Rest in peace Robert Conrad my childhood hero and idol still to this day You will be truly missed and never forgotten. There will never ever be another Robert Conrad you were the real deal a true tough guy. Robert Conrad was not afraid of anyone no matter how big they were. God speed to your family.
I was a big fan of Conrad starting with Hawaiin Eye but something kind of turned me off: it was his 2002 DUI. He almost killed himself and the person driving the other car. As a result of the accident the other driver eventually committed suicide and Conrad destroyed himself physically and lost his marriage. In court he claimed he couldn't recall what happened. I think he was 2x over the legal limit. I just lost respect for him at that point as he seemed to not take full responsibility for what he did.
I enjoyed conrad, but he was always playing up the tough guy persona even just in interviews.... gifford was one smooth cat considering he wasnt a professional actor but came out of the sports world. in the real world, it was gifford who was the real tough dude. he played in an era when the nfl was brutal smashmouth. that shot he took from bednarick literally almost killed him.... you can tell in this interview gifford was a real tough guy b/c of how relaxed he is.
Conrad was his own stunt man, he got thrown through about everything. He once was on a set up on the 2nd floor landing and jumped down and grabbed a chandelier to swing down but slipped off of it and landed on his neck and that segment of the episode was used, you can watch it, he spent a week in the hospital. He would grapple with anyone including his co-star Ross Martin on WWW and some of their punches landed good in the early days when they were doing their own stunt scenes and they didn't like each other. He has some legendary stories along the lines of an Ollie Reed. Both of them liked to drink and raise hell.
In a sense, you're right. Robert Conrad wasn't really like that. He was resolute and definitely tough, but he was not the "obnoxiously macho alpha male" people thought. Mr. Conrad was sweet and kind.
right, Conrad's ego got the best of him. Had it been a 40 yard dash Bob might've won but in a long race like this Conrad's short legs were no match for Kaplan who was over six foot tall
