In the western part of the Peloponnese since the dawn of ancient Greek civilization, Olympia, the most famous sanctuary dedicated to the worship of Zeus, arose and expanded. Olympia became the most important Pan-Hellenic religious, political and sporting center of ancient Greece. Through the Pan-Hellenic Games held every four years during 776 BCE - 393 CE, forerunner of the modern Olympic Games, Olympia was the setting for the ideals of humanity, peace, noble rivalry and sports fair play.
The video, with details in the subtitles, gives you a summary of the main constructions and the role they play. The Olympia sanctuary was divided into two physically separate areas. The central, sacred part, called the Altis, contained only temples, altars and memorials, and the lateral, profane areas, had sports and administrative facilities.
Among the buildings in Altis, the sacred area, the following are presented or mentioned: Temple of Zeus (with the famous Statue of Zeus, one of the 7 wonders of antiquity), Philippeion (memorial monument), Altar of Zeus (place of the animal sacrifices) , the awarding platform of the athletes,, the Pelopion (tomb of Pelops and place of animal sacrifices), the Temple of Hera (wife of Zeus), the Altar of Hera (where the modern Olympic flame-lighting festivities take place), the Nymphaeum ("House of the Nymphs" or "Water Goddesses", the drinking water supply system), Treasures of Olympia (tiny temples used to store valuable offerings), Metroom Temple (dedicated to the Mother Goddess of the Gods), Zanes (bases of bronze statues of Zeus, made from fines levied on athletes who tried to cheat),
and among those dedicated to sports: Gymnasium (running training, pentathlon, but also socializing), Palaestra (wrestling and jumping training), Phidias' workshop (where the Statue of Zeus was built), Leonidaion (accommodation for athletes), Bouleuterion (Council House), the building erected in honor of the couple of pharaohs Ptolemy II and Arsinoe II, Echo Stoa (Echo Colonnade, separates the sacred area from the stadium), Stadium (the stadium, with the great entrance way Kryto Stoa - Hidden Colonnade), the hippodrome.
