Exactly my worst allergies have come from "natural" products. Consumers need to look into each individual ingredient instead of falling for "natural" marketing.
@@isabellabettoni1152 good products have good ingredients formulated to be good for your skin...like VitC is amazing for skin, but applying lemon or orange juice to skin for VitC is BAD..Poison ivy isn't a natural product, it is a natural ingredient.
But I think sometimes there are people that like to stick to one product line so there aren't weird potential interactions amongst active ingredients, idk 🤷
I love how she said “dermatologists said this, but SURELY that’s not a good idea” as if dermatologists (emphasis on the implication that she saw multiple and they all suggested these things) wouldn’t know what is and isn’t safe to put on the skin
Also love how she doesn’t realize that the reasons you can’t use certain things while pregnant has nothing to do with your health and is either because 1) it hasn’t been tested on pregnant women so it’s better safe than sorry, or 2) is absorbed into the body and thus the fetus and that could harm the child because fetuses don’t have the same defenses as adults.
Right? I hate when so many influencers talk as if dermatologists don’t know what they’re doing as if they didn’t spend years and years studying skin 🤦🏼♀️ all she’s putting on her skin is fragrance from essential oils thinking it’s good cuz it’s “natural”
@@ninakara585 a lot of essential oils are irritating in the long term if used at the wrong percentage and aren't fresh but there are also essential oils with proven soothing and rejuvenating benefits, and a few even can be used on pregnant women and 3 months babies Pubmed the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health literally has tons of studies of proven benefits of essential oils. Both conventional and natural skincare products have pros and cons. Science debunks the anti essential oil propaganda too, the founder of Osmia organics is a certified medical doctor and she created a natural skincare brand, dermatologists just like all health professionnals get bonuses when they promote certain brands I know this for a fact as I used to work to for a call center where I had to call doctors for big name labs in France.
Candyprincess971 oh wow thank you for that I’ve been always told not to put anything with essential oils on my face cuz they have the same chemical bond that perfume contains. Do u know exactly which ones are good for soothing sensitive skin? Cuz I would love to try and have my mind changed thanks 😊
Also From what I know a big reason why they r irritating is because they oxidize very quickly and that itself makes it irritating so it’s just best to avoid and not risk it. I’m all for natural extracts tho especially aloe in moisturizer has helped my sensitive skin a ton!
I also love that many of these comments are pointing out that many celebrities don't know anything at all. Harper's Bazaar, you are showing content to a very well-informed audience, we have better expectations. Olivia also said that she was never good at chemistry, so don't you think she should educate herself before preaching to the choir because all of her "information" just sounds ridiculous.
Alondra Torres that’s a really good point. Harpers Bazaar needs to step it up, we aren’t wowed by celebrities with no knowledge of skincare and routines that really are advertisements.

Magda Lena ahh, I was about to hit play but your comment and a few others have set my expectations to low. But holy moly it’s an informercial. It is so disappointing! As an esthetician, reading the comments puts a mental smile on my face ;). I'm glad the viewers are informed of the bull**** hype when it comes to the terms "chemicals" and "natural". This line maybe good, but don't degrade other products because you're advocating ONE brand in your routine. Olivia Wilde is a millionaire, I'm sure she sees an esthetician regularly to manage her skin and doesn't just rely on this one little brand...
But aren't you glad that some people want to stay away from chemicals that are bad for human health and the environment and about waste and that she's talking about that ?
@@coquelicot2947 what chemicals would that be? because the fragrance chemicals she is telling us to put on our skin is so SO bad for us and every skin type...also, most mineral oils and paraffins used in skincare are subsidies of the energy industry and are highly refined before being added to products...so, they are hardly causing or contributing to global warming...the only good thing she said was to eat less meat and recycle clothes
@@coquelicot2947 the sustainability part is fine, but you can advocate for sustainability without spreading misinformation about skincare that could potentially damage people's skin. It's the way she spoke about skincare that really rubbed me the wrong way, as if she knew better than a professional what people should be putting on their skin lmao.
@@Heedy770 ok, fragrances are irritants, essential oils too but how many ingredients are endocrine disruptors wich is way worse and don't worry about very strong irritants and allergens on beauty products that are not essential oils and fragrances
@@Heedy770 just a question, i don't know if you are from thé US but if you are, don't you have an app that can "read" what are the ingredients in your products and tell you the risks etc. Not that it's perfect but really it helps to stay away from things that are proven to be very unsafe...
The reason why the tell you not to use certain products is because it can be absorbed into the bloodstream and into the fetus. And also they can’t do testing on pregnant people because they don’t know the long term affects of it on the fetus.
Idk if it's just me but I think she's somehow trying to insert something political in a skincare routine video. There's no way she didn't know that she's going to push some people's buttons by referring to a fetus as a "parasite". Anyway, I agree with you. You're supposed to eliminate certain things from your routine when pregnant because you don't really know how it's gonna affect the fetus, although those things are usually okay to use when you're not pregnant because the effects on non-pregnant women are already studied, therefore it's deemed safe. It's not because you're not worth taking care of. Like, come on.
That's so Shannon exactly! They do this in an ABUNDANCE OF CAUTION. even my doctor said you can probably still use your products but we just HAVE to tell u not to bc we don’t test on pregnant people.
Just a infomercial. Olivia Wilde is the True Botanicals Chief Brand Activist Why doesn’t she or Harper’s Bazar inform that she works for the brand, this is just a infomercial, I don’t like her and now I don’t trust these products, and I’ve used the product, not as good as she says.
With the new FTC regulations they legally have to inform us about that. They definitely need to think about that for future videos or they could get in legal trouble.
It reads, "The actress and activist recently joined forces with True Botanicals, a certified nontoxic beauty company, to serve as chief brand activist". LOL!! The bs terms they are using...it's like double-speak!!
Pregnant women also can’t eat sushi or deli meat but those aren’t toxic to you. There are things that aren’t harmful to you but can be harmful to a developing fetus.
I'm a long time Olivia Wilde fan and her skin is totally flawless but this was so patronizing, girl! Also I love vitamin c and retinol, there are tons of studies on these and retinol has been around for years.
when she says 'chemicals that dermatologist recommend, id she referring to ahas and bhas?? because last time I checked, those are also natural from sugarcane, willowbark, fruit enzymes, etc. correct me if i'm wrong
Which is funny because retinol is quite literally just Vitamin A and proven times and times again to be amazing for acne, it’s funny she mentions smell too because retinols literally have no smell

