Peter, I just set up my EM5 Mark iii with your settings which I thought were pretty spot on. This is an excellent, easy to follow video which made the menu system seem such more manageable. This is my 3rd EM5 camera. I learn something new with every upgrade. Thanks!

Thanks for this video. I just upgraded from the Mk II to the MkIII, I had the grip and the additional battery on the MK II. As a former Nikon DSLR owner, I think the grip on the native MK II camera was totally unacceptable. On the MK III, the grip is better but I will still get the additional grip.It really helps gets secure and stable images even with IS, Secondly, although most of my pictures are on-line, I appreciate all the information about settings as I do print photos from time to time and have wondered about better preparing images.
Great video Peter, One of these days I will have an OM-D and I will come back to check these settings. I am still shooting with my Old E-1, happy to hear the mk3 now has phase detect AF.

These types of videos are so helpful.I liked my EM-10 Mkiii Kit that I recently purchased as my first Olympus camera of any type and gave it to my daughter that has been using a Nikon D3100 for quite a few years now. I have a EM-5 Mkiii Body ordered in Silver and am really looking forward to it.It will go well with the 12-45mm f4 Pro.That is a really nice lens as well,and a great value. Hi Ed. Don’t worry about getting in over your head. You can always put it on auto. Sometimes I don’t feel like messing with settings on my cameras and that’s what I do. Rumors say that Olympus has what I would call a positive problem. The demand has been quite big and there will be some delays. Not so good for the customer.

So, yes... “Recall from custom menu” will get you C2 or C3. I think most people already know or get that but I was a little slow on the uptake. I’m a flawed photographer but trying hard and you help me out quite a bit let me just say.

Hello - I did something similar last year - Canon 60D/90D with 15-85 to the Olympus OM-D EM-5 Mk III. I've largely enjoyed the lower weight, the admiring looks from other people and the image quality has been as good or better than my old kit. The only issue I have had has been with Aviation Photography with the Olympus 75-300mm lens at a recent airshow which resulted in very few keepers. How has your experience been?
I just ordered the EM5 and have not had a Olympus since EM1 Mark1 so after using my G9 for over a year it’s going take a little while to get used to the Olympus menu system.
Hello Peter, yes I have preordered my OM-D Em5 mk3, I sold all my old Canon gear (50D, lots of lenses) And finally made the switch to Olympus and M4/3. I can’t wait to try it out. Mostly for fast indoor sport(judo), and travel. I bought it with the 14-150 kit lens and will probably add the 17f1.8 and 45f1.8 (to begin with...:-))

I purchased M5 Mark III 3 days ago, and its really nice upgrade from M10 (mark 1). Thanks for the tips, actually i got some of them. Few comments: 1. Peaking If using M.Zuiko 12-40 2,8 i use switch to manual focus on the focus ring, while L-FN button enables peaking. Magnify is bit confusing me. 2. Grid settings vs Leveling tool. I usually dont need help with composition, I simply can imagine the guiding lines - but of course its about personal preference. But got used (quite recently) to leveling tool on M10. You can switch to it in leveling tool when press "Info". 3. IS preference over FPS. I was used to film cameras, so i prefer single shots. Low speed shutter is ... some kind of future tech to me, so i really appreciate this tip. 4. Beeping sound M5 III offers different shutter modes - single, silent, antishock and sequential versions of all. I am used to beeping during normal occasions (tells me AF got locked), while "single" mode uses actual mechanical shutter (up to 1/8000 speed). Both things are helping me to get idea if the camera is focused and if the photo was taken (again a habit I carried from classic film cameras). "Silent mode" uses an electronic shutter (up to 1/32000) while on default it turns off beeping and AF luminance led in this mode. So i can quick access and switch between those modes as i need using button next to power lever. 5. Noise filter off/ Noise Reduction: Auto I am also used to take "standard" photos without any art filters. I really did not realized that Noise Filter is one of those, and yeah... can be done later. 6. Power on FN Lever I totally agree that its much more convenient. Even when I am used FN lever for switching between AF and MF, when using M.Zuiko 12-40 it can be done on lens dial. What i wish, whether there can be a different feature added to Power Lever instead. 7. EVF Auto switch There is an accessory for OMDs called EE-1. Its kinda expensive, and its an iron sight (a type of viewfinder mounted on horseshoe). Its used for high-speed photography, usually with high focal lenght. M5 (both II and III) can spare a lot of energy when both EVF and Display are off.
Very nice guidance! I saved the recommended configuration with raw and exposure to the right to custom mode C1 and use it often. A pity that the camera has 3 custom modes only, which is not enough for all my presets (outdoor, indoor, jpeg, motion with CAF). Hopefully the future firmware update will add C4, C5.

