Director Oliver Stone joined Ron Suskind, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, for a conversation about his upcoming film Snowden. In a both informative and entertaining Forum, Stone explained the artistic process and difficulties of translating the controversial story of Edward Snowden into a film. While answering questions from the audience, Stone touched on his work in prior films, his motivation in telling political stories through cinema, and his views on the state of America’s government surveillance programs.

Exactly. Oliver Stone came with Dr. Peter Kuznick, history prof at Princeton, to the Lobera Theater in Santa Barbara to discuss their great co-authored book, THE UNTOLD HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES (later turned into a 10, and then 12-part video series). It too was very honest lively meeting of the mids. Oliver Stone sets the record straight by showing the other side of corporate power in the U.S. After all, the NSA (the National Security Administration) was established after the death of FDR, and its members consist of the Fortune 500, for the very reason they would insure there was never another FDR, a president of the people, vs president of corporations. THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES tells this story, that Oliver Stone aptly refers to as "a continuation of Howard Zinn's great work, THE PEOPLE'S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES." Zinn's book and Stone/Kuznick's book are definitely worth reading. There is a struggle between ordinary men and the corporate autocracy

The so-called intelligence community-especially the one glamorized constantly in film and tv and operating illegally on American soil, are problematic because they are traitors who have taken an oath to an evil entity first and foremost. The secrecy is a given when you serve an evil empire instead of the people. @@wiffleone I don't disagree in part. Faith became more doctrinal and myopic and less relational both spiritually and socially due to the "higher ed" system. But it works both ways. It's not the faith itself that controls and is the opiate of the people. "Faith" has long since been infiltrated and hijacked as have the tools of faith such as scripture, by those within and outside of whichever faith and with ulterior motives. It is the manipulators who use the tools to create divisions and use those divisions to take control while those divided are arguing over details and territorial nonsense, translations and transliterations. Humanity needs to learn to be wiser and less distracted with the microscopic details of faith that divide us and stay focused on those issues that are common to all. When manipulators are shunned like a fox in the henhouse---their effectiveness against humanity will wither.

If there is a roomful of Snowdens then that’s just an indictment on the level of unacceptable abuse of power. If what a whistleblower exposes is true then it should be the people in power that should be charged and not the whistleblowers.

It's important directors like Oliver Stone are around to cast a critical eye on established Gov't story lines and to lend the proper "interpretative" treatment to significant global events that shape our present and future. Of course, the truth is always closer to the intersection of two or more opposing points of view, something only the most thorough and committed films makers aim for... and Oliver Stone has followed that prescription perfectly with his recounting of some of the most tragic and defining historical events in living memory. A master story teller of events that in all likelihood will never be fully uncovered or detailed.

Snowden wouldn't have needed to sacrifice his way of life and become a whistle blower if the institution he worked for followed the law, also believed in their oath to defend/protect our constitution & one of its heads didn't lie to congress. If all our institutions did follow our laws, defend & protect our constitution, there would be less to blow a whistle on. There is nothing wrong w/whistle blowers, they're exposing wrongs. There should be nothing wrong w/exposing wrongs. If lone or institutional law/constitution violators new whistle blowers were protected and honored, they would be much less tempted to violate our laws & constitution & try to work w/in them or submit a request to change the law via proper channels, presenting their argument as to why this change is needed, fast track it if time sensitive. In a way, a whistle blower is a sleeper agent for defending our laws & constitution, the more the better.

You get the government you deserve. If you turn a blind eye to a lying self-serving government then you deserve that government. Obama, before politics, was very vocal about the need for whistle blowers and that it was a societies responsibility to protect the bravery it took to do so. Since he has been President he has only strengthened laws and punishment of whistle blowers. Obama also said he would get out of the Middle East, close Guantanamo Bay and claw back the wholesale stripping of citizen rights via mass surveillance and we know where that went. What did Americans do to punish him for lying, voted him in for a second term. You get the government you deserve.

Like all centres of power governments eventually push the boundaries to get away with as much as we let them. They must be held accountable in the eyes of the public. In a democracy a competent media should play a key role in that. In the absence of a competent media, which we certainly don't have, that leaves whistle-blowers. If the whistle-blowers are charged or neutralised, like Snowden and Assange, then God help us. So, God help us!

Mr Snowden is an idealist. To perform an heroic act, I think idealism is often an essential ingredient of character. Many young people who are raised in military families are this sort. Other whistle-blowers have such family backgrounds. I doubt that anyone with a good background in American history would be idealistic. It is particularly a mistake of youth. His act of self-sacrifice was not honored by the American people. Our people are poorly educated and richly propagandized by corporate media. I think of the three, Assange, Manning, and Snowden who have challenged the imperial US state, Snowden has fared the best - living now in Russia with his wife in good circumstances. Julian Assange, a great hero who has not committed any criminal acts, suffers the most. Australia's governments have behaved disgracefully towards their honorable citizen and showed themselves to be cowardly in their subservience to US governments as has Sweden and the UK.

