fresh smell on my linens. I've been stopped by strangers who asked "What kind of detergent do you use?". A simple thing I truly love...especially when the entire family gets involved!

I was gifted a second-hand wooden barstool that someone's puppy had chewed on just a little bit. I had my husband cut the stool down and I used the seat portion with about 3 inches of the legs left and use it as a riser for my plants. The dilemma was what could I do with the rest of it, after looking at it from all angles I realized that if I turned the bottom portion upside down it would hold my husband's work boots and work as a rack to dry his wet boots in cold weather. We put it to the test last winter and it worked wonderfully when place next to heat vents. This was by far my most successful repurposed item.

We also got a second hand tree. After 12 years of our use (and who knows how many before) it was looking sparse. I got ‘garland ties’ from Dollar tree. They look just like my tree. I twisted on a few packs of those and it filled in nicely. Spruced up my tree for about $7.

When my son was little, we used to go ‘junking’ a couple of towns over. He would be on the lookout from his car seat for things that looked cool. We found a teeny tiny wheelbarrow that he used to help me in the garden. When he got to big to use it, I took it apart, refinished it, drilled holes, and use it as a planter in my garden. I always think of our adventure when I see it. I also ‘junked’ an entire farmhouse of old large windows. I couldn’t believe they were just being thrown out. We brought them up to my dad and with my vision, and his skills, they were turned into beautiful trellises for my flowers. I plant black eyed Susan vines on them every year. 😊😊😊

The best thing I found in the trash was a box of cook books. Found like a if things on the alley way when a family was moving. Knocked on door and asked if they were put out. Yes, take what you want. High end baby crib, window air conditioner, and can't remember what else. My husband nicknamed me Sanford &Son. All things were given to friends that needed them. Hv to try the bread. Looks delish.

The blue glass bowl is gorgeous! And,you're right: Emmy made! I took the drawers out of a dresser, that was left in an apartment I rented, and stacked them up to make a bookcase...while I shopped for a bookcase. I never bought a bookcase because those drawers worked so well. Once, in a thrift shop, where wealthy people lived, I found a couture 2 piece dress, which was not only custom designed, but the fabric was also actually custom hand loomed. It was FANTASTIC!! I bought it for $10 I wore it and wore it till I couldn't fit into it any more. Usually, I'd have cut it up to make something else. For this dress, though, I re-donated it and got a tax deduction for it. While I was there to re-donate it, I found a few more things to buy...but never again something as wonderful as that 2 piece dress! 👗

Earlier this week I got winter squash on sale at Meijer, then the next day Aldi had it on sale at $.20 cheaper. But I'm not complaining because it was only like $.89 and $.69 each. Today I used the stove, my blender and the instant pot to make a butternut squash soup. I used chicken broth I had frozen last month and seasoning, spices and ingredients I already had. It was a really simple yet filling meal with a side of grilled cheese w/tomato sandwich.

I love that you opened this video with that gorgeous sunrise! For me that's the epitome of why I live frugally, so that I actually have the time to enjoy things like that. My best trash find was an entire patio furniture set, with cushions, that a relative of my neighbors gave to them. They decided they weren't really using it and so they put the the table and 6 chairs out to the curb. This was such a blessing to me. I live in Florida now and my children came down for Christmas last year and the weather was so beautiful that it would have been lovely to eat Christmas dinner outside but, I didn't have patio furniture. My son said that next year he wanted me to get patio furniture so we could enjoy Christmas dinner outdoors. I was planning on picking up a patio set on sale until my AC broke down and I had to spend $8000 on a new one. So if the neighbors hadn't thrown away their set I would never have been able to afford even a cheap set on sale. Love your channel 🌻🍁🌻🍁🌻

I love you mentioned the aprons....I use to never understand why use an apron. This past year I figured it out, with cooking, cleaning, gardening, an apron is essential to protect your clothing. Only problem is, I am a bigger chested woman as such i never liked an apron because it doesnt cover my chest areas properly. Well i taught myself to sew over the pandemic and i suddenly realized i could take my apron, make a Templet, and add adding the extra width I need and just see up my own aprons with pockets and all to my liking.

I don't have an apron but a snap-up-the-front scrub top works great for protecting your clothes. I i bought a couple from a thrift store that i use almost all the time because i bought a "large," plenty big enough to cover my clothes and not restrict movement, very loose and comfortable. (And has large pockets, just as the old aprons did.) Really saves your clothes when you cook. My grandkids can use my old med or smalls for painting/playdough smocks.

As I may have mentioned before, my friend in Jersey lives in a City where there are many curb finds. I'd say about 90% of her apartment is from the curb. Each year she finds a new Christmas Tree, she is always finding lamps (while I can't find any in a store), furniture, wall decor, you name it.

I got a Melissa and Doug toy for free because it was missing some magnets. . Pictures of the pieces in the actual size were printed on the back of the toy. I took a photo of the pieces-with my phone and printed it out in color for free at the library. I glued them to refrigerator magnets given away by a local business and cut them out. You cannot tell which pieces I made and which came with the toy originally. My granddaughters love that toy.

