Another one I filmed before the lockdown, more than 2 months ago. After 2 months of lockdown, the cases of new Covid infections in Malaysia is actually going up. At this rate, I will probably only be able to go out in 3087.

Are vaccination rates low? Is it the problem? USA is wide open with everything open and has been so since May 15 (most states)

I feel you. I have family (my in-laws) in KL, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor. They cannot visit each other. Or if they do they face huge fines. Plus the fear mongering to get vaccinated is really on another level now. Funny though that there seems to be a "religion bias" when it comes to who (based on reace & religion) gets which vaccine ... that sounds terrible and sadly reminds you immediatly of what happened in germany in 1930s/1940s ...

Great video one more time Robin, Congrats! I do have the E-M5 and I'm a professional photographer. It's an amazing camera that covers 90% of my works. Only for some particular dark places like churches (large group pictures...) or not well lighted night events I take my Canon 5D Mark III. But for the rest of the work M5 is a dream to me. So light equipment and with gorgeous lenses. As you says is more than sufficient for my work :)

I had to choose between the E-M1 Mark III & the E-M5 Mark III last August. I ended up going with the E-M1 because of the ergonomics and the handheld hi-res shot.

I think you could still use the E-M5 mark III as a webcam, as it has an HDMI output, just not with Olympus webcam software, but with something like elgato camlink? Is this correct?
@MrMichaelMeissner
@MrMichaelMeissner 3 года назад
Yes I believe so. You have to set the mode to HDMI Record mode. You can only put out 1080p video, not 4K or C4K (page 146). Unlike normal video record on the Olympus cameras, HDMI record mode does not have a 30 minute time limit (other than the battery). Of course if you are going to be using the camera for some time as a web camera, you will need to use a dummy battery and externally power the camera.

I have had the EM5 Mark III for about a year now. I have recently started using a tripod and also Peak Design Capture clip which I love. I have lived using the camera but the base has cracks around the tripod screw hole and a small chunk has now broken off. Apparently this is a common issue and now means I can no longer mount on a tripod. Wish I had the Em1 with the metal body...

Hi, Robin - I am one of your many thousands of giant fans - THANKS for this video! I am now looking into either of these cameras just to get better autofocus and battery life than my otherwise wonderful M5 Mark II. My biggest question is compatibilty with flashes and lenses I already have for real estate shooting. ALL of my equipment is matched to the M5 Mark II - everything from flashes and remote triggers, to microphones. My main lenses I know will will work (favorite is the 7-14 M Zuiko Pro tele, by far), but I'm worried about my Godox flashes and other stuff. Do you think staying with M5 (moving to M3) line is wise, or can I use the M1 Mark II (I prefer mainly because of great battery life) with my stuff? YOU are the BEST!!!

I switched from the EM5mkii to the EM1mkii and have never looked back. The EM1ii feels like it's part of my hand... I never feel like it's an anchor and the minimal gains that the EM5iii have, does not interest me. I expect the EM1ii to be with me for a lot of years as it is one of the most well built cameras out there.

very useful comparison, thanks! I'm using em1mkII since a few months now, and I'm pretty happy with it. For my use - reportage of long bike trails- the light weight of EM5 would be great, but the more customization of EM1 are even better. Also, the grip allows me to shoot while riding, which would be almost impossible on the EM5

