With a camera mounted on the front of one of the powerful ex South African NGG16 Garratt locomotives No. 87 our train eases out of Porthmadog station onto the Britannia Road Bridge and level crossing. Number 87 negotiates its way through the town before crossing the Cambrian Coast railway via Britain’s only mixed gauge flat crossing. For a short distance we run next to the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway (WHHR) to Pen y Mount junction, passing under the new Porthmadog bypass into open countryside. Shortly after Pont Croesor station is an interesting bridge carrying both road and rail over the Afon Glaslyn (River Glaslyn). With the distant hills looming on the horizon we steam through pleasant farmland punctuated by the odd river bridge to Nantmor halt after which the character of the line changes as we enter the Aberglaslyn Pass via No.4 tunnel. Bursting from the tunnel onto a ledge high above the pretty river below, with glorious mountain scenery all around we are now traversing one of the most photographed locations in the country. We leave the Aberglaslyn Pass via Goat tunnel to enter Beddgelert station where a Porthmadog bound train is waiting for us to clear the single line. The noise from our engine increases as it lifts its train through the wooded slopes to the summit marker board a mile or so short of Rhyd Ddu station.
Track gauge - 1 ft 11 1⁄2 in (597 mm)
One question that has come up many times in the comments for both the Welsh Highland and Ffestiniog Railways is "Why doesn't the train leave the tracks when it passes through a switch set for the opposite track" - it is not east to explain, but I'll try -
The switches at either end on the passing loop are set to allow trains to pass without the need for railway personnel to set them, in this case the train will always take the right hand track in the direction of travel, when the train reaches the end of the loop the switch appears to be set incorrectly. The switch blades are held in place by a spring mechanism that allows them to be pushed over by the weight of a train passing through them. Once the train is clear they are automatically set to allow a train in the opposite direction to take the right hand track, thus making the passing loop automatic. The system works well so long as a train never reverses before clearing the switch as that will de-rail the train. The first time this system is seen in operation it looks wrong, but it is common practice on many lines where speed is low and costs need to be kept to a minimum.

Hi, I would love visit Brazil one day, it comes across as such a colorful place, although I have to admit its Brazilian football I love to watch. The Welsh Highland railway has a fascinating history, closed for most of its life, but the route was saved because the official receiver did not find a buyer. When I visited the area as a child, it was a footpath, with very little to suggest it had ever been a railway, hard to believe when I see it today. Estou satisfeito por ter gostado do passeio. Tim.

@@Timsvideochannel1 It was the work of hundreds of volunteers who gave up their holidays and weekends to restore this traditional narrow gauge railway to it's former glory.. It took many years especially as a whole new spiral loop had to be built to overcome differences in elevation.

Great to see the final link in place. We camped at the Beddgelert site in the sixties and walked on the original roadbed, then later went back in our caravan (there's posh!) several times, seeing the progress through tracklaying then a ride from Rhyd Ddu to Dinas junction and finally from the camp halt to Carnarfon and to the now closed halt on the way to Porthmadoc which was as far as the line went then. Thank you for bringing back happy memories.

The old celtic gods, you see them everywhere left and right. They are still alive, it seems. The Welsh seem to respect very much their land, made by their old gods. They just use it, but do not destroy it, in the so-called modern sense. No big agriculture or anything of that kind. So the land looks like like it looks. Just Beautiful.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 5 лет назад
The Welsh are proud of their Celtic origins, it can be seen in the buildings and features in many myths and legends. Apart from a few road improvements Snowdonia hasn't suffered from modern over development. Wales wouldn't be Wales without the picturesque dry-stone walls that typify the scenery. Re-opening this railway was an inspired move because it allows tens of thousands of people to appreciate the wonderful scenery without damaging it.

Hi Zane, I enjoyed your shot of the Egmont Explorer. My wife describes New Zealand as being like Wales on stilts. Whilst the mountains in NZ are much higher both countries are similar in many ways, especially the vegetation and scenery. The history behind the welsh narrow gauge system is varied and interesting although transporting slate is the principle reason most lines were built. Many of the locomotives are really innovative, especially the Double Fairlies, being developed especially for the slate traffic on the Ffestiniog Railway.

I used to drive through the Aberglaslyn Pass almost daily during the summers of 1969-71. It was so sad to see the dilapidated track-bed going through the empty tunnels just south of Beddgelert. - I haven't been back since. I didn't know that a restoration had taken place on that line, until earlier this year, when I saw your videos, on the Welsh Highland Railway and also your video on the Ffestiniog Railway. Your videos are a lasting tribute to all those who restore and maintain these valuable pieces of heritage and history. A great thank you to you for your hard work in recording their efforts. A trip on both lines are definitely on my "bucket list". Thank you for such inspirational videos. Please keep up the good work!

The hill side scars are the spoil tips from the long closed slate quarries. Those working the Welsh Highland Railway were repatriated for their ability to haul heavy trains over the steeply graded route. Really enjoyed the trip. Going to watch Part 2 now. Noticed a conversation below about the horns on trains. Outside my window about 1,000 feet maybe more is 13 railroad tracks. Mostly freight trains. The freight train station on this side of river in Kansas City Kansas is about 1 mile from here. Everything going west goes thru here. Of course Amtrak goes out by here at night heading west and returns morning headed east to K. C Missouri. I here theses annoying bells all day and night, besides horns, and bumping cars when they hook them together. Also the loud squealing of there brakes. Plus they interfere with all our Tv's on the north side we live on. I've lived here 7 yrs. and still have times trying to hear things and getting use to them. But after watching theses videos and other train videos I am beginning to appreciate them better. I didn't say " I like them" just understand lots more now. Thanks for the video very enjoyable. Safe travels ahead. God bless

I have lived within earshot of a railroad all my life, I don't really hear the trains except when there is a different sound such as an unusual locomotive, although one morning I was woken by a train that rolled out of a siding and derailed on the catch points. The trains where I live in the South of England are mostly electric and they are not allowed to used the horn after about eight o'clock in the evening. I would love to see the railroads you describe, they sound really interesting. The railway featured in this video had been closed with the tracks removed in WW2 to aid the war effort. As a child I used to catch tiny fish in the river below where the railway runs through the pass, My Grandfather used to tell me about the little trains, I never dreamed that one day trains would once again run through the Aberglaslyn Pass. Watching the rebirth of this railway has been a very special experience.

