Latry is the only performer I know of who plays the pedal line legato. This, together with tutti, is the only way to capture the spirit of the piece. People who say this is too heavy don't understand a thing, and are better off sticking to their Bach G major minuet.
Olivier Latry just must be one of the greatest assets to the present day organ world. Better still, he has recorded a trove of organ works for those who, like me, reside far from his own organ at Notre Dame de Paris (presently unplayable). I, for one, just cannot find even the slightest deviation from the perfect timing of each key press, regardless of how taxing a score might be. I think we all look forward to Notre Dame's return to public service. And we thank all that is holy that the grand organ wasn't destroyed.
@@noahdumais Yes of couse. I heard Cochereau several times at NDdP. His improvised postludes were astonishing. Alas, I did say "present day." Cochereau's untimely passing was a huge loss, but it gave us Latry. Most recently, my ears are longing for more Thomas Ospital (co-titulair @ St. Eustache. He follows the late, great Jean Guillou. Sadly, the St. Eustache organ has become so wind-leaky that it cannot make great recordings until repaired. When in better shape, it made marvelous recordings, I thought. Sadly, Thomas seems to have disappeared into the academic world for the time being.
I adore this piece played on the grand organ. But if I mentioned interpreting such pieces on the accordion you would most likely say I was mad and clueless. But give it a try. Go to 'Gilles Chevalier'. And there are numerous other artists of the accordion(especially in Russia) who play classical on what is normally called the bayan instrument. It maybe not your thing, but too often the bayan accordion is overlooked. It may not not have the power of the bass notes, but you can hear the harmony and melody more clearer. Whether you agree with me or not, I would love to receive your opinion.
Actually, surprising enough, yesterday my friend was practicing with his accordion and I wanted to test it- I played a few pieces including this one (+toccata), and it certainly fits to accordion ! There are videos I have seen, it isn't as stupid as it seems. And the structure of the accordion is the same as in an organ, so its not wrong.

Just given it a listen and I hear what you mean! The melody feels so much more light-footed and free. I think both versions are great performances and thanks for your reccomendation.
Is this from the same famous recording of the Toccata that's on RU-vid? I have been looking for the other parts for long! Do you have the Introduction and Prière a Notre Dame too?

en france a chaque fois qu on crée une pièce d orgue on dirait que ca été écrit pour les militaires, quelle arrogance ce son meme si c est beau hein mais c est un peu trop cavalier ca manque de subtilité. On aime faire du gros bruit insoutenable avec l orgue en France mais la vraie musique d orgue comme celle de Bach c'est bien plus fin et bien plus subtil, brillant sans pour autant être faiblard.
Saoulant ces commentaires « en France bla bla bla bla bla » … « la vraie musique d’orgue » …. Et … « l’arrogance » ….. clichés sur clichés …. C’est vous qui êtes arrogant avec votre Vérité qui n’est pas la mienne ! On se fou de votre petit avis, on veut juste apprécier une musique puissante produite par un instrument puissant ne vous en déplaise ! Écoutez du Bach vous avez raison c’est très beau AUSSI !