Due to migraines, I have to wear polarized sunglasses all of the time when I'm outdoors in daylight. In this case, the E-m5 mark III has a significant advantage over the E-m1 mark II (and mark III as well). The E-m5 mark III has an OLED viewfinder which has no distortions when you view it through polarized sunglasses. The E-m1 series (and E-m5 mark I/II) use a TFT LCD display that has distortions when you shoot in landscape (horizontal) orientation and use polarized sunglasses. In most of the cameras with a TFT LCD viewfinder, I find the distortion is of the form of horizontal bands, where one band is clear, and the next band is distorted. The E-m5 mark II is different in that it is completely opaque. I find that on cameras with the bands of distortion, I can select a single focus point that is in the area that is not distorted and be able to shoot. However, I would not be able to manually focus the camera while using the sunglasses. I do find the color rendition of TFT LCD viewfinders to be more 'natural', and that OLED viewfinders tend to be a little supersaturated. I've learned over time to just mentally tone down the saturation to get a better idea of what the image will look like (and if I did like that supersaturation, raise the levels in post processing). But OLED displays do tend to display true black better than TFT LCD. The TFT LCD viewfinders do refresh faster than most OLED viewfinders, which is presumably the reason Olympus has stuck with these viewfinders for the higher end cameras. The Panasonic G9 has an OLED viewfinder that refreshes as fast as the Olympus TFT LCD viewfinders, but Olympus hasn't used it yet. IIRC, OLED displays tend to consume more power than TFT LCD displays. The power level tends to be more consistent no matter whether the scene is dark or light, while TFT LCD displays tend to use a variable amount of power, depending on the brightness of the display. In terms of computer monitors, TFT monitors tend to last longer than OLED. In particular towards the end of its lifetime, OLED displays start losing color fidelity, particularly the blue color (so monitors will boost the blue signal based on how much the monitor has been used). I'm not sure it matters as much for photographers. Most users probably don't use the camera as much for the viewfinder display to start failing. The pros and advanced amateurs that do spend consider time taking pictures each day tend to upgrade their camera gear every few years. I find the USB charging to be not that useful. You have to turn off the camera to charge the battery. If you never need to change your battery during the day, it is useful for traveling because you don't have to bring a separate charger. What I want is the ability that the E-m1 mark III has to be able to run a camera on a USB C-PD battery. The E-m1 mark II can also use a battery grip (HLD-9) that adds a second battery and it also has a port for external power. This can become an issue if you are using the camera for a long time, and changing the batteries can be problematic (if the camera is on a jig, or you are doing lots and lots of video on a tripod). For vlogging, one thing that is missing on the E-m5 mark III is a headphone jack. I did a video shoot in 2019, and I lost the first few minutes of sound because the microphone wasn't properly plugged in. I didn't notice as I was recording without a headset. That being said, I own an E-m5 mark III, but I've been thinking on adding an E-m1 mark II for the times it would be more useful.

Great 'versus' video. I already have the EM5 MK2, which more than suffices as a casual camera (especially when paired with the 12-40mm PRO lens - which practically lives on the camera permanently!). They're getting harder to get hold of now, but I really hope I can get hold of an EM1 MK2 asap before they're discontinued - that's always been my goal, to have the EM1 MK2 as my professional camera body. I really do not need any more than what it will deliver. But, Robin - where can I get the same lanyard you have there on your EM1 ?

I ordered the E-M5 III when it came out with the grip. I really did like it, although the plastic body was a bit of a disappointment, even though the build quality seemed excellent. I just undermines the vintage look and feel of it. Still, I was happy with it, but right after I got it the E-M1 II came down in price to only $100 more body only. Except, I didn't have a body only E-M5 III, I also had the grip, which was an additional $170! So, my E-M5 III was actually $70 more than the E-M1 II! I liked the E-M5 III so I really had to think about it, but the E-M1 II was metal, had the OM Log video profile, and a much bigger battery that I didn't have to unscrew a grip to change. The real kicker was that the plastic E-M5 III really isn't that much lighter than the metal E-M1 II, especially with the grip. So, I took it back to B&H (one of the many benefits of living in NYC) and I exchanged it for the E-M1 II, plus an extra battery, memory card, and a little bit going back to my bank account. I do wish it was better looking though. It's just aesthetics, the handling and control are fantastic, but it's not as engaging to walk around with a boring looking tool of a camera. I know it's stupid, but it doesn't call out to you the way my original OMD and EP-5 did. The EP 7 is basically a more expensive version of the E-M10 IV, but without a viewfinder, and also plastic! They're basically making the same mistake that they did with the E-M5 III. Not surprising that it's a holdover from when Olympus ran things, given the direction they've been going. I hope JIP can restore Olympus cameras back to beautiful metal bodies. I think an EM-1 level camera that was modeled to look more like the E-M5 with the grip as one solid unit would go over very well, and would look "professional" enough in black. The vintage look doesn't seem to be hurting Fuji!