Love your beautiful fall colored top! My most recent 'fix it up' story is with a purse. I wanted a new purse for this coming winter, and found a very cute, stylish, black and white Rossetti purse at the thrift store for $1! As I got to the check out, I saw that one of the fabric sides had a coffee stain on it. For a dollar, I decided to try to get it out. Sure enough, my wet Norwex cloth took the stain out in 30 seconds! The inside lining needs a little stitching in one place, but that will be easy to do by hand. Hello cute 'new' winter purse! Also, our son needed some more storage in his room, and I'd been thinking a 6 section cube shelf would work well. While walking this summer, I FOUND one out for the garbage! I heard the trash truck on a nearby street, so I hurried home to get the car. Even though the shelf unit needed cleaned and tightened, it was just what we wanted. Husband and son cleaned and tightened it, and it looks like new! Another example for our young adult son that God provides!!

Lovely loaf of bread. I don't know the flavor you describe since I've never been to the Cheesecake place -- I'm too much of a tight-wad. (Never had a Starbucks coffee, either!) I do make an Oatmeal bread but it makes 2 loaves and takes a while to knead out. I'll give your recipe a try soon. Normally I make sourdough bread and have actually perfected the sourdough loaf, so that's my weekly bread. I also like to make an Italian Herb loaf and the occasional quick bread known as Beer Bread (great toast bread). Those 2 use yeast but the sourdough bread already contains live yeast so this is why it's my regular bread. (Yes, I am that cheap lol)

The senior apartment building that I live in has something that I call the Community Table in our community room. People put items on it ranging from food to clothing, books to cookware, all free for the taking. A couple of my favorite treasures are a little painted wooden house with a crow perched on top, a set of felt owl ornaments, and a mug from a local restaurant where I've spent many a happy lunchtime with friends.

Yes!! It is truly the simple things that can provide so much joy. I find that I really enjoy simplicity the older I get. I don’t know that I repurpose as much as pick up things I need…like one day I was walking and someone who was moving out a bunch of things on the sidewalk for people to take. I saw a Nordicware small cookie sheet and I needed one and was going to plan to buy one, but I found this for free and it was in great condition. I use it when baking all the time.

My husband and I grew up in New Jersey where we had 'junk night'. About rwice a year people could put just about anything out on the curb and in the morning the city would haul it to the dump. We furnished our first apartment with some of that 'junk' (because there were no laws against taking it. Someone had put out a rataan couch and chair! Family contributed too, pots and pans, serving dishes and lamps. I still miss some of those hand-me-downs.

Ohhhhh....that bowl reminds me of my Dad's Mother! She collected lots of different types of glass bowls, platters, and what-nots. Hobnail, Fenton, etc. I remember she had pieces in green, blue, and white...maybe other colors too. Items we've reused/repurposed.... My brother gave us a full size waterbed for our son when he was a teenager. When he wanted a regular bed, we used the frame of the waterbed (solid wood) to make a book case. Imagine the bed frame lying on the floor...now turn it up so it's standing on one long side....we added shelves and painted it and it's now in our family room holding probably 100 books (we're readers). We didn't stop there! We used the headboard, which had a flat top and three shelves across the length of it...painted it to match the book case and used it in the family room beside an entry door. The shelves/cubbies hold shoes, gloves, etc., and tall winter boots reside on top. My son made a rustic shelving unit for me out of free pallets. I used an exact-o knife to cut Norman Rockwell re-prints from free calendars. I fitted them over existing Home Interiors and Gifts pictures that we'd used for years. We used the existing matting and frame. If we ever wanted to, we could remove the N.R. prints and use the originals pictures again. When I first learned that I could roast coffee beans at home, I got a free air popcorn popper from a friend and roasted beans for a while--to see if I wanted to invest in a real coffee bean roaster. Although I do use a roaster now, I kept the air popper in case I'd need it in the future. Our family had accumulated a ton of t-shirts from vacations, sporting events, etc. and they were special to me--I didn''t want to get rid of them. So, my daughter and I repurposed them into resuable t-shirt shopping bags. We love up-cycling and thinking outside the box!

It wasn't until I got into my car that I looked at my receipt and saw that the two sale items rang up at regular price. Went back into the store and up to the courtesy counter where I was refunded the entire original cost (not just sale price) of each of those two items meaning I got them for free! Did not realize that Publix will refund you the original cost of any sale item(s) if they do not ring up on sale! I am so grateful I went back into the store!

I have done that too and I have used them in the past to heat my home by attaching them to the back of my dryer vent. It captures all the lint. I just frequently turned them inside out, cleaned out the lint and reused them over and over like a filter for the vent. It also adds a little moisture to the house when it is so dry in the winter.

