"Olga Kern has... a very individual brand of music making... Kern... revels in scrupulously digging the notes out of Rachmaninoff virtuoso scores... She has a big, attractive tone and big technique and projects big emotions." Chuck Klaus
Over 20 years later and she is probably still the most dynamic and memorable of the Cliburn winners in the 21st century...love her playing and her personality
How can you not love this lovely lady, she really touches your heart, i saw on youtube her and her son playing together for Cliburn, he was so touched by the performance, perhaps it warmed his heart because his mother was his first teacher.
Olga Kern is the most Brilliant genius of the Piano since Chopin! Olga is the First Lady of the Piano! Her personality is unmatched by anyone on this planet! Her legend is carved in stone for infamy! By far, the prettiest and most talented! Her smile is enough to die for!
Whoah Pete... tap the brakes here. Unmatched on the planet, carved in stone, infamy... I love her too, but there are a lot of amazing people on the planet. I can think of 7 or maybe 8 that are totally great (one owes me $20 so I'm including her). And yes they all tend to have a good smile. Interesting.
I was there for that wonderful performance and was thrilled all over again to see this video. The Van Cliburn competition is one of the treasures of the Piano World and we who live in the NorthTexas area are blessed to be able to witness these marvelous artists!
Martha Jane, why the need to try to savage those pianists? They're not without talent and genuine accomplishment. You can express disapproval without going to such extremes, don't you think?. It's unnecessary. Why be ruthless? If you don't like their way of dressing, fine. I find they underdress, but I'm not prepared to verbally abuse them, certainly not to try to isolate them as 'low'. It's not right. They are not pernicious people. They certainly are not the characature that you try to fit them into. Tell me what you like about Olga Kern. I would be genuinely interested in your views on her. She is so much a force of life---yet so grounded---and I love her humility, she is hard to not be moved by.
Swede, No one is trying to savage these whores, they are doing it to themselves. Yuga had a spot on tv where this ugly stink bomb told the lady that was trying to make her feel at home at the hall she was playing, she informed Yuga if she needed anything don't hesitate to let her know, this ugly, classless, ignorant, skunk reply " i hate it when people kiss my ass" the woman and the gentlemen were shocked, the lady (i'm sure) was offended but being a lady replied " I'll leave you now have a great concert" why they chose to leave that in puzzled me, but i had heard she was a common bitch, but i saw it for myself. This dime a dozen whore from China where you can pick piano players like grapes can carry her gutter self back to China and take that clown LL with her, how dare she, lower than whale shit treat a lady like that, the piano playing infection, so don't tell me shit about this community ghetto, whore, the only thing she can do for me is get the hell out of the US.
You're being very over the top, Martha. You're complaining essentially that these pianists are excessive, undisciplined, attention seeking. What are you doing yourself if not the traits that you are excoriating? Once again, do you have anything to contribute about Olga Kern? Isn't that what these posts are supposed to be about?? Why are you trying to take things on a completely unrelated and purposeless tangent? Doesn't Olga's brilliance and character merit commentary? Observe the other commentaries on this 'page'. Olga is the subject here as she so rightly deserves.
Swede, I always gave Olga her due, she is a proficient classical pianist, she exhibits none of the unladylike behavior of Yuga or Khatia, she is a breath of fresh air, strictly focused on the music and playing her heart out with class and competence. None of the unauthentic gestures or whorish costumes, she is strictly there to give the audience her best and looks lovely. I have nothing against dressing beautifully but with taste, you can dress sexy without offending and taking away from the performance because the audience is wondering who condone that outfit (and believe me they do) having said that she is also funny, charming and a lady to the core. What i stated about the other two is warranted, Ms Kern has character, brilliance and authentic talent and it shows, the other two aforementioned should get an instructor on etiquette, we are speaking of classical concerts not the playboy mansion.
her technique and flare for showing us the notes and music as it moves through her is fantastic!........quite frankly others who can play such involved pieces without this emphasis leaves one wanting more from performance......bravo Olga Kern....I agree with Leo Mcdonald
You are my favorite pianist. Much love and respect to you and to everything you have achieved through such discipline and persistence. I cried while you described your dream about Rachmaninoff and Barcarolle. I cried as you waited to go on stage sitting on a chair in that infamous red dress. You are a dream and you have inspired me. Thank you, deeply. Thanks for sharing this video to the uploader.