I have the em5ii, that I use with a third party grip, and the em1ii. For photowalks and if I want to keep it small, I take the em5 with one of the premium Oly prime lenses. If I want more flexibility I take the em1 with the 12-40 pro. This lens never leaves the camera. On the whole the em1 has better ergonomics but is a little more conspicious. They are both fantastic camera’s and there is very little difference in image quality. Battery life on the em5 is disappointing though.

@buddha01meister

I also upgraded recently from the E-M10 Mk. II to the E-M1 Mk. II and love both. To the E-M10 Mk. II I added a grip because the body grip was to small to keep larger lenses stable. With the E-M1 mk. II I bought the HLD-9 battery grip to have more power and acting as a counter weight to my 100-400mm and my Delemax 650-1300mm manual tele lenses. I was stunned by the performance rate of the C-AF on the E-M1 in comparison to the E-M10. It is so much faster. Another feature I like on the E-M1 Mk.II is the full weather sealing. As an Aviation photographer ( airplane spotter) the weather sealing is actually a must have. Don't get me wrong I also love the E-M10 Mk. II. it is lightweight, does what it must do and is a easy travel camera with a 14-150mm lens attached to it. Basicly, the E-m10 Mk.II is married to the 14-150mm and my E-M1 Mk. II is married to the 100-400mm. Only backdraft I could find on the E-M1 Mk. II is the lack of a pop-up flash. Means that I can't use it with an external flash at certain times (like at some venues in India, since they regard an external flash as "professional"). Means I need to use the E-M10 Mk.II then. Same thing goes for tele zoom lenses like the 75-300mm and 100-400mm. Basicly any tele zoom lens bigger then 14-150/40-150mm is considered "professional" in most tourist venues like the Rajastan Heritage Village.

I own em1m2 as a backup/second camera to my canon r5. I love form factor of em1’2. I don’t like form factor of em5 due to lack of grip, my fingers start hurting pretty soon after using em5 and I would need an extra front grip just to overcome it, which defeats its purpose. Em1 much more comfortable. I also bought used em1x but sold it after couple of months- that was too bulky/uncomfortable and I did not find tracking autofocus on x was much better than em1m2 even after latest firmware. Thank you, Robin. Good advice. I have the E-M1 mk2 and my older E--M1 as my second body. I think the E-M1 mk2 is plenty compact and light that something even lighter and smaller, with the big lenses in my collection mounted (300mm f4, and 4/3 14-35 and 35-100 f2 with adapters), would be a challenge. I love the layout of the camera's controls and its sturdiness, and I fully trust it to do what I need every time.

I have both cameras also and I agree with you Robin. A few notes: - Why Olympus no Web Cam connection to EM5.3? It costs 1249 euro body only in Europe and not having a Web Cam connection is a big fault from Olympus. Especially when Em5.2 can do it. - Although EM1.2 and EM5.3 have same processor and sensor, I can see slight changes in the image. Comparing the Natural Profile I found EM1.2 to have a bit more saturated color a bit less contrast than the new Em5.3. Have you seen these small color differences Robin? Small but visible in 4k 99.99% sRGB screen. - Still laughing with your suggestion for FF trolls :D

I completely agree with you. This is a strange decision by Olympus. Of course, they can decide to reverse course at any time, since the EM 5.3 has the same processor as the EM 1.2. On top of that, it has the benefit of USB charging, which allows for long online sessions w/o changing batteries. For this past semester, some days I had to stay online teaching 6h straight (OK, 1h15' + 1h + 3h with 15' breaks in-between), using the Olympus Web Can app on Zoom. Last fall, I had used my Pen-F, because it somehow felt better suited, bu I kept forgetting to change the battery. In December, I bought a battery grip for the EM 1.2, and this was one of the best purchases I ever made: The battery grip has an AC input that allows me to run my EM 1.2 forever w/o draining the battery (it doesn't charge the batteries, though, as I found out). In the end, my Zoom setup is: EM 1.2 + battery grip with AC power + either Olympus 17mm f/1.7 or Pana-Leica 25mm f/1.4.

