Located in Finland, Olkiluoto 3 is one of the most expensive buildings in the whole world. Originally set out to be completed in 2009, the power plant is still not working to this day. In this video I try to decipher all the reasons behind this delay and find out how can a building go over 8 billion Euros over budget.
What started as a meme turned into my longest orignal documentary style project yet. Enjoy! :)

I wonder how many times people said "perkele" whilst around or in the building

Where I’m from there has been over 4 decades of attempts to build a 2nd power station complex, a complex of 4 reactors. It’s called Wylfa B.

If you include the planning, the earthwork prior to the start of actual construction, and the lawsuits, Olkiluoto unit 3 is slightly higher than 11 billion euro. Then again, thanks to this reactor’s monstrous 1600 MW net output, everything will be paid off much more quickly in comparison with other operators with newly commissioned reactors. As of right now, Vogtle unit 3 and 4 are possibly the most expensive buildings on this earth. This project ballooned past 30 billion USD earlier this year, which means that each AP-1000 reactor costs at least a staggering 15 billion USD…

We will see the electricity price. If only 50% of the time the price would be over the running cost, the construction cost will never be paid

@@nlousapt Sometimes the construction cost is paid whilst the plant is being constructed. However, this only happens when an operator has other reactors up and running. Sometimes, an operator could only pay off the construction cost after operating for more than a decade or so. The loans and the interests can only be paid off after a decade, which is one of the main reasons why the LCOE of nuclear is high. However, if a reactor’s operation is extended (60 years of operation or even more), then the LCOE of this reactor is much lower than almost all renewables except onshore wind.

The video didn't explain whether the Reactor Feedwater pump problem is being resolved. It will be resolved. Pumps are not new technology. I predict that this generating unit will be producing emission free non fossil fuel energy 60 years from today. The high cost and long construction time will be but a footnote in a few years.

When I was making this, it was still unclear how big of a problem the pumps would become. Latest news indicate that the problem has been mostly resolved and that full production will began in march. Couldn't agree more on the last note even if the video might sound a bit negative at times.

@@Finnstreams I don't intend to minimize the issue. Apparently, there is a common mode problem with all 4 pumps, but it appears spare parts are being used to somewhat correct the issue. These are obviously not stock pumps but custom. i believe in this day and age with computer designed impellers that the design margin may have been nibbled to the bone. I'll bet they've learned from this and the units being constructed in the UK will not have this problem. Good video.

Suprisingly the pumps "malfunctioned" when price of electricity in the Nordpool marketplace dropped near to zero.

@@Finnstreams too negative video, why are you counting the not produced electricity in the cost of the NPP? Looks like you are trying to make spectacular numbers.
