I'm 35 and I've been quitting for years, then coming back to it and running away every time I write a bad song. It's horrible. Today I sat and finished something. Actually wrote a song with music and lyrics and verses and a chorus. It's not great, obviously, but it's finished. I'm just terrified that I'm going to walk away and forget how to do it tomorrow.

Dude I'm 17 years old, literally half your age and not somebody you'd want to take advice from. But let me tell you, it's most prolly not a bad song, you just have to keep at it and try to make good choices. Inorder to make a choice, you need to have options; but how will you get more options, you ask? The answer is to consistently get back to listening, making efforts and having discipline to do it every day( atleast every 4 days). You can see yourself doing so much more in quantity than you did before. My second advice, okay now you have quantity, but what about quality? Inorder to achieve quality you should be in search of: a) inspiration, b) other people's songs and work, c) songwriting and poetry rules and basics, d) Indulge more in poetry. Last advice, inorder to achieve the first two, it is really important to follow a single, easy rule: Letting go of your inhibitions and just trying. Do it for yourself and don't try to get a perfect song or idea every time a idea hits you or you sit down to write. It takes a lot of time and patience AND most importantly being less critical. Appreciate yourself more and how far you've come along. You can't expect a 1st grader to solve a calculus question, same way don't compare your level 1 to somebody else's level 100. I really hope this helps you or just gives you some kinda boost. These are things I wish somebody had told me when I felt the least bit confident in my writing. It took me a long time to accept where I am and not totally rely on other's validation of my work. I'm happy to say I'm atleast at a level 15/20 now :)

Great channel, great content. I like the way you serve small portions. My personal songwriting advice would be: ONE: Seek silence, disconnect every potential (digital) distraction. Really allow yourself to get into a deep flow state when opening yourself for inspiration. Really get to the core of your idea / message / emotion. Meditating and walking helps. TWO: Write your lyrics and notes on paper. (Get a big notebook with enough space to scribble comments in the marge.) Get organized and keep track of different versions of a lyric. I see many young writers typing on their phones and backspacing old lines to write new ones. Always keep your old lines! You'll often find that you want to go back to your initial state of mind when writing a new song, even if you need to polish the lines or the idea. Keep all your previous versions, and alternate lyrics.

Omg this is so true. It’s wild how I’ll look back on songs I’ve written even years ago and I realize “DAM that is PERFECT for the song I’m trying to write TODAY, & I totally needed to go through what I did these past couple years to even UNDERSTAND/ COMPLETE what I was trying to say years ago.” It’s all a part of a much bigger plan.

It is a contradiction forever because it’s about writing subjects people can relate to but then being yourself but then not straying from yourself and emulate your favorite writers but wait don’t do write for anyone else. Well if you want to make $ you have to be mindful of your audience. I mean making $ doing what you love is rare to become. Sometimes I think in rhymes or poetry, I don’t do it on purpose. It’s just who I am, I am a writer. I am a story teller. If you grow up in a toxic household with toxic parents/family members, it isn’t easy to nurture yourself. Like I had no guidance or mentors growing up. Like I didn’t have someone encouraging me to keep trying and to go further, I felt ashamed for my love of music. I felt shame for the happiness it brought me, because I didn’t know that it was okay to be happy. Well that went off topic, but another story to tell that I know many can relate to. ♥️

cheers CULTOFCARISSA, I can totally relate. It's about writing from the emotions those things cause, we all have the same emotions so we can all relate to them. Thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it.

Thanks for making the video! I consider myself a writer because I’ve been writing since I was a small child, I started journaling to escape the fighting around me. And I’ve never stopped writing, I don’t read much. I prefer “audible reading” I just made that up idk if it’s a thing or not. Because I learn so much by listening to songs and I contribute everything I know about writing poetry from absorbing the music I listened to like a sponge. I did grow up in a music passionate family, going to concerts, even a cruise for a band 2x. But the toxicity didn’t allow for my growth and now it’s in my own hands. I love to sing. But I went to 3 teachers from ages 16-19 and they all told me they a. Couldn’t hear me I’m too shy b. Maybe you can dance you’re very pretty I got discouraged and felt stupid for believing I could actually sing. Yet I have never lost the gut feeling about singing and I’ve become more comfortable with it and I tend to miss up my own lyrics to songs to practice singing with music but idk I’m ranting. I am seeking lessons again 10 years later and I’m not saying I’m an amazing writer or anything I’m just saying I’m a writer. In a communicator whether it’s writing, talking, singing, speaking, how I look, I communicate. I suppose that’s what art truly is, communicating something in a unique way to others. Trying to finish up English 2 this semester SO I CAN FINALLY take a creative writing class. Oh do I despise writing mla style essays...

I believe that listening to books and lyrics can be just as beneficial as reading them. I often look up lyrics I can’t hear right away, and another good tip is to read the lyrics to a song you love while listening to the song. That is double absorption that’s a good technique I love to do. You get a feel for the song in such a deeper way like you’re really going with the artist’s words because you don’t miss any it’s surprisingly easy to read lyrics and listen to the song at the same time.

I literally feel a shift afyer 10pm. Where suddenly lyrics just start to appear in my mind. According to Ayruveda different times are good for different things. You want to try write during the vata times of the day. The ability to find words quickly is also associated with the throar chakra. So doing vocal exercises will in tandum inprove your ability to create. Something thrt works every time for me is taking a shower.

I have zero knowledge about musical instruments and singing. But I like writing poetry and songs. Sometimes I feel the music in my head playing while I am writing a song. But I can't put it visually due to lack of music skills. Can I still write songs?
@SongWritersChopShop
@SongWritersChopShop 3 года назад
Of course you can. When I started writing I didn't play an instrument. A good exercise is to write new lyrics to songs that you like. That way, you get used to writing words that fit into certain rhythms. If you understand the rhythm in your lyrics, you can set them to any kind of music.

often those who have success early got lot of songwriting private coaching or family related musicians. but lot of people who do also don’t necessarily have success ever. she was a Disney actress lot of them crossover to music but idk how many succeed. Her co-writer on the song is 38y.o. time will tell how much she can create on her own. its about many things one which is being able to be honest about what you want to say in the song, lot of people try to be artsy and beat around it, this song goes straight to the point. another thing is try and fail a lot. even for accomplished career songwriters it can be 100 bad songs and you gotta keep pushing then one or more song are great. but a lot of people stop trying too early. while keeping on educating yourself and improving the craft. then its also about getting in rooms with people who have experience and don’t get in the way of the creative flow in the room. in music creation hub cities like nashville or L.A. the knowledge and skills grow exponentially fast compared to other town with not as many passionate skilled creators. lot of music focusing about performance doesn’t really teach creation that much. when you cut through that noise you can find and learn the best stuff from a few great books too those are not so expensive and free if they have it at your library. got to be self-motivated to read and teach yourself or check some songwriting college program

Yes that’s how 99% of teenagers become pop stars, or famous artists. They have help, connections, supportive home lives, they were nurtured and loved. Their talents and what they loved to do was paid attention to by their parents. I will always feel jealous and resent in the back of my mind for people who have privileges I don’t have. Because I grew up in a toxic household and it’s still hard. It’s taken me 20 years to just feel comfortable singing OUT LOUD BY MYSELF. I can’t hold anything against these young women or men because it isn’t their fault they were born where they were. I don’t know what they went through. I don’t know their struggles. I can only move forward and tell the story that you are telling and I want to tell as well. I want to talk about what it’s like not having that extra help, and other topics that are close to my heart.