Before upgrading from my E-P3, I prefer EM5 for similar size and weight. But when I need a new camera, EM5 was still at its 16MP 2nd Gen. so I hv choose EM1 II for higher resolution and 4K. Once I use EM1 II it could never go back, the grip, battery life and dual card. Even not a pro user I could enjoy its much greater capability for traveling and event shooting. By the time EM5 Release its 3rd Gen, its not very attractive to me as I’m already so used to my EM1 II as a companion. If I would add a lighter camera for more relaxing use, I will prefer going back to Pen, and the recent E-P7 seams nice, looking forward to your own hands on of this new one!

I am very happy with it and don’t need the more robust (and heavier) em1 ii. I am hopeful that we might see a new sensor with higher MP in a new Olympus camera in the not too distant future.

Hi! Please tell me, can I put LOW ISO (64) in E-M5III when I record 4k video? Because the lowest iso in this mode is 200 but sometimes it's too much😞

Thank you for the positive video. The heaviness of choice still remained. In case of insufficient lighting, are their capabilities equal? I don't want to buy a full frame for one shoot. But I need to videotape the Northern Lights.

With all respect to your carefully weighted arguments and efforts that you put into this, I am still wondering whether separation between two cameras is so strong. I can imagine that more elaborated ergonomic features are important for weddings pro work, but for landscapes, something like em5iii plus 12-45f4 combo is sensibly ligther than em1ii plus 12-40 on longer hikes but can still produce practically the same image quality. The same applies for portrait or macro work, i feel even pros don't need pro lenses for every single work as premium zooms mostly have very comparable optics. so em5iii plus 45f1.8 fits in very small bags more easily on some occasions. I am just saying that em5iii shouldn't be fully excluded for some pro work even if em1ii is generally more fit for such arrangements.

Greetings from southern Indiana, USA! I had the EM5 m2 as a backup for the EM1 m2 that I also had. I liked the grip for better stability when holding the camera. I found a used on at the camera store for the EM5 m2. I finally decided that for travel purposes, it was better to replace the EM5 and upgrade to the EM1 M3, with the EM1 m2 becoming the backup. Advantage: batteries. Both EM1 cameras use the same batteries, so I could bring just one charger instead of two. And the backup batteries would fit either EM1 camera. If I found I went through the batteries faster, I would probably look into those chargers that allow you to charge two batteries at one time. In general, I've found just one extra battery is all I need for one day of shooting.

For me Pro Capture was a decision maker. The E-M5 Iii buffers only 14 frames and that’s too short for me shooting song birds, where I found 30 f/s to be the optimal rate. I don‘t know, but if the E-M5 III has live monitoring on the hdmi port, one may utilize an affordable usb capture adapter for webcam application. One thing I am missing on the E-M1 II is Bluetooth for easier connection to my smartphone.

Thanks Robin - I have the EM-1-II and the 12-100 zoom. Wonderful one camera/one lens option. Even as the Nikon Z50 gets much of my love recently with the Tamron 18-400 zoom, The Oly kit remains my favorite for event & inside work. I hope new products come out soon from them so we know the new company is in it for the long haul.

I'm not a pro by any stretch of the imagination, but I do love the Olympus Pro series lenses. While the 12-45/4 balances well on the E-M5 III, the other Pro lenses are a bit unbalanced without the add on grip. Turns out with the grip attached I can't change my little Pez sized batteries, and, this is a big one, with the grip, The E-M5 III is only 39gm lighter than the E-M1 II. So I guess if you're ok with the little kit zooms and the f1.8 primes, the E-M5 is a good fit, but otherwise, personally, the trade off just isn't worth it. YMMV

Hey Robin, been watching your videos for quite a while and I’ve always wondered what wrist strap you use on you EM1 MK2? By the way I love your videos and you inspired me to keep doing photography with my OMD, you showed me how incredible the OMD system is and just how much it’s capable of and because of that I’m now on my second OMD body an EM5 MK2 and I love it. I’d definitely choose the EM1 MK2, that hand grip is so comfortable

Hi! I have an Olympus EM-1 (the original). I use it primarily underwater. I am looking at an update. How much better are the newest generation cameras than the original Em1? will the EM10 still offer better autofocus etc. than what I have now? or will I be disappointed after using the EM1? I am pretty happy with the EM1, but would like better autofocus for challenging macro subjects.