On our honeymoon back in '77 we walked along the track bed with the river on our right and entered the long tunnel with a few other walkers. When a jet flew past making a long rubble we all walked quickly out! My interest in model railways was rekindled. I now run a model railway tourist attraction in Canada (Click loco symbol for more details). Fantastic to think we can now ride the train along that route.

My wife and I were at Beddgelert last year and took the riverside walk from the village down to Aberglaslyn Pass. A lovely walk, but gets a bit nadgery near the pass. The train passed us as we were adjacent to the track - it was great to see it chuffing past in all its glory. As an old railwayman myself, I doff my cap to your care of a beautiful line and rolling stock.

Hi, the walk along the river is very pleasant, although now it has been moved off of the track-bed, it is a bit more of a challenge near the tunnels. I'm glad you saw a train in the Pass, the railway keeps its locomotives and rolling stock in very good order, a real credit to everyone involved.

We followed the path all the way to the road bridge, beyond the short tunnels. The narrowness and at one point - needing to use the hand-holds - made my wife witter a bit, but she's made of stern stuff and we got there in the end. Off to the Azores soon, for a bit of volcano walking...

I am astonished at the workers of 100 or so years the way they carved out routes to lay down Train Tracks through all kinds of obstacles whether it be Solid Rock, Deep Water, roads, Rails ow whatever. HOW did they bore through solid Rock to create Tunnels Or open up a passage to let the railway line through. The building up and digging out of all sorts of surface to create a level track was all done without the help Of JCBs Bulldozers or ANY machinery... That generation is grossly under appreciated as well as the people who mapped out the routes to zig zag from start of the Line to the end of it all WITHOUT the aid of Satellites OR Microsoft mappings.. Geniusis one and all. ant THANKS to them and their forward planning.

Hi, I love your comment, I agree with everything you say. This line was built to carry slate from the quarries to the coast for onward shipping, unfortunately it was too late on the scene as slate was in decline, but too early to be a tourist railway because only the middle class could afford holidays, it was built over a protracted period of time, finally opening throughout in 1923, it fell into receivership in 1927, with most of the track lifted by 1941. That should have been the end of the story, but for a group of volunteers who formed a society to rescue part of the line in 1961, for a short history, please click on this link - www.whr.co.uk/heritage/brief/

I worked with both gangs on occasion but I was a regular local volunteer, also one paid winter on the track and another on S&T with a lot of volunteering there also, a new signalling system at Pont Croesor and Beddgelert stations commissioned this year uses some mechanisms I designed and built. I was mainly paid staff in the Operating department but did as much engineering work as I could as that's ultimately where my heart is. Hi Peter, I too am an engineer, designing and making plastic injection mould tools. I visited the WHR and Ffestiniog Railways many times over the years, watching and photographing each line progressing to its eventual goal. During that time I saw both gangs at work, wishing I had more time to spare so that I could join them. Living on the South Coast, I was too far away to work the odd weekend. I have made videos using some of the material I shot over the years (Video cameras have improved a lot since my first one in 1985). This one is a mashup taken over many trips showing progress between Porthmadog and Beddgelert - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_qwmYHPQ6tk.html. My family spent a lot time in a caravan on the Forest campsite , great for watching the works trains progressing the rail-head. I have a huge amount of respect for those who willingly gave their time to rebuild both lines, without them, including yourself, it would never have happened. Wish I could be there this weekend. I'll keep an eye out for your next video.

I realize that I’m 3 years late in commenting, but I just got here! I can’t think of a better way to spend time during my self imposed quarantine than to catch up on fantastic train videos such as this one though. I’ve read through most of the comments, and I truly appreciated all of the observations to keep an eye out for. But I didn’t see any comments where anyone was concerned about that person apparently materializing out of thin air at the 13:15 mark! I’m positive that it was a glitch of some kind though, as you can just barely see them approaching from a distance. Lol, but if that was either a ghost or a time traveler, it was obvious they were there to meet the exiting passenger. Hopefully I can be forgiven for immediately judging it to be a paranormal event, as I’ve been watching a bunch of those videos too. ☺️

The character of the Welsh Highland Railway is very different to the Ffestiniog! The power reserve of those big SAR Garratts is very palpable. I reckon they are operating at about 40% of their capacity. They just 'walk away with the train' after every speed restriction and from the ride quality could probably run at 55mph safely. Wonderful machines.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 3 года назад
Hi, the route through the gorge was constructed for standard gauge trains, although the line has always been narrow gauge. The bigger loading gauge allows the use of the ex SAR Garratts, although they are masters of the task most of the time, they do struggle up the incline and tight curves through Beddgelert Forest on a damp day. There normal top speed is 20mph although the speed was to be increased to 25mph once the track had settled, I don't know if the increased speed was ever implemented.

Hi, the switch blades at 13:40 are set for the other track. The switch is held in position using a spring mechanism, as our train passes over the blades, they are pushed over by its weight, the system works well so long as the train does not reverse once it has started passing over the switch. This system is designed to allow trains to pass without the need for anyone to operate the switches. It does look a bit alarming the first time you see it.