Moving out of my current apartment. Have been here several years. When I could afford it at the end of the month, I checked my Insulation Wish List or To Do List. Live in an end unit with this building kind of like Legos overlapping each other. Am connected to three other neighbors plus my own stairwell. Have arthritis so it seems in the winter it gets ice cold and never warms. And the HVAC and vents not built correctly. Add in truly cheapskate tenants, two that work it as much as they can to live off me even though they have more incomes coming in. And a shared attic. My goal has been to do research online quite extensively for the highest quality products for the best price. And just about every item with my move next month is going to port out with me. My four years here I was able to get ten to fifteen percent off the five grueling cold winters of baseline extreme highs. Even with discounts including a shared apt flexible solar panel with more discounts in the summer than winter, I know also if the grid goes down, I need a comfort level for me and my cat...seems in this place I am constantly digging deep into my pockets and still not really catching up with insulation to bring down the monthly costs...next month I move into a more temperate climate, and the floorplan simple and smaller. My portable insulation I am in not desperate need for as the energy bills should be much lower. But also, any temperature insulation equals sounds from the neighbors and outside world insulation. For temp insulation, I will start off more overinsulated with the exception of a few items. So for me, thinking outside of the box with budget and portability were my most toughest of goals. Insulation my homes well is my first money investment should I ever decide to play the stock market investment games.

Dear Emmy, I am baking every weekend bread or bread rolls. I love to do this. Your recipe looks great! I will try it! My first frugal blessing "for free" is to use the old garden of my parents in law, who died 6 years ago. In this big garden we grow lots of potatoes, peas, beans, cale and so much more for our great family. It is always a family event when we are there and share all the harvest. Yesterday, for example, we harvested 30 kg of potatoes, tons of apples and plums and planted 5 big rows of little strawberry plants (for free from my own garden), garlic and winter salads. Our second frugal blessing was a little sports equipment, which we have got for free from a neighbour. Now we can do some exercises in our pantry in the basement of our house. By the way, you are looking so beautyful with your hair❤.

My new favorite old is a small clipped article from 1940s I recently found between my grandmother's cookbooks. Pantry cakes. It didn't give any recipes, but it reminded women that you can make crumble cakes (thick pie crust bottom, some filling or thick jam and crumble on top) and store them airtight in cooler pantries and you can serve them up piece at a time for a month. As they are largely sugar, flour and lard/butter - they age well and harden up enough to cut them neatly. They were suggestions of making 2 cakes with different filling and cutting them up in portions so you can give your family a piece of cake every other day with their soup to cheer them up. I think it is actually a very nice idea, because most recipes suitable for it, like poppyseed cake, tend to be quite sweet and wholesame so you cut them in rather small pieces per serving. Goes well with the patch cooking too.

Great video Emmy and Paul....so good. Love the idea of a simpler time. Something I found a long side someone's trash: It was a 3 panel screen, you know the kind you open to use as a room divider and in the old days, some ladies would dress behind ..I found one of those. The fabric on it was very thin and tore in a few spots. What I use it for: when I want to have my front door open for fresh air or cool air, I will set it up in front of the open door and it keeps my dogs from seeing out and barking at everything. If the screen wasn't there, the dogs would bark at people walking by or a cat crossing our yard or the mailman.... It's a perfect solution. And one of these days, I will re-cover it and make it pretty again.

I have been using bacon grease for several years now. It's great for cooking eggs in or browning diced potatoes for home fries! Recently, I decided to render chicken fat, like my grandmotherused to do. I cut off the skin and excess fat from chicken thighs and boiled them in a nonstick deep pot. I brought it to a low boil then simmered about an hour until the skin was dark brown and crispy and the fat was clear. I put it in a glass bowl until the fat cooled and then removed the crispy skin. I store the cooled fat in old, clean sour cream containers (it turns white cooled). The rendered chicken fat I use in cooking rice (instead of butter) and it's delicious. I also melt a couple of tablespoons and drizzle over root veggies, add spices and roast in the oven. I keep extra raw chicken fat and skin in baggies in my freezer to render as needed. I use a lot less store butter now.

Rendering pork fat (lard) and beef fat (tallow) is super easy as well and shelf stable. One of my grocery stores still has a butcher counter and I can order the “fat” trimmings really inexpensive. I just give them about a week and tell them how much I want. They make a few bucks for something they were just gonna throw out and I get pure fat for pennies. Much more economical than buying lard or tallow and I get tons of it! Ghee (clarified butter) is also easy to make and shelf stable.

(We save money without a land line.) But I've decided that on the weekends I'm going to stop doing that. We always wait a period of time before we purchase anything. Partly to make sure we really need it but also to give us time to find the best deal if we really do need it. That's the first thing I did this morning - clean up the clutter! I had important paperwork to deal with and clutter would have not been conducive to concentrating as I needed to do. In the evening when we're watching TV I ignore my phone and shut my computer off. I think it's helpful for getting to sleep, too. The bread would be delicious toasted! That bowl is beautiful! Good eye, Emmy! The only thing I can think of that I repurposed lately are containers that my SIL got from Bob Evans recently when they came out from Colorado for a visit. She and my brother bought dinner to go there for all of us one evening. I use the containers for leftovers and to freeze things for later. They work great! Another informative vlog. Thanks, guys! 😊

Barbara, you need to keep your phone on for entirely different reasons. It is a necessity for you. I am talking about people who mindlessly scroll for no reason. You need the phone with you!
