Olin College Faux-mencement 2020

True to the Olin College spirit of innovation, creativity and teamwork, graduating seniors donned garbage bags, paper "origami" caps and tassels made of yarn, holding "faux-mencement" 2020 in the Oval today. Faculty, staff and students blew bubbles, cheered, clapped and cried, as the "faux-grads" received their "faux-diplomas."

This makes me want to go to the Olin College of Engineering. And I'm 52. Olin seems to be what every teenager in the world wishes their college/university will be. You're all amazing. This was a beautiful thing to see.

Relax people. This happened over two weeks ago when the message was to avoid large public gatherings and before schools started closing and asking students to leave campus. Social distancing was not defined or used then. Conditions have changed rapidly over the past 2 weeks and warnings have changed to fit these new conditions. If this exercised was planned for the week of March 23rd, I could understand why some would think this program was irresponsible. But don't trash the school or the students just because you are are seeing this now, in a new context.

Regardless the fact they had to master the hardest task maybe of the whole time at Olin..they find themselves in good spirits. I'm glad that group would be our next generation of engineers.. Nice job #Olin 2020...

So, the whole point of cancelling commencement was to avoid large public gatherings to prevent the spread of the corona virus. Yet they decided to do it on their own? And this plan was supported by faculty? Are they all this clueless? If I were an employer I would have serious doubts about the intelligence of Olin graduates.

Wait, these are supposed to be smart people. The social distancing policies aren't for you to try to work around by just avoiding "official" events. Also, you'd think a college would want to set an example of social responsibility for their graduates. Just because you're outside doesn't make this good. We know this even a week ago when this happened.

Why do you think they cancelled the official commencement? Do you really need the government to tell you this wasn't a good idea? These are supposed to be smart people. I cancelled flights to Florida in February because it was clear by then what was happening. There's no real excuse for this.
