(old video, newer available) Blues Piano - A Composition to Master | 12 Bar Blues & Tips

I came up with a blues composition which provides you with a few riffs to apply but it is meant to be just a framework for you to add your own style and tastes to rather than just forcing ideas down your throat. Please excuse the camera wobble; it was too close to my chair and didn't know it was happening. I have a newer version of this video available.
---
A quick look at the blues scale and 12 bar blues (with demos) and then it's into the composition which goes around the 12 bar blues twice. I offer to options: shuffle or walking bass (with demos). Take your pick or try another one.
Newer version: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WiMr7FJHxmc.html
As with all new musically related things, LISTEN and identify what You enjoy most. Here are the three links mentioned in the video:
1. Ray Charles: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UIGoqv8zlRE.html (If 'at least' this intro doesn't 'at least' make your eyes water then, quite honestly, you may wish to reconsider studying the Blues because this should pierce your very being);
2. Dr. John: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-33IujcZcurs.html (A good example of straight eighths rather than swinging eighths);
3. Oscar Peterson: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yUkKFRcsyiY.html (Quite possibly the most sensation example of swinging eights blues ever performed on a piano since the big bang - do listen until the end and, oh, wear at least two pairs of socks because you're losing the first pair).
12 Bar Blues Structure: I / / / | I / / / | I / / / | / / / | IV / / / | / / / / | I / / / | / / / / | V / / / | IV / / / | I / / / | V / / / ||: (repeat). Modified version replaces the second 'I' with a 'IV' for one bar, as discussed and demonstrated.

Well Dan, you've done it again. Thank you so much for this video. Being a trans-instrumentalist (that is, someone who started off life as a guitarist but identifies as a pianist), this video uses my guitar roots and gives me something I can hold on to in these as yet unfamiliar waters.(It is difficult, coming from a geytar to a key-tar.) There is a lot of stuff to digest in here but if I split my practice with you betweens scales and arpeggios (all keys - just like you said) and working on stuff I aspire to, like blues and eventually jazz then it makes my life at the keyboard more interesting.

Hello Dan, hope you are doing well so far this summer. First I want you to know that I firmly believe your "internal piano" principle. It seemingly works for me progressively. ThanksI have a question to ask you about Jazz composition in general. What I should do to compose a Jazz piece that is less daunting and not so muddy (too many notes for base clef, I guess)? Should I use more single notes (left hand) or playing arpeggiated chord notes individually instead (right hand)? good day! Thanks (8/14/2016)
@danthecomposer
@danthecomposer 8 лет назад
Hello Andrew my friend. Thank you for your comment and wishes. All well in my new locale! Lovely balcony view over the city. Very peaceful indeed. Much needed. Just for a little more 'proof' of the internal piano concept, see this recent article: piano-jazz.blogspot.hu/2016/08/internal-piano-visualisation.html There is a muddy point on the piano. If you play two or more notes together any lower than the A just below Middle C, it will sound muddy. The problem with the other end, however, is that chords are less distinguishable when all played with high pitches, so aim for activity from the A below Middle C up about 3 octaves and concentrate on that area. The style depends what you want to compose. Jabbing chords in the left? Block chords with both hands? Stride? What you describe sounds like block chords in the middle would be nice with the melody as always the top-most note! I am most curious of the result when it is ready! :) Best, Dan
@SMTX2023
@SMTX2023 8 лет назад
Hello there, this is Andrew from Houston, Much appreciated for replying my comment (question) promptly. You are absolutely correct about me jabbing chords in one measure especially at bass clef which results in a "muddy" sound or "block" composition like old church hymns. You know I have viewed (studied) 47 of your videos so far and I understand your thoughts and intention etc. However, for whatever reason(s) I still write a composition "mathematically" instead of expressing my feeling etc. because I am afraid of making mistakes. I thought if I have an equation to follow like playing C-major 7 first then followed by 2nd inversion of C-major 7 , then do the same for F7 and first inversion of F7, then G7 so on and so forth, very mathematically, the composition may sound OK. But, often it sounds boring and terrible. I will re-write it with some emotion and freedom. Thanks, Dan
@danthecomposer
@danthecomposer 8 лет назад
My pleasure. At least you recognise that it sounds boring and terrible. I always liken such an approach to paint-by-number artists; completely blocky and cluncky and dry and rigid... not so nice on the ears or heart when it comes to music! Looking forward to hearing the results! Best, Dan

Great video thanks! How do you play this in all 12 keys as other keys make those slides from a black key to a white key quite impossible!? I've heard that there are a few keys that are most common for blues? Love your content, keep it coming!!
@danthecomposer
@danthecomposer 4 года назад
Thank you! Some keys favour different techniques, that's just the life of a pianist, I suppose. Blues for guitarists is common in E, A and D... pianists like C, F, Bb (but G is fine too). If you can't slide up, you can crush a note instead (D against Eb, for example). Usually you can slide on at least one or two notes in all the keys but the note value of that 'slid to' note may be different. E.g. in E major, you can't easily slide to the bluesy b5 (Bb), but you can slide to the dominant 7th (D from C#). In C, you can't slide to the minor or the dominant 7th (!) but you can slide from the b5. It's just one of those things! (good jazz song). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oGE9EkJ2hbw.html Best, Dan