I find noteworthy how many very intelligent people are raised believing the American mythology. A large fraction of the miseducated come from upper middle-class homes, raised by parents who themselves have had the benefits of US education. Ignorance of what was done as the American government extended its reach from the colonies that declared independence from Britain to the mid-Pacific and beyond is broad and for generations deep. Its breadth certainly included the poor and the more recent arrivals to the American scene. Only within a small fraction of the working class had the insights of 19th century European intellectuals opened their eyes to American class warfare and imperialism by the capitalist ruling class. Thus it is that we find that so many among those who became whistle-blowers were idealists, volunteers for Vietnam or members of the CIA and NSA, disillusioned but earnest patriots, rebels with a cause. They were truly victims of their upbringing and education.

I think in many people's hearts, they'd love to be a "Snowden" who would commit, to such a task as he did[as Steven Drake, William Binney, and others, also] and not for himself, not at all, and I suspect, his decision was agonising over just what the resulting damage to him personally, that would happen.

Goebbels knew how to create an oppinion and hatefull athmosphere towards the jews through propaganda. He was a master manipulator and the Germans bought it from him. His skills as a propagandist is somehow the main reason our family abandoned the German part of my fathers family.

Americans are being propagandized right now. Republicans and Democrats are pushed to hate each other. Think how nasty politics has gotten in the last 20-30 years. Republicans started it maybe it's vicious now. We look at each other not as opposing viewpoints and both sides want what's best for the country, now it's the enemy. You gotta ask yourself who benefits from this discord and hatred 🤔. The usual suspects, the rich and powerful 😡

Very interesting discussion. It seems to boil down to if the constitution is the supreme law of the land or the NSA and CIA are exempt from it. Whistleblowers usually argue for separation of powers thru following the constitution and that power corrupts.

"The fear would be a president which would create a room full of Snowden's" what? Oliver didn't say that the interviewer inserted that himself, why is he saying Oliver said that. Is he confused or is he trying to control the conversation? Oliver said we desperately need whistle blowers.

@Tranequious Jones Uh it was a general comment not a directive, chill down. Hidden Persuasions is a book , not a movie, and I offered that up as suggestion for those bright enough and with desire to understand a bit more. Such as why soft drinks are at the back of a food store and not closer to the front. Why some products are on the middle shelf and others on the top. Why some use red vs maud for labels. Silly innocuous things which might amuse some readers.

It's distasteful to me how Stone talks about adding "Drama" to this movie. He shares about being scared that the movie would not sell because of this. So he adds a sex scene between Lindsay and Ed. I, as a woman, could have done without it. I believe this story has captured the world. I'm sure millions are interested in Ed's story and how he has been treated by the US. Personally, I am very interested in this story as I feel for Ed as well as Julian Assange. It shows the lack of integrity and honesty that is missing in government and how journalists are treated for writing about things they feel are important . That is what is important in this movie. I am not interested in sex, car chases or shootouts.

By the way, I was giving my opinion as a woman. I find many movies today, especially when the director is a man, to have things in them that I don't like (and I am not in any way putting men directors down). However, if you look at a movie like, "It's a Wonderful Life", which I believe was directed by a man, it is very different. I don't think I have to be a director to give my opinion here on RU-vid. Many people do. You don't have to be so mean to say that I'm Naive and for me to put my money where my mouth is. I like movies that have sensitivity in them. That's me and I believe I have every right to feel the way I do and to express myself.

Agree. The infiltrated business of film is also a club first and a business. The rules of the club no longer offer happy, bright, family films, straight historic remakes or dramatized documentaries without some level of propaganda and or unnecessary bathroom and sex scenes, drug use and strip club etc. You are dealing with a high level of perversion which thrives on corruption and desensitization. Research, Tavistock Institute. and then think sa t an ists.

I watched with interest the discussion of the movie and its content. What I come away with is this. For all the good people in government who want our constitution to prevail there are a mountain of people who don’t care about whats right or whats wrong. It’s like using a hammer to chip away at Mt. Everest to remove it. Sadly in the end the mountain will remain till the of of time or in another term till our country will self destruct, from within.

Their (Harvard's) A.V. club perhaps aught not be entrusted with this responsibility in future when the solution is so glaringly obvious - if someone with ears had been involved in testing the microphone when (oh who would have imagined ) the speaker's head "moved."