Her host mother also seems such a lovely person!! I heard an interview with Olga some time ago, and she said they are still very close. No wonder, after this experience. So beautiful 😍
Get the DVD if t all possible - this is a very good condensed version of the journey of Olga Kern at the Van Cliburn. Brings tears to my eyes and to think - this was 11 years ago and there is NO CD!!!!!!!
5.49 😂😂❤️❤️ So great how happy she is with her performance. She nailed it, and she knew it. Nothing wrong with celebrating and sharing your joy with other people!
+jaxbus3000 I love her authentic humility. imho she is so above Yuga and Khatia, they must be sleeping with anything that moves, but Olga is all about the music and it shows.
Wonderful! Wonderful! I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes and joy in my heart. I would love to hear more music from Olga Kern. Also I very much enjoyed seeing Van Cliburn in this video. When I was very young, my Dad took me to see him play in a concert in Columbus, Ohio. Once you hear and see the very best perform you never forget every single note played.
She regularly plays at the Società dei Concerti in Milan (Italy). She is still a wonderful pianist and a beautiful woman. It is a great pleasure to listen to her Rachmaninov concerts live!
This is some twenty years since the 2001 Van Cliburn and Olga has raised her sonn to be a magnificent pianist, and if I am correct the first prize award is $100,000.!!! for the upcoming Van Cliburn!
Such a beautiful video, great insight into this (then very young lady). Worthy in every way of her success, and she's only proved to be a tremendously giving human being as well.
Robert can you share some of what has gone on in her life since this event? I truly love the power of this pianist... would love (and would expect) a care for others.
bigh gnoz she now has American citizenship and lives in the US, and her son Vladislav studied piano at Juillard and is already an accomplished and wonderful pianist as well! And she is still in close contact with her host mother from the competition (who is shown in the video) and describes her as her 2nd mom.
@@mathildewesendonck7225 thank you for sharing that! You can tell she developed such a beautiful relationship with her host mom. I imagine they're both really easy people to get along with.
"2023 marks Sergei Rachmaninoff’s 150th Anniversary! To celebrate the occasion, Olga Kern and the Austin Symphony perform a thrilling all-Rachmaninoff program including all four piano concerti and Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini in Fall 2023."
Yeah, when she fucking DESTROYS the Rach 3rd like "Yay, America...Watch me FUCKING DESTROY one of the hardest piano pieces ever devised." And we're like FUCKYAH! We love her.
btw I meant "Play the Rach 3rd" with amazing ability. Not like ruin it. I've seen her play that...Out of all the things I've seen? Ever? EVER?! That close? Olga won my heart. I never really knew someone that tiny "might" break her hands on a Fazioli.
The Official Andy Saenz , I think that at that point he was dismayed that his performances didn’t even get him an otherwise vacant third prize. I think that before announcing any first-prize winner, the announcer should have stated that there would be two first-prize winners. I’ve heard of corrupt competitions, and maybe Mr. Ioudenitch had also and thought he just got screwed for some unknown reason. Anyway, he was graceful afterwards.
i keep coming back to this video for the Schubert 6:23 .. the phrasing is just so perfect. and the minor section is divine 7:02 anyone know if this is available anywhere in its entirity?
I didn’t get that impression. I thought that, after it was announced that there will be no third prize and after he didn’t win second prize, and then Ms. Kern was announced as the first-prize winner, he assumed that the judges didn’t think he was worthy of even the third prize. I saw him in concert: he’s truly great.
AvntXardE remember that video is from 2001... at that time it was probably even more than a years salary. State employees in Russia 🇷🇺 (even academics) earned less than 200 $ a month in the late 90s