Olivia stop fear mongering by using terms like "toxic" and "chemicals", everything is a chemical! You advocate for fragrance which has been shown to lead to skin irritation and allergies and you're worried about chemicals? This "routine" is just an advertisement for True Botanicals, another brand that capitalizes on the trend of being clean and all natural.
They asked her to share what she likes and uses - they asked for her opinion. This is her opinion. The fragrance she is referring to is the fragrance from the oils, not added fragrance, which is what you are talking about.
Resveratrol (not pronounced resperatrol) is found in grape skin and not apple skin 🙄 Quercetin and malus domestica is found in apple peels which is also in this antioxidant booster.
? After you've cleansed you have no barrier left, and even if you just splash your face with water in the morning and put some oil on your face, it will be absorbed few minutes later :)
Honey you’re wrong. Start with jojoba oil it’s the closest oil to your natural sebum. Learn about ceramides, vitamin C serums, hyaluronic acid, lipids that must penetrate that’s what carrier oils are for. It’s chemistry and science, not opinions. To those who don’t like her product choices fine it’s not different from doctors different brands yet simple products with no sulfates suds strip like certain shampoos. Here’s an example if you use Hydrocortisone makes the skin thin just like certain chemicals. All the natural is bad talk isn’t the point it’s what chemicals are they would you wash your face with Windex? Use acidic cleaners and forget the gloves? Doubt it doesn’t matter what her choice of products are the majority use oils period.
As a skincare professional, I can’t handle this series 🤦🏼♀️ I almost screamed when she brought up the face oils. Facial oils do not penetrate the skin. Oils sit on top of your skin.
@@PtolemyXVII oils do not “dry out the skin” lmao, what on earth are you on about and where did you get that idea? They don’t hydrate the skin, but there’s a huge difference between something having desiccating abilities and just not being a humectant lol. Provided oils are applied to skin that’s already hydrated, they do a decent job at helping to reduce TEWL and smoothing over the skin (though if TEWL is genuinely a concern you really need an occlusive like petroleum jelly to actually create a proper barrier as such).
@@sunscreenhoarder6558 oils break down collagen due to its omega 3/6/9 content, hence skin needs the right amount of water to oil ratio to keep it hydrated. You can suffocate your skin with too much oil, in addition some oils accelerate hyperpigmentation

