Oludeniz Paragliding: My First Flights

Here's an account of my first flights from Babadag mountain and the elation of finally getting there! As a flying site, Oludeniz has everything we could ever want with the addition of a safe place to practice acro and SIV. As a holiday spot for flying the weather is very good and accommodations very reasonable allowing longer stays (like my 2 weeks) obtainable without breaking the bank.
BTW, Holding risers was practiced throughout this video, please abstain from educating me on that topic. I have since abolished the practice after doing extensive research on the topic! In other words, it's a bad habit...like driving without a seatbelt.
Thanks to Pajafilm / @pajafilm for the use of extra gondola footage, Tonoz Beach Hotel for re-booking and re-arranging to get me in for 14 days, and to the people of Oludeniz generally for the wonderful food and service!
Music by me!

Its amazing to see how far it has come since my visits in 98 and 99 to help set up the tandem industry there with Gustav Van Vuuren at Altitude Action. Gondola? Hell! We drove a minimum of an hour up the dusty dirt road in pick up trucks. First transport left at 05h30. At takeoff by 06h30, rig and get down with only just enough time to make it to the next transport at 07h30. Full speedbar, spirals and big ears were the order of the day. 7 rotations made for a VERY long day. These days, I spend my summers in neighboring Georgia, flying tourists at some astoundingly beautiful spots. Happy Landings.

@@sduru because of that hour long ride, it was a long day with a maximum of 7 flights, if you were on the 05h30 transport. A lovely smooth flight was the reward for being up so early.

Nice starts off launch and lovely light (and shadow on 1700!) so early in the morning. We were still at our breakfast SIV briefing that time of day. And those clouds, I did watch a few tandems fly straight into them, another reason to keep some clear distance away!

That was brilliant! Thank you for sharing Sandra. If you don't mind me asking are you a more mature lady? You are definitely very active and fit and so brave. I am hoping to take up PPG this spring, watching your videos is giving me ideas of maybe trying paragliding with my BGD Wasp wing I purchased! It's one thing watching others do it on YT and another to actually be brave enough to have a go!
@freshnelly
@freshnelly Год назад
Hi, thanks! Yes I am 62 (nearly) and wish I had discovered PG years ago! BGD Wasp? Free flying would be fine but be careful in strong thermal conditions as that is a B wing ;) IMHO PG compared to PPG is a piece of cake, just opposite conditions i.e. PPG at morning or dusk when thermals are least, vs. PG during the day when thermals are best. All the best from one geezer to another ;)

@barrywebber100 Год назад
@@freshnelly Thanks for your reply Sandra. The Wasp is a "low" B I have read with a lot of overlap with an A wing. I'm hoping to have proper paid for training this spring and the trainer is a vendor for BGD wings and will be able to check over my wing for suitability. I believe it is rated stable and very safe. I admire your flying journey very much, I think you are marvellous.

I was at Oludeniz last year in July it was bloody hot, but just a great place to be. Also managed some flying near Antalya and a flight from mt tahalia which was 2450 m over the sea, but expensive to take the Gondola. at times the tandem guys were less than polite, so I was not in a hurry and just stayed out of the way. Love the Turkish people and culture and awesome food particularly if you got away from the tourist areas. It is a place to remember and would love to return. Let me know if you ever come to Australia.
@sandrainthesky1011
@sandrainthesky1011 Год назад
Oh yes July is way too hot! I'm going again in September, might look into that Antalya site, never knew it existed. Maybe the extra 500m makes it more costly (lol) Cheers down in Aussie from Canada

@@sandrainthesky1011Flying at Mt Tahalia you need to be pg5 and they check. There are some other sites inland to Antalya to check with the local schools. Also a nice coastal site pg2 on at Alanya about 2hr further up the coast.

That launch has changed alot since I was there, or is it a different launch? There was just a half built loo, and a large pile of rocks to poo behind. Don't hold your risers (unless you are rear riser steering), you can't be flying actively if you are holding the risers. Those were very nicely timed wingovers.

Flying over water is definitely NOT safer than over land. The only way that this is true, is when you wear an automatic rescue swim vest and there is a boat that is just waiting for you to touch down in the water. Otherwise, you can easily drown completely entangled in your ropes, while your protector is pushing you under water and your wing is getting pulled out in the open water. Water is extremely dangerous for paragliders! My flight instructor once said: If you have to decide if you are going to land in a tree or in a lake/river/ocean, always take the tree!
