Damn, that’s genius. I never thought about it that way. I always wondered how can a director better direct their actors. And yeah you kinda have to treat them like your children and help shape them and tap into their mindset. Especially actors, a profession that puts people at their most vulnerable mentally, which can be detrimental when just saying something like “this doesn’t work”. I’m looking forward to Olivia’s next projects!

Yeah! Directors have to effectively convey what they want to actors bc it’s basically teamwork while filming scenes. The actor has to be on the same page as the director for it to work, and the director has to make sure they’re on the same page without making it difficult for the actor to get back into character due to self doubt.

Pro trick: watch movies at Flixzone. I've been using them for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.

Isn't the process she's describing like working without ego? or existing without ego? Being with children and giving them those options means you're not willing to just dictate your way, you want to give them the option of seeing your way. Even if they aren't able to grasp the entirety of what you're conveying, the respect that is shown when someone gives you a patient explanation, that's some of the truest respect there is.

That was a good impression of Scorsese's style of speaking. He's a very fast paced speaker.

She's so right, directing is about an exchange of ideas and not being afraid to say lets see what would happen if the actor could do something different next take. Rather than say to an actor no that's not it because the actor might be getting close to what the scene is calling for just not there yet.

Just as in Any business, learning from the ground up (so to speak) helps us all have perspective into what others need and are going thru to get what they need to do

Exactly what she said, so many directors throw the the problem right back to the actor when who’s suppose to direct? Hello?

I see two extreme kinds of parents at food courts. One kind is bossy and tries to straightjacket their kids. The other kind is beaming with love and interest and guides the kids into more harmonious behaviour. Everybody suffers with the first kind and everyone basks in a sunny love with the second kind. I wish Olivia would teach parenting.

In a way, from her anecdote directing could be seen as acting. Great advice.

Chris Ducat hahah but I feel like she means that in the sense that actors are very vulnerable while doing particular scenes and stuff

And most actors will wholeheartedly agree with her. Good actors are like children-- emotionally honest to a fault.

Which is why a LOT of directors don't like to direct actors...and directors that don't have kids? You're speaking another language, lady!!! lol...

It reminds me of a story I heard about the original Blade Runner. Harrison Ford hated working on that movie because Ridley Scott was more immersed in the technical aspects of the movie and wouldn't talk a lot to Ford, which was why Ford felt often isolated and unsure if he was doing good work. I don't remember where I read that but the way it was described their work dynamic was quite reminiscent to parental neglect?
@eme.261

A director who dislikes working with actors is usually a shitty director, especially outside of the action genre.
@TheyMadeMePickAName

@@eme.261 We give Hitchcock sooo much credit for being Hitchcock, but we should also respect the actors working with him for putting up with his bullshit.