Thanks Dan for an exciting lesson, indeed. This summer so far I have not spent much time on practicing piano but I will get back to routine soon. I memorize the 7-Blue Scales as Root - minor 3 (interval) - P4 (perfect 4th) - Tritone - P5 - minor 7 - Octave. Is this the same as what you said on the video ? (I think so, but just be sure). good day, Sir! Thanks
@danthecomposer
@danthecomposer 8 лет назад
Hello sir, hope you're well. Take your time, of course! You are memorising on your internal piano, might I hope? Be careful with the use of 'minor' and the 7th; it will only confuse you in certain chords and even in conversation. You would do well to weld together the word 'minor' with the THIRD only. When using a 'minor 7' as you call it, use 'Dominant 7th' - this way, there can be no confusion! minor, dominant 7th, major seventh :) Apart from that, yes, the notes are correct. Best to you, Dan

Oh my, this is just terrific (and the audio and video are in synch!). Thank you, THANK YOU. Now, just what is that Oscar is doing? I can follow the sheet music, but it would be nice to know if the runs are examples of modal theory or something else. Might you comment? Wonderful, WONDERFUL.
@danthecomposer
@danthecomposer 8 лет назад
Hello Alan, how very kind of you - thanks! What is Oscar doing? I think everybody who listens to that is asking the same question!! I would say more blues scales than modal; such levels don't require thinking of which scales are available, it's simply note values based on the root (something I plan to make a video of). A LOT of what he does sounds so good since it's perfectly in time and uninterupted; I've never heard anyone sustain long phrases as long as he does without fault.. most faulter or stop after a few seconds. Quite astonishing. At least the score is available to at least TRY and see what he does at particular points of interest. Best, Dan.

Hi Dan! Thank you for sharing, any suggestion on practicing rhythm also the 12 bars is it 4beats on the I, 2beats on the IV, 2beats on the 1, 2beats on the IV, 1beat on the V, and 1beat on the I. Also what other chords would you use instead of the basic I IV and V? Thanks!
@danthecomposer
@danthecomposer 7 лет назад
Hi Samuel, thanks for your comment, glad the video is useful to you. Three questions I see there: 1. Rhythm in music is like rhythm of life; it is inherent and can therefore be mastered away from the piano. Spend a lot of time listening to some jazz recordings (Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Red Garland, etc), close your eyes and tap your foot and tap your hand on your leg; you will start activating this inherent rhythmic ability we all have (but many believe they don't have). When at the piano, as with any difficulties, dissect to the smallest component. Mastering the small enables easier mastery of the big. For rhythm, this could be playing one note against a metronome set at 120BPM in 4/4 time (with the bell on beat 1 - if you don't have one, there are loads on Google for free, or applications for your phone - no excuse!). When comfortable with one particular speed or beat, increase the number of notes per bar. Over time, you will find that when you play a piece, this inherent rhythm you have been working on away from the piano will 'come to life' without much conscious effort when actually playing. Do consider it - it truly works :) 2. The standard structure for the 12 bar blues is (I use '1' because 'I' is not clear) : 1 / / / | 1 / / / | 1 / / / | 1 / / / | 4 / / / | 4 / / / | 1 / / / | 1 / / / | 5 / / / | 4 / / / | 1 / / / | 5 / / / ||: repeat. You can enhance this by playing (as demonsrtated also): 1 / / / | 4 / / / | 1 / / / | 1 / / / | 4 / / / | 4 / / / | 1 / / / | 6 / / / | 2 / / / | 5 / / / | 1 / 6 / | 2 / 5 / ||: 3. Chord I, IV and V are dominant 7ths in the simplest version. You can enhance these dominant 7th chords by adding the 9th and/or 13. The voicing for a 9th is: 3, d7, 9 (E, Bb, D in the key of C, for example) and the voicing for a 13th is: d7, 3, 6 (which is also the 13... Eb, A, D in the key of F, for example). The 6th is also nice: G, B, D, E in the key of G, for example. Let me know how you get on. Best, Dan.