@@Heedy770 If you are referring to essential oils when you say "natural fragrance" then you are incredibly incorrect, I don't know where you get your information from, essential oils have been used on the skin for centuries. I don't claim all natural things are good for you, just like all chemicals aren't bad for you, but the arguments some people are having on this video have no practical relevance. The woman uses natural skin care not laden with chemicals. If you are fine with synthetic chemicals, by all means, slather yourself in them 👍
Do you? She’s a consumer, as many of us are. This video is made for consumers, not a lecture hall. She’s reviewing what she likes as a recommendation, not as a derm. There’s a time and a place. If you want to know the chemistry behind it stop watching this and go take ochem. Unfortunately you’ll probably not want to use any pcps anymore after you know what’s in them.
Quinn Reed I mean, they don’t have to be experts. This is not an educational series. It’s purely for entertainment. It’s like a film version of those spreads in magazines where they’d interview a celebrity and ask what skincare and makeup they use. I agree it’s annoying when they confidently give (arguably) terrible skincare advice, but I also try to remember that no one is forcing me to follow their directions.
I'm even fine with people not knowing...but the ones like her that talk like they know better than dermatologists and then recommend perfumes for skin are so annoying
The real problem is that they pretend they do know, they have the arrogance to be so certain about things even though they're actually very ignorant on the subject.
yeah...all the products are in FROSTED GLASS (which isn't recycled) and have plastic pumps and lids....she is so full of herself and self congratulatory
She's the chief brand activist for this brand. She joined in 2017. Google Olivia Wilde True Botanicals and their announcement will pop up. Girl, I'll stick to my CeraVe unscented cleanser and my the ordinary products. Thanks.
Smelling good does not equal good for you... I looked up the brand she used and although they dont have added fragrances, they do have lavender oil, fruit oils (watermelon, red raspberry, grapefruit) which are doing absolutely nothing besides making it smell good. For some people, they could cause more irritation, inflammation and acne. I'd rather use a simple lactic acid serum or rose hip oil that smells meh but I know has ingredients that have purpose
It drives me crazy when they do their routine with rings on. I can’t even pay attention to what she did besides try to sell this brand Why is she spraying her face after applying oil and a night mask
I guess, but it's just the irony coming from the celebrities who stand behind brands like this or the EWG. Then they have perfect hair which probably gets done every 4 weeks, foreheads that done move, and lip injections. Which is fine, but they really need to stop abusing the word chemical and toxic. Same with all these big young living reps who claim everything is toxic but have ice blonde hair, it's laughable.
@@Haley_Wozniak That's a fair point but I also think you can limit things where you can and still have valid reasons for limiting them. For example, many people recycle but still order from Amazon. Many people try reducing the amount of meat or processed sugar they eat overall. You can be concerned about 'toxins' and limit them in some places where it's easy and convenient. After all, I think we're all into ease and convenience at heart lol
Really Though How? The chemicals in haircare products literally absorb through your scalp. There’s a reason why so many hairdressers (especially those expecting) refuse to do color work - it’s incredibly hazardous to your health.
This entire video made me feel so anxious and I felt like I was being preached to. Like an entire manic episode rather than a bedtime skincare routine.
Actually that's not quite true. Every moisturizing cream has oil as well as water in it. So if you use oil on damp skin then it can emulsify and it can be absorbed quite nicely. But it is true if you use it on dry skin it will just sit on top.

@Alondra Torres One absolutely CAN know whats better for their own skin and body-particularly when most physicians are given the majority of their training in Western medicine of “treat the symptoms” and not the root cause of disease. Those doctors are given very little training on nutrition (a proven cornerstone of good health), much less natural/complimentary therapies that could be utilized before turning to pharmaceuticals that always have side effects. No, I am not an anti vaxxer btw. I am a firm believer that medicine has its place; as in for serious issues (including a pandemic). However, most negative outcomes in health can be avoided by proper diet and exceecise (the things many people don’t seem to want to do). And, granted, many people don’t want to do extensive research like I have, but there are plenty of herbs that are healing and safe. Some are not and natural doesn’t automatically=safe and thats why its important to research and also seek the advice of an integrated medical practitioner. But to say your average doctor knows everything is severely limiting belief at best and dangerous to your health and takes the power for your health out of your own hands. There is documented healing of all kinds of diseases simply through diet, exercise and herbal medicine. Don’t underestimate it-or yourself.
I do not want to sound mean, but I have tried almost everything from this line and I felt it was too overpriced and I haven’t really see any results. The mask Olivia mentioned did not feel moisturizing and just sat on top of the skin without doing anything. Face wash nothing special, and on my opinion it did not smell as great as Olivia described, it also would stain your eyes if it go near your eye area, so I was surprised she was be able to use it the way she did. I also tried serums from both their lines and for 140$ I did not feel it performed as some other brands do. Sorry for such negative review but this brand did not worth the money on my opinion.
Ironically, while Olivia is babbling about things smelling like “chemicals”, most actual bio cosmetics smell crap because they don’t have fragrance added. The more you know...

