This was SUPPOSED to be a short video, but ended up hitting around the 9 minute mark, so apologies for that! Since I'm new to content creation on RU-vid, I'm still trying to figure out a lot of my workflow to try and bring out consistent quality in all of my videos, but for now some things will turn out more polished than other things.
Rotary Encoders! Love 'em or hate 'em, there's no arguing that they can provide even more functionality to your keyboard! Whether its for basic macros or complex editing workflows, turning a knob will feel more natural for some use cases than a key press or mouse click.
Here are some places to get started with the QMK Firmware:
beta.docs.qmk.fm/
And here is the section specifically addressing rotary encoders:
beta.docs.qmk....
If you have any specific questions, let me know in the comments and I'll try to help you out as best as I can!

Small correction: In stead of removing the extra wide legs (as indicated at the 6:30 mark), consider squeezing each one together gently with a plier, so they fit into the hole. Given you push the rotary encoder also, and make twisting movements, you want all the mechanical stability you can get...

My idea is: Encoder in the Caps Lock key and change encoder function with Tab key (I dont use caps lock and tab keys in my daily). First function: volume. Second function: move on page. Is it possible? Can we push the encoder to change function? Thanks

Great video, could have gone into a bit more detail about the qmk changes that you have to make to get the encoder to work. I had to add `#define TAP_CODE_DELAY 10` in `config.h` in order for it to do volume control

Great video! Have you ever considered trying other typing layout like Colemak or Dvorak? I've been thinking about trying it out but I don't have a keyboard that I can do it with quite yet.
@thexxiskeyboards9361
@thexxiskeyboards9361 3 года назад
I've considered it, but since I game quite a bit, i haven't done it since most default game bindings are designed around the qwerty layout. I have noticed that a few games have a dvorak option in the settings now, so in the future it might be more feasible for gamers. I also don't really have any issues with ergonomics regarding qwerty, and I think the switch from a staggered keyboard to an ortho linear keyboard has made a more impactful difference in terms of strain on my wrists.
@lyingcat9022
@lyingcat9022 3 года назад
I’ve been rocking the Dvorak lately:) And I really like it. Still a little slower than Qwerty cuz I’m still mentally remapping. But I think it is more comfortable especially if you already use proper fingering while touch typing. And I can still mentally switch pretty quickly if I need to use Qwerty.

Is a special PCb required for the encoder or does is go in a normal switch slot?
@thexxiskeyboards9361
@thexxiskeyboards9361 3 года назад
The PCB that comes with the kit (on drop.com's website) supports a rotary encoder in 1 of 5 slots on the left hand side of the board.

Nive video but i think Unnesaasary you removed all keys and fitted again.question is my device has membrane keyoad .i figure out the matrix and pins connection there are two keys up and down.means i have total 2x2 equals four pin to fo up and down .i want to introduce this rotory switch instrad of these two key. As rotory switch has marks like clock ,ground,plus,DT,SW.i know it can be usedin Arduino too.but here the case is simple , one rotory encoder switch in place of two manual keypress switch .i just got my switch,not done anything eith switch yet can you suggest ant resolution please.

Can you press down on the encoder as if it were a key and have QMK recognize it as a separate input? Or can it just rotate?
@LuisAPeregrina
@LuisAPeregrina 3 года назад
yes, actually I didnt snip anything and soldered all the legs, just made sure that they are all straight. The PCB has the spots for the pins exactly placed, so it fits like a glove.

A bit of constructive feedback, it'd be really help to have more and closer shots of what the encoder pins and pcb slot look like and especially touch on how they fit together it seems that most videos really just kind of blow right past that and can't really see what you're doing.

Does this work on any keyboard? Or only the Plank? Or only VIA keyboards? I'm looking for a keyboard that I can map some rotaries to Photoshop's brush size and opacity, etc. Preferrably also the ability to click or tap some other button and somehow shuffle through different keybinds for that rotary so it can control multiple actions like pages. Any suggestions or advice?

I just kind of... soldered around the hotswap socket. I'm not sure if it was the technically correct way to do it, but i got enough solder on it to make solid contact between the pins and pads, and haven't had any issues regarding rigidity.

Can I just use the two pins on a hot swap board without soldering the other 3 pins to the board? I am thinking of using the push button function as a keycap and using the rotary movement as a fidget toy of sorts rather than have any rotary function in it.
@thexxiskeyboards9361
@thexxiskeyboards9361 3 года назад
I wouldn't know the case for all keyboards, but for all of the ones I've come across that support rotary encoders, none of them slot into hot swap sockets and must be soldered into place (the pins don't like up with Cherry MX switch pins) so you will have to solder the pins in place. This is why the planck only supports rotary encoders in certain locations on the PCB, as there are dedicated pinholes on the pcb for 5 pin rotary encoders. And yes, you could technically solder the switch into the socket and leave the rotary bindings blank. Aside from that I wouldn't recommend a rotary encoder as a switch replacement. mainly because the tactile experience of pressing down on a RE is rather subpar compared to a traditional keyswitch. there is basically no "key" travel and the actuation force is ridiculously high (it feels like 8-10 times harder to press down than a regular keyswitch.) instead for your use case I'd recommend placing a regular keyswitch in the hotswap socket and using something like the fidget spinner keycap by Hammer.

I want to buy a budget keyboard with rotary knob (no its not tm680 its a local budget gaming keyboard ) but if the rotary encoder breaks can i switch the rotary knob with other? And did it fit outemu socket if the extra legs removed or i have to make the steel pin smaller? And did it support hotswap?

What happens if you don't remove the two extra legs from the encoder?
@thexxiskeyboards9361
@thexxiskeyboards9361 3 года назад
If you don't remove the extra legs they end up blocking the encoder from sitting flush with the pcb (the 5 data pins on the encoder are meant to go all the way through the pcb holes). Oddly there are actually holes that line up with those extra legs, but the legs on my encoder were slightly larger than the holes on the pcb, so I had to remove the extra legs to get it to fit.

I don't have a gherkin in possession but i do not think it does. A PCB needs to specifically include slots for a rotary encoder. You will want to double check their product page just to be sure.
