I brought a Car from the Side of the road, very tidy i paid 370 for it 2 years ago and other than the gearbox i was told about its been absolutely fan bleeding tastic, i have even done it up, in the acceptance sense, brightened the paint work up, fitted a bluetooth stereo and it flew through its 1st Mot in my ownership with out a single advisiory, not bad for an 18 year old car that i picked up at the side of the road.Although when the time comes as its a Nissan micra and they can practically go to the moon and back without a single problem i would buy another without hesitatingBut top gear is right quite simply " BUYER BEWARE"

Getting a salvage car dumped on you sucks. Fortunately this is one of the thing the US protects that the UK didn't. If you buy a salvage car that wasn't disclosed to you in the US you can force the seller to buy it back. If they fail to disclose anything major to you or lie about the facts of the vehicle they have to back it up legally.

I have driven crv, rav and forester , id have the Subaru its better by a country mile.

I bought my car, a 1999 Megane Coupe 1.6 16v for £300, bar a bit of scruffy paintwork ive cleared up myself and a £20 repair, I have what the insurance company reckons is a £1100 car. It has a whole load of new parts fitted and MOT till the new year. I'm a mechanic so know what the danger signs are. Somebody should make a guide for everybody to understand.

Box's on wheels

Look how much these cars where when new even top spec were around 20 grand and now days base models start from like 20 grand but qulity is gone, those were worth their money as they still last even today. Not saying that honda or toyota lost their reliblity even the rav 4 from 2003 onwards were relible and better looking and qulity, but in general times changed with technology and expensive usless features I cars.

Surprise she picks the Honda. Honestly kind of a simpleton car I've thought. Like Honda's but never understood the crv always looked like a squished beetle in the rear. And Honda can't make a AWD system this we know. Subaru makes imo the most practical and efficient awd system. Never seen one stuck in the snow I'll tell you that much. Thought the competition was about best 4wd wagons. Not which is the best soccer mom car.