I have an E-M1 II since last november. It could be my best camera ever, if the AF won't be absolute unreliable. Even in good light conditions, many-many times it's only "almost there"... I had much better keep ratio with the E-M10 II I used for five years. On the other hand, the MF peaking is great, so I use the lens ring when have time to get the image sharp manually. ... I'm very curious, is the E-M5 III better in AF-ing or not?

Yet another great, upbeat video. Good analysis, detailed enough to back up your suggestions but not too long. The differences do push these cameras into different markets in a holistic way, all working together rather than making for tough choices. The similarities mean that neither one would be a "bad" choice even if it was not optimal. Their bottom line imaging being the same, you cannot go wrong where it counts. Thanks.

I chose EM1 II over EM5 III and I am no more than a keen amateur. I came from EM5 I and was heading to EM5 III. Given the closeness in pricing I had to consider also the EM1 II and the way better handling on the EM1 II combined with battery life sealed it for me. BTW also got 12-40 Pro Lens which I think is a bit too heavy for the EM5. Certainly I am happy with my choice. The big pro Lens is a bigger factor on weight than the body - on a long hike I sometimes leave that behind and just carry my 9-18 lens which I love. Good summary though Robin - always love your Videos

I'm OK with the 12-40mm f/2.8 on the EM5 Mark iii and EM10 Mark ii but it's about at the size limit for me. I wouldn't go further. Luckily the wonderful 75mm f/1.8 is smaller than the 12-40mm f/2.8 and fits the smaller bodies wonderfully .

As of late 2022, EM5 Mark ii can still be obtained new at a discount with 2½ or 3 year warranty if you shop around in UK . EM1 Mark ii is discontinued so you might get a limited 6 month warranty from a dealer - but it's cheaper. I would say EM1ii is a better product but EM5iii is very attractive for its lightweight and compact form factor - a nice upgrade from an EM10 Mark ii for instance.

I think the only answer is to own both.😉 I do love the EM5iii though because if I want to keep it small and light I can, and if I want to use bigger lenses I can add the extra grip (which is actually really nicely made). And yes it is the best looking OMD of all time.😍 Almost as sexy as my OM-1.

Hi, I was forced to make the same decission at the end of 2019. My EM5 was stolen and I needed to buy a new camera. By the time I made my decision, there was another contender, the Panasonic G9. Slightly larger in hands, and the fact that it lacks phase-detection AF (I couldn't use my old 4/3 lenses on it if I wanted to) put me off this option, so the decision was between the two Olys. Same price point, and a slightly more capababilities for the EM1 MK II over EM5 MK III ( I only use continous shooting in a limited range of situations) , and its size is more balanced for 12-40mm 2.8 and 40-150 2.8, lenses I was in love with ( I remember beeing unconfortable using my old EM5 with 12-40mm 2.8 and much worst for 40-150mm). If the new 12-45mm and 40-150mm have been availabe at a lower price that the kit I ultimately bought, I am not sure what decission I would have made. I am very satisfied with my M1MkII but I miss HR handheld, and Live ND modes of the succesor MI MKIII. Best Regards

Here is a funny one for you Robin. Maybe you already answered this one... If the OM5 uses the same sensor, body, battery, whatever as the EM5 MKIII, but adding more tools with true pic IX, then I want a smartguy who would be able to cook an unofficial/Or Official update of the main engine.(One of the first reasons I liked four third cameras back then, was their update capacity... Recently, these updates were very...light to say the least.)Imagine one moment, that for, lets say, a hundred bucks, I could update my EM5 in OM5... WoW! And since in general, nobody will need to change his EM5 mk III for an OM5, anyway, it is not a loss for OM System. Quite the opposite in my opinion. So much that I would not be surprised to find this possibility in their business strategy to gain market shares. It would also explain AND EXCUSE the fact that the sensor in the OM5 is the same... What do you think
