'Spot On' presenter Ole Maiava boards the MV Waireka on the Whanganui River and heads upstream to Pipiriki. Ole joins the deckcrew and learns the art of polling through the rapids.
'Spot On' was a Television New Zealand magazine-style educational TV series for young people which aired between 1974 and 1988. This story is from 1987.
The 290 Km (180 M) Whanganui River is New Zealands longest navigable river and has special importance to the region's native Māori people. In 2017 it became the World's first river to be given its own legal identity, with the rights similar to that of a person.
Launched in 1907, MV Waireka is 70ft in length with a 7ft beam and a draught of only a foot.
The Whanganui National Park was established in 1986 covering an area of 742 km² bordering the Whanganui River. It incorporates areas of Crown land, former state forest and a number of former reserves.
