Same for me (90s). I distinctly remember one girl (my bully) making a big show handing one to everyone in class, except me, even though I got her one. So I guess this would be one way I could've gotten one lmao!
My kid's school has everyone give valentines to everyone else in class, but you're only supposed to fill in the "from" line, and the teachers do the "to". I suppose it's to prevent vinegar valentines.
When folks say social media ruined us and made us mean, I think of things like this. Folks were always mean, social media simply made it to give mean folks a voice. See your average youtube comments section for an example. Thankfully not everybody is mean, and it's important to remember that 😊
Gosh, I actually think the RU-vid comments have gotten NICER over the years (though maybe it’s my algorithm) compared to when I first got on here years ago. The rest of social media (and more, as you say) can be a different tale though. 😂
I think there was also a BIG problem in the early years of the internet with anonymity allowing people to be really horrible to each other with little consequence. You could say stuff online that you wouldn't be caught dead saying to someone IRL. And that trend spilled over into social media, despite it being much less anonymous, but just because it was still the internet and people were more used to it. But yes, you're absolutely right in that this behavior is not at all unique to social media or the internet in general. I just think it got highlighted and amplified because of the way things spread online.
@@keybyss98 I've been here pre-goog days (2006) and imo yes and no. If you stay in your little niche areas (here, smol hobby stuff, etc) it's pretty nice but anything too mainstream is a garbage fire. I miss the downvote actually working...there's actual hate vs "jokes" from the old days, hard to describe succinctly
@@MatthewTheWandererAnd honestly, a few of the critiques aren’t the worst quality either… with how bad medicine could be back then, maybe some of the doctors could use an insult or two regarding their cozy relationship with the undertaker, lol
It's always so weird learning about the victorians and how they loved to talk about the importance of innocence and virtue yet they were also extremely cruel, hostile, and repressed!
We had to give everyone a Valentine's day card to everyone in the class but also had to send a message, I remember sending one to a boy who kept pulling my hair, "The teacher made me send you a Valentine card, but I still don't like you." It still makes my Mom laugh when Valentine's Day comes around.
Yes I'm 62 years old and we used to do this a bit when I was a kid! In daily life and with valentine's! There was a trend in the early seventies of funny insults and 'comebacks'. Our mascot for that was mostly the guy who said Dyno-mite! on the TV show ( I can't remember the name right now) Although it had to be done carefully so someone didn't suddenly get offended, it was recognition, respect and valuing each other to exchange hilarioua comebacks with friends - although it really was socially dangerous at times! 😂
I mean, I can't understand why people would send these either. Especially if you're attacking some aspect of a person that they can't control (like their appearance) that kind of shit is just plain mean and can be hurtful to people that we care about who have similar features that we're making fun of.
"Don't say anything behind someone's back you wouldn't say to their face" Well if I truly despised someone I certainly would say it there first, and maybe a card if they didn't get it the first time. But in honesty they would make a good joke to a friend. But sadly going after outward traits is as old as shallow people who do such.@@cinnerman
@@cinnerman It can always be remade and take the good to make something better. But we certainly see the modern equivalent a lot anyway, I know you have seen trolls. I understand your distaste, but not everyone is so good natured to find absolutely no use of such.
If you don't like someone and have to see them every day, establish boundaries and keep things strictly obligatory. If you don't like someone and you don't have to see them every day, focus on the things that truly matter and ignore them. Life's too short to spend constantly hijacked by your lower nature.
I love this so much because it shows how brutally honest you are towards someone instead of giving them a fake smile in their face like a two faced liar + you will know who to avoid.
I particularly like the ones that have the subtext of “Leave me the f-k alone! I’m not into you!” as opposed to the ones that are just plain insults. Granted, some of the insulting ones can be pretty funny at times.
There were also people and families who did not like, practice or allow each other to do this. And different people did it for different reasons, good and bad. I absolutely adore your channel! Thank you for all you do in your attention to real history, research and sharing!! Priceless
Imagine having a hatred so strong towards someone that you would spend time crafting an elaborate mockery of them to literally send it to their address like no one's business 😂
Dude I would love that. One of the best birthdays I ever had while I was stuck at work, my coworkers got together and made me a card that was really nice on the outside and when you open it in big ass letters it just said "FUCK YOU" in and little bitty letters was "happy birthday" I laughed for two solid minutes
I used to know a guy years ago who just didn't get Valentines very well. He was a butcher to trade & thought he'd use produce for gifting. He sent one girl a prettily boxed sheep's heart. Another year he sent cow eyes to another with the message I have my eyes on you. Honestly these days I imagine the police would get involved - needless to say he didn't get the girl on those occasions. ❤️👀
Never heard of these but i already LOVE them! They do need to make a comeback, because I'd love to send a few to some old and current bosses (once i quit😂). Plus, something i heard on the old TV show 'Are you being served' now makes sense. The line from Capt Peacock: "Mrs Featherstone? That vinegary little thing?" Meaning rude little woman😂
Nope we gotta bring these BACK, good sir! This is way too funny, I would lowkey really like getting these just to pin them up in a silly little corner of my room and humble myself
I'm always amazed by the viciousness and yet humility of people in old books I read. Someone will tell someone straight to their face that they're disgusting and lazy. And that person will be hurt but also ponder the criticism before making changes to fix it. Very interesting
It really gives me appreciation for who we are now and how much we've developed. I know that we're not perfect and in some ways we're still very cruel, but we are better than what we once were in some ways
This needs to make a comeback! I hope everyone that hears this would start a movement to bring it back. And say it all started back up here on this RU-vid.
As i had people in my friend groups who couldn't take no for an answer (that being the reason i went no contact with them) i see these kind of cards as a good solution
Well, my 8 year old has a couple of classmates she would have liked to send vinegar valentines to! If you think the Victorian were vicious, you've never met an 8 year old who's mad at a classmate for cutting in line! 🤣
I love your 8 year olds way of thinking wit and sass will go far. Imagine the scathing comebacks we'd have if we all lived in those days or kids back then had the liberties of today it would bring an end to useless conflict, quickly
I would send some of those in jest to people who know I love them, but they're too mean for me to send in earnest. Some of the victorian Christmas cards were also pretty hostile.
Oh goodness me, Max. You'll be triggering a revival, you know that, right? Actually, i think I love. 'Normal' valentine cards are so sugary and cutesy ... I want one of those. There's so much attention to detail in in them!
I actually like this. That would be a point in life where you can get honest feedback from strangers. You finally know if anybody cares about that one time you thought you really messed up!
The tradition is sorta kept alive today at certain zoos. You pay them a small fee and give them the name of the person you despise then they afix the name to a 🐀 or 🪳; Which is then fed to a 🦎 or 🐍. Sometimes they'll even Livestream the whole process.
