Olivia Newton John Reaction
If Not For You Reaction
Bob Dylan Reaction
Empress Reaction
In 1971, singer Olivia Newton-John released "If Not for You" as her first international single, after gaining prominence through her appearances on Cliff Richard's concert tours and the TV show It's Cliff Richard.[80] Marking the start of her 1970s country pop period,[80] the recording featured an arrangement closer to Harrison's version than to Dylan's.[81][82] It was one of many examples of middle-of-the-road artists seeking to achieve hit songs by covering tracks from All Things Must Pass.[82]
The single enjoyed considerable international success, peaking at number 7 in the UK and number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US.[80][81] The song also spent three weeks at number 1 on Billboard's Easy Listening chart.[83] It was subsequently issued as the title track of Newton-John's debut album, If Not for You.

This went to #1 in US ac charts, first one out of the box. She really did not want to record this one and had to be talked into it. Ironically, it happens to be her husbands favorite of hers. Oh... and if anyone tries to tell you there is a ‘demo’ of this song floating around.. it DOES NOT exist. It is only the same song with left side stereo only (cuts out all the waa waa waa).

Have You Never Been Mellow will always be my fav ONJ song 💯. It was the first album I ever bought as a teenage boy. I wore out those grooves and would fall asleep listening to it. It still amazes me that ONJ’s initial success in the US was in Country music. She won her first Grammy as a Country artist and was also voted the 1974 CMA Female Vocalist of the Year, beating out the likes of Dolly, Loretta Lynn, Tanya Tucker and Anne Murray. And she did it without even living in the US at the time! It wasn’t until 1976 that ONJ left the UK and settled over here at the urging of her friend and fellow Aussie, Helen Reddy. Helen Reddy was the Queen of 70s Pop and your girl ONJ wisely headed to LA rather than Nashville, as her CMA win had inadvertently caused a huge schism to form within Country music. A new genre called country-pop (or pop-country) had taken hold due to ONJ, Mac Davis, Anne Murray, etc and this pissed off the country “traditionalists” so much they actually quit the CMA for a while. “Pop” artists recording Country music found it difficult to get airplay or receive recognition in Nashville- Glen Campbell (Rhinestone Cowboy) and John Denver (Take Me Home, Country Roads) are 2 notable artists that faced the backlash. However, all the fuss was really quite shady because at the same time there was a huge stampede of country acts crossing over into pop (Dolly, Lynn Anderson, Crystal Gayle), getting huge airplay and racking up gold records. ONJ wisely made the decision to head to LA and said goodbye to Nashville. Just 2 years later, Grease would make her into a global superstar. Today, Keith Urban (Australia) and Shania Twain (Canada) are country LEGENDS, but Nashville was not very welcoming to outsiders after ONJ’s CMA win. The following year (1975) Charlie Rich famously lit 🔥 the envelope for CMA Entertainer of the Year on fire with his lighter when he had to announce John Denver as the winner. Even the recent controversy with Lil Nas and Old Town Road shows that Country music is still having the same argument with itself. My rule is if it sounds “country” (vocals, arrangement, instrumentation) and tells a story- then it’s “country”- no matter who is singing it. We all got some country in us.

@@EmpressReacts By the way, Tammy Wynette was one of those “traditionalists” who left the CMA. She was married to George Jones at the time and looks like Miss Tammy decided to “stand by her man” to protest the influx of pop into country, which was being called “countrypolitan” by some. The whole fuss died down a couple of years later when George and Tammy got a D-I-V-O-R-C-E. 😂 Always found that a bit strange because Tammy had a huge crossover pop/dance hit with her 1991 collab with The KLF called “Justified and Ancient.” You should give it a listen sometime. It literally made her a household name again with a younger urban crowd. Then Hillary Clinton caused quite the stir when she gave that infamous quote “I’m not sitting here some little woman standing by my man like Tammy Wynette.” Tammy loved her some drama in her music and real life. 😂

ONJ certainly had her share of cute, innocent, infectious songs pre Xanadu. She was considered crossover pop as her music/ sound was influenced by country western music. Give a listen to "Let Me Be There"! You'll love her killer vocals, tambourine & "barbershop" backup singers. Fun song! I think her biggest 70s hit was "Have You Never Been Mellow". I think she sings it mostly in the 1st soprano range, head voice throughout.

I'm some way this reminded me definitely of Linda Ronstand
@tomrobinsondc
@tomrobinsondc 3 года назад
I love ONJ, but Linda Ronstadt was A-List in the music biz when Olivia started. Linda started in the mid-1960s as lead singer for the Stone Poneys, a folk-rock and Country-rock group. After a successful run with them she went solo and while she has always crossed many genres in the early 70s she was touring with Neil Young, the Doors and Jackson Browne. By the time 1974 rolled around her Heart Like a Wheel album was #1 on Billboard with huge singles “You’re No Good” and “When Will I Be Loved.” She was always a belter and considered the first female arena rock star. Some of Linda’s later Country work might remind you of early ONJ, though I think Linda really made it big as a full-on rock diva.
