Oliver 880 Valve Adjustment and RETURN to WORK

A bit of a rain delay gave me time to replace the bent push rod and adjust the valve clearance on the 880. From there it's just a matter of putting it on the auger and seeing how well it runs.

Chris, I have a couple of John Deere B's, so I guess that makes me a John Deere guy. However, I have been entertaining the thought of buying an Oliver as I could use a slightly more modern tractor. So in my search for Oliver information on RU-vid, I had found your channel a week ago and now have been binge watching your videos. I take my hat off to you. You provide very informative and entertaining videos. It is fun to watch a good mechanic who truly knows his subject material. Thank you. Best Regard, Dave Demick

@Oliver 880 That is not a bad idea. Yes, budget is a concern for me. However, I don't see many Olivers in my area. I do know where a 1750 has been sitting for some years. I have ninety eight acres, and do some skidding logs, brush hogging, snow plowing and land clearing. I am getting tendonitis in my arms, so power steering, live hydraulics and live PTO are looking quite attractive to me. Best Regard, Dave

We've always had really good luck with "Bars Leak" for coolant leaks. Didn't plug up our rad's. Of course, we blocked off the rad's to get that engine "hot" so the bars leak would work. Good to see the old gal up and running again all proper like. Cheers :)

880 was a great tractor. My dad and his brother farmed together for a number of years. Dad had the Super 88 diesel and my uncle had the 880 diesel. They were wonderfully matched at plowing. In the heavy clay around Newport, MI the Super 88 with three bottoms and the 880 with four would pull at the same ground speed. We could plow all day and never get in each other's way. I found the power boost to be very handy, hit a tough spot, pull the power boost into low range and power through. The Super without that feature required a stop and downshift. The only thing I hated was the front mounted cultivators, I despised them. I much preferred rear mounted. Great to see the progress being made on your 880.

It does work. It feels like there is good pressure going into direct, and under hasn't slipped, but I haven't pulled anything with it yet. Maybe i can find time to hook it up to a plow this fall and see how good it really is.

Great video Chris. Saw sign and paid my respects to Vern Losey on Find-A-Grave. Intersting info on him. Families evolve over time. I was raised in Michigan. I found out the other day by extensive research that my gg grandmother and family were out in Kansas in 1885. She left the old man and went back to Michigan near Lennon. My gg grandfather died 1918 in Kansas and is buried near Ogden. He never remarried. Keep em rolling. Godspeed. Eaglegards...

Vern and family, along with the Losey clan from this area all moved to Canada in the early 1900s. Great grandma hated it there, and Vern eventually relented. They moved back to Michigan and bought the farm we are at now. The rest of the Loseys remained in Canada.

Well looky there, got the old 880 Oliver running like a top, congrats on that Chris. Sounds good, no real struggle with the auger on the soybeans. It's always satisfying when you have a successful fix on a tractor. My son and I need to work on his Massey 285, having issues with it not wanting to start easy. Two years ago we put a new head gasket on it and we did reset the valve lash, but maybe the lift pump is going out, he had the fuel pump rebuilt in 2019, so I think that's okay. Anyways, an enjoyable video, liked it, thanks for sharing, have a great Sunday and rest of week.

@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris Год назад
What's crazy to me is Oliver was dominating the diesel tractor market, then they put all that work into the XO-121. It seems like after that they put their efforts into gas. It did show that there was more efficiency to be had from a gasoline engine, but they were never going to get to the level of the diesel.

@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 5 месяцев назад
Check that all the linkage moves freely, sticky linkage can make them jumpy. Also there is a screw on the front of the governor called the bump screw. That's for when the rpm surges. You could try turning that in and see if it helps. Just try like a half a turn at a time and check it again.

Do you currently have only 1 lever? If so chances are the valve is not in there. You would have to take the housing off the unit, remove the cover plate and replace tgat with a valve, add a lever to the cover and put it all back together. R 880 had done torque and it was hard to drive because if you were going downhill it would lock up and if you were backing up a hill or down a hill it would lock up also so you always had to pull the torque back but then you had to watch it because it went in the freewheeling and all the neighbors always tore that torch out of their tractor because they always thought they could pull it in low range and it would wear out that little gear so so why didn't they leave it in high because after they tore out the torque they had to do that anyway