Oil has no moisture (it doesn't even mix with water). How can it possibly hydrate? If you put it on top of moisturizer then it seals moisture in but everything you apply after oil it will not reach your skin. What's the point?
Litearly every person in this series they are promoting some brand like there is not a single person who is telling real routine or mixture of different products.
I am a med-student. So, when in pregnancy, the woman is in a natural immunological depression state and she needs to avoid any pathogen which can be virus or bacteria to not transmit to the undeveloped fetus. And about the oils: oils do not absorb or hydrate the skin, instead water based solutions do. The oil gives just a sealing effect, and therefore has to be applied as the last in a skin routine.
Fragrance is by no means toxic: it simply does not fit that definition. It does indeed carry one of the highest irritation and allergy risks of almost all cosmetic ingredients though.
I know it’s just a compliment but it’s kinda sad how it’s such a common compliment when people look good without applying cosmetics to themselves like that has become the normal standard instead of our « natural » faces
She sprays water after putting a ton of oils... like... the water based stuff is not going to penetrate. And the things you can’t put on your face when you’re pregnant ate toxic to the baby’s formation, not to you. There’s nothing wrong with retinol when you’re not pregnant, but that’s a big no no when you’re growing a “parasite”. But I do like her approach on sustainability and I totally agree we should try to be less wasteful in our routines!
The fragrance in these products + the fact that she didn’t properly remove her makeup are way worse than any “crazy chemicals” in dermatologist-recommended products

As a dental hygienist I can tell you that learning your holy grail oral hygiene routine from Seinfeld is most likely going to steer you wrong. Additionally what she was doing is kind of the opposite of what you are supposed to do (use a 45 degree angle with bristles toward the gum line and use tiny circular motions). I have never heard of what she was describing. Finally, as much as I have tried to go all natural myself, those bamboo toothbrushes typically (not always, but typically) have hollow bristles that harbor way more bacteria than synthetic toothbrushes do. And finally, the bristles are also typically not contoured to the teeth and gums the way other toothbrushes are and tend to miss more. Maybe she's doing fine and her teeth are perfect. But just thought I'd throw that out there for anyone who thought about doing what she's doing. ✌🏼
Her teeth are perfect from the money she makes from this fear mongering. She can definitely afford to go to a cosmetic dentist with all the idiots who will believe someone like her over a dermatologist and buy her products
Idk why everyone is mad at people for their routines. Maybe she is truly passionate about sustainability and that’s why she likes this brand. Most brands are not even sustainable in their packaging. I think that’s a valid concern.
A lot of naturally sourced ingredients are not sustainable though. Essential oils and extracts are incredibly wasteful, and use a ton of water and plant matter to produce a miniscule amount.
I dunno. Bella Thorne literally put sugar and lemon on her face and scrubbed so hard I could feel it through the screen. At least Olivia used an actual face cleanser and moisturizer.

Wait, do oils actually penetrate your skin? They are occlusive and emollients but do not hydrate the skin. Anything you put on after an oil does not penetrate the skin. :/
Eileen Stapleton oils are oil soluable. Our cell membranes have a phospho bilipid bilayer. It’s potentially soluable. That’s how our skin makes oil in the first place.
they penetrate the first upper layers of the stratum corneum which is enough to make a difference so does paraffin oil but it's more occlusive and sterile
Does Harper’s Bazaar even vet these people or their “skincare routines” 🙄 Also, I’m tired of seeing people that use the entire line from one brand like whatever brand she’s using or freakin Barbara Sturm, or some other outrageously priced brand that many of us will never be able to afford. Despite every non-sense we have seen in this series, I like that we got something out of it: What NOT to do for your skincare, Susan Yara's series !!!, the Dermathologists react series!!, and people sharing REAL tips that actually work!!, we learnt that not everything expensive is better, every skin is different, and UNREALISTIC routines (like this one) are not the rule. I mean, it may work for her, because she's rich, she eats organic, has the means to pay for people to check on whatever thing goes wrong, doesn't eat whatever is cheap and easy to make (quick to get)... So yeah, but for the majority of us, this is just fun to watch and see these people trying so hard and still give us underwhelming content. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
yeah but she was using frosted glass(which isn't widely recycled) and plastic lids, pumps and tubes...the only thing good was about recycling clothes but other than that, she just sounds pretentious.

2:50 when a product smells good it means it has perfume in it, natural or not, which is not a good thing to put on your face bcz it may cause sensitivities. So if you use a product that smells very good, it just means that they used perfume to cover up the nasty smells of the other ingredients, it does NOT mean that these ingredients are natural. Because there is not one ingredient that naturally smells good in these formulations, it doesn't matter if it's natural or not. And that's why many companies that don't use perfumes have products that either don't smell so good, or don't smell like anything at all.
