Beautiful gymnast. Anyone who calls her un-artistic is blind. Perfect shoulder and neck line, great flexibility and range of motion and expressive and engaging dance/choreography that goes very well with the music. Her form isn't perfect but in 1988 no ones was bar like 2 people (and certainly not Silivas). Innovative and difficult acrobatics too. She really had it all...

Elena was the perfect blend of artistry and power. I wish they'd bring back the compulsories. It would really help weed out a lot of the gymnasts

Thumbs up to Shushunova for being the oldest AA champion in modern gymnastics history. And also for being able to dominate for such a long time during the golden age of gymnastics!

Some of her skills left me with my mouth hanging open, great gymnast indeed. She won, by a narrow margin, but she won. IMO the Shushunova-Silivas "duel" in the Seoul 1988 AA competition is one of the greatest in the history of sport.

i loved Elena for her grace and artistry. my fav female gymnast. i wish todays ladies would combine some more grace with power and moves.

BRAVO ELENA SHUSHUNOVA. I think SHUSHUNOVA and SILIVAS are EQUAL. They are like FIRE [SHUSHUNOVA] and WATER [SILIVAS]. Shushunova the Tumbler and Silivas the Choreographer. Both are very good and both are great. Shushunova was the ALL-AROUND CHAMPION but SILIVAS GOT THREE GOLDS. I believe they brought out the best out of each other.

She certainly deserved that damn GOLD ALL-AROUND medal!!! She has all the top titles, a great gymnast is supposed to have. Let others have 3 Olympic gold medals, but they are not Olympic All-Around. champions.

there’s something i love about the first tumbling pass. the kind of delayed single layout. it’s simple but it looks so good. i also love when the do it on bars dismounts. like the first flip is piked and then it flares out into layout position. looks so cool 😍😍😍

I remember the 88 Olympics, I fell in love with Elena when I saw her performing the skill at 04:26… later I find out it was called as “rulfova” skill. But for me that move will always be a Shushunova move. Elena was really a great gymnast and a joy to watch. RIP ❤️

I see her and see Simon Biles and realized that Biles is impressive only by her difficulty and nothing else, while you can see Shushunova at her era was not just a gymnast with a lot of difficulty, you realized to the intention of being the cleanest possible in the execution, she was a different gymnast, she did crazy elements for the 80's but that didn't mean she lost the expression in her artistry, we could see in her balance beam and floor, the movement of her arms has flow, the choreography of the floor make sense with the tsiganskaya a gypsy folk music, you can see it in her bars her feet trying to be stretching to the maximum most of the time, she was a full package, she was all the essence of the artistic gymnastics, RIP Yelena Shushunova, your legacy remain with us By the way her routine to Tsiganskaya reminds me a lot of Natalia Godunko an ukrainian rhythmic gymnast who used that music too but for ribbon in 2008, but of them are very fast, confident, very different gymnast for their eras, but their routines made sense to the music.

So crazy that the Soviets threw full difficulty in team comp and were able to water down in the All Around. And still meet the code and have choreography like Elena. So good.

I wish they would bring back compulsory routines!! I miss this gymnastics!

Jesus Christ... Does anyone here know how they call Elena´s move on her floor exercise at 6:06? Was such a move executed by any other gymnasts? Seems diabollically difficult, but, well..it was Elena.

Oh yes, there were various: Elena Shushunova did in practice. Aleftina Priakhina at the 1987 Europeans - she really did it quite perfect then, I think the first one to perform it in an official competition but not named after her as it were 'only' Europeans. Even Boginskaya (!) performed it at an USSR display in 1987. The one I actually liked best was Tatiana Groshkova in 1989 (Chunichi Cup) and 1990 (Europeans, Moscow News, ...) as she throwed it as double full-in which really looked stunning!

I think they must have cruelly penalised her for a slight loss of balance turning at the end of the first length and dipping her chest on landing. However they didn't deduct for her legs apart in the air and on landing on her vault so hey ho. She was good wasn't she.

Its a thomas salto.... which is a 1 1/2 twisting 1 1/2 somersault in straddle position... It killed Elena Mukhina, and that happened 9 years before this.... The poor girl had to live in a wheelchair until she died two years ago....So i dont enjoy seeing it performed even as beautifully as Elena does it because I just think of poor mukhina.

Totally agree.......I hate the new rules and scoring of Gymnastics today. Too many of today's gymnasts could never compete with the ones' from 20-30 years ago.

Some say Shushunova should not have won the all around title over Silivas. I liked Silivas mainly, because she reminded me so much of Nadia and I love watching Nadia.

@bbhouk1 And the double twisting double is named the "Silivas" because she was the first to do it in a major competition-at the 1988 Olympic Games.

@emmyjo720 sillivas had a DOUBLE-TWISTING DOUBLE-BACK! IN 1988!! I didn't even know anyone did double-doubles until the 2000's i hadn't heard of anyone doing them until Shawn Johnson and Sam Peszek. please reply did you really mean to say double-double!!??

Si mal no veo en el suelo hace un Thomas Salto babeado de la gimnasia artística femenina. Y por el cual Elena Muckhina quedó cuádriplegica muriendo posteriormente de complicaciones de su invalidez. Ejercicios arriesgados solo por el medio punto extra. Me gusta más Silivas era más elegante.

Ah… another Soviet purchased gold medal. She was a fabulous gymnast but this competition should have ended in a tie. There was blatant bias all the way to the end of the Unified team. Thank goodness that era is long gone.

No, I haven't. I have read many commenters that did not like Elena's gymnastics very much at all. Common adjectives used to describe her: manly, un-artistic, choppy. I think 1988 was a good year for her, but I can never like her gymnastics very much, especially when there were girls like Silivas and Dobre around at the time.

The timing of the roll is very hard, but a stratalled arabian(what she did in the air) isn't, people do standing arabians on the beam all the time.