@danthecomposer
@danthecomposer 7 лет назад
Hello and welcome. I do not! It is important to train yourself to acquire jazz/blues (and anything, really) without the score. It is not as difficult as you may think and various videos of mine assist with that. Jazz/blues/pop follow very regular chord patterns and also are performed in certain keys more than others. In a nut shell, blues follows the 1 4 5 chord progression, jazz the 6 2 5 1 progression and pop the 1 5 6 4 progression. The most common keys for blues are C, F, G and Bb (E on the guitar due to the open bass string), for jazz are C, F, G, Bb and Eb and pop C, E and A (minor, often). You would do well to master your 12 major scales before you do anything else. See here for that and more: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vCSpfoeY034.html Then read this: piano-jazz.blogspot.hu/2017/01/essentials-mastery.html And keep me updated! Best, Dan

Question - Why did you drop the C in playing the C9? For example you played a the 6:48 minute mark the EGB(flat)D, but no C, why?
@danthecomposer
@danthecomposer 5 лет назад
Good question! Welcome to my channel. It is called a voicing. A voicing is very often without the root because it's either implied or the bass plays it (literally a bass player or your left hand plays it lower). A voicing even doesn't need the 5th so I could have played E, Bb, D. This is the voicing for 9th chord: 3, 7 (dominant), 9. A 13th chord is dominant 7, 3, 6 (the 6th being the 13th). Bb, E, A in the key of C. For more, see here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wZ3_i7E76mE.html Best, Dan

Hi there, thanks for your comment and welcome to my channel :) Yes, your left hand is not settled because your mind is concentrating too much on it. This is called 'conscious interference'. First, this article/video will enlighten you a little more to the philosophy: piano-jazz.blogspot.hu/2015/08/conscious-interference.html / ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_2TBasob_84.html In addition, see the ideas in this video and learn to 'lay them down' as if on 'autopilot': ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mIQQdBp1-Mc.html Your conscious mind must become an observer to what your hands do and the trick/goal is to reach complete 'spectatorship'. Let me know how you get on. Best, Dan

this is key to know - the spectator route, so do you kind of sing/hum the melody in your head and yor fingers will know how to make those sounds/notes and do the work on the keys? also my little finger is basically dead - any tips for hitting those chord extensions? I was thinking of just developing my own style which doesn't use little finger, but is that an error and as I progress I will need the 5th finger

Yes, I suppose I hear it in my head, but "I" do not come up with it; it's just there. I have a video on random number technique in improvising - it's a very good video to show you how random even YOU can be, too.. if you'd just let it happen. Once you have the playing field (a particular scale/pool of notes), just let it happen! See here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5vkOqjByveY.html Oh no, don't ignore your little finger!!!!!!!!!!!!! See this video/article: piano-jazz.blogspot.hu/2016/04/hands-muscles-and-tendons.html And do the exercise, with eyes closed, where you go up two or three (maybe 4?) octaves of the chromatic scale, from 'left' to 'right', using only your little finger (whichever hand) but using a metronome. Start about 100 (good for patience!), do about 5 cycles, then increase speed by 20bpm... repeat...increase by 20bpm...repeat. Until about 180. Make sure you're sitting high enough and far enough that the energy flow is not blocked from shoulder to finger tip. Do this daily for a few weeks before/after playing, or just alone. You will notice an obvious difference and increase in 'life'! Best, Dan

You needs lots of hands alone practice. If hands can't do it alone, they sure can't together.

Hello Dan, is there a fix rhythmic pattern from 7:35 to 7:55, the right hand chords against the left hand walking bass? Or we can play randomly? Thx

Hi Ming, Good question. Simple answer: no. I play them as if surfing a wave of rhythm. Whenever I feel I want to bash the chord, I do! At least perhaps try to highlight (or feel/play around with) a focus on beat 2 and 4 since these are the highlighted beats in jazz/swing blues. If you play the chord on beat 1 and 3, not even 2 and 4 or any off-beat (like I do), it will sound sooooooo bland :) Try it out! Best, Dan.

danthecomposer thx for the quick reply! I feel I can surf a little bit better after watching and playing along few times. Rhythm is a bit challenging for me cos of my classical background. You are welcome to check out my channel. I am learning jazz at the moment and I also sing, I'd like to do play along. But everytime I play and sing together, it sounds like pop because of the rhythm. Do you have any suggestion for this? Is it possible to achieve?

I subscribed to your channel and I hope some others will too :) You are clearly from a classical background with a graceful touch. Rhythm is something not acquired but discovered away from the piano. I call it the internal metronome. Listen to an absolute TON of jazz (Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Red Garland, etc.) and tap your foot on beats 2 and 4. Listen to the drum fills to become aware of what it means to 'feel the swing' before you go and discover it. Then, when you're walking around, feel it in your steps. It is difficult to describe in words but make each step a beat and feel within when you would play a chord. Sing along in your mind to the rhythm of your step and imagine playing a chord to it. Understand that the fingers can do what the mind can imagine them doing and can't do what the mind can't imagine them doing. It starts in the mind and away from the piano. So, listen a ton to some swing jazz piano (endless hours on youtube, try Diana Krall too: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OVouHHp4cuc.html ) then spend time discovering your internal metronome which will suddenly have a freedom to enter your mind and will appear when you need it. I will perhaps make an article/video on this topic since it's interesting. Best, Dan

Hello there, thank you for your comment. I am not playing an E chord, I am playing C9 (C, E, G, Bb, D) but without the C because the left hand is playing that with the chords. Best, Dan