Hi Peter, Thank you for a very informative video. I have an OMD eM5 Mark III. Currently the lenses I have are: 9-18, 60mm macro, 14-150 kit and a 14-42 kit. I like to take land and seascapes and underwater photos. Before the current pandemic struck I was scheduled to take a trip to Africa for both diving and safari. That trip is now postponed until next year. I am looking to buy another lens (preferably a faster one that any I have currently). I am looking at the 8mm f/1.8 Fisheye PRO as well as the 17mm f1.8. Do you have any recommendations?
Fisheye is a very special lens. It very wide and can give some stunning results, but as I said it is very wide and not very good for general photography. The 17mm f1.8 lens is more for general shooting and it goes very well with the E-M5 MKIII. Not sure if there is a underwater case for E-M5 MKIII. At least not yet.
I’ve just unboxed my new M5 MarkIII with a 12-100 Pro. I came form the iPhone... and I am just amazed about what I have got... peaking, shadows live... I am shooting Raw+ JPEG and was wondering wether stay with the mute options you recomended or turn to natural. Any insight on this?

Thanks Peter. Very helpful but you did confuse me a bit. You said you typically set exposure by removing all red and then adding 1 stop. You then said lower exposures result in less noise. Not sure what you mean by "lower". Assume that would mean darker or reducing f-stop (e.g., going from f/4 to f/5)?
Hi Peter, Firstly, thank you so much for your informative videos dedicated to Olympus. I mainly shoot in A or M mode and was surprised when I got my Olympus to discover that in manual mode the EV value is adjusted automatically and you can’t change it. So it’s not really fully manual, right? Or maybe I’m missing something.
I can change the shutter speed and the F setting but the EV value adjusts automatically. I am trying to find a way to change the EV setting. Please excuse my inexperience on Olympus as on my other DSLR there is a button to stop down or up exposure compensation. Many thanks for any insights you may have.
That is for the reference for the exposure. With the settings I recommed it will give you better and more precise exposure for your raw-images. If you shoot raw I would use Natural.
It is hard to say. What lens you have? If your lens has the MF Clutch have you checked that it is not in MF mode? If not then check out the AF/MF settings from the menu.

Regarding 12:20 changing color value from default "SRGB" to "Adobe RGB" are you assuming I am using Adobe products? or does this give you enhanced color range even without owning Lightroom or photoshop etc.?
AdobeRGB has a wider color gamut that sRGB and if you edit your photos it is a better choice. After editing the image should be converted to sRGB for posting online. If you only shoot jpg and do not edit, then sRGB is a better choice.
Thanks for the numerous tips for my new E-M5iii. Somehow your last tip does not work. I can't change the grid settings in special menue I, because it is not active and I don't know how to activate it.
Grid settings is in special menu D3. It might be greyed out if you have some special features on. It is hard to say which one. I tried different things, but could not figure it out.
Coouple things I'm used to from my Pentax, but are not available in EM5III which I added recently :( Beeping only has on/off, it is not possible to select how loud it is. IBIS is great, but does not offer the functionality to level horizont. It is not possible to just turn both EVF and LCD off.
Thanks for your informing videos Peter. I just switched to M5 MarkIII from Nikon D5600 especially for the IBIS. I just recevied my m5 markiii. i am dealing with the settings now. But while i was shooting i can't hear the shutter sound (mechanical one) even if the camera is not on silent mode. I tried everything and i can't found it. If you know this issue i am very gratefull if you guide me. Thanks.
@@ForsgardPeter there is no problem with the images. May be I get used to Nikon's sound I expect the same from e-m5 mk3. All I wonder is this normal. I only hear an electronic like sound.
I don't know if you still monitor this as it is over one year since it was recorded. I have just recently upgraded my em10 mk2 to em5 mk3 and found your suggestions very useful. Thank You! However, I have one problem. I have set Custom 1 to Highlight/Shadows and it only works while using the LCD screen but not the EVF. It works on both on my old EM10 but I cannot fo the life of me find out why not on EM5. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Just a quick question. You mentioned that in picture mode I should set the 'muted' to saturation & contrast to -2. Should I be using 'muted' all the time, instead of 'natural' where I have it set at the moment. I do use RAW and lightroom. Thanks!

Hi, i am really considering this camera for vlog. Could you recomend a good vlog lense for this camera that is not to expensive? :) I am currently using the canon m50 but i feel this camera can be a push thinking of the stabilisation it can give, and also use the 4k :) Thanks for the video you are making, they are all great! Also, while on here: Can i use this camera at -10 celsius degrees without having to worry about the cold?:)
If you are looking for a budget-friendly zoom AF lens for your vlogging tasks, few lenses can beat the utility of M.Zuiko 9-18mm f/4.0-5.6. If you are fine with prime or work in low-light environment a lot, M.Zuiko 12mm f/2.0 might suit you better. Additionally the 9mm f/8 fisheye is also an interesting lens to consider, if you don't care that much about the fisheye effect that comes with it. Note that none of the previously mentioned three lenses are sealed against the elements though, so if you want to make the most out of EM-5 III's weatherproof abilities, it's safest to go with the more expensive and better protected PRO lenses.
I think funghiman covered the best options for vlogging. My experience with the 12mm f2.0 has been great. But as funghiman mentioned it is not weather proof. The E-M5 MKIII is great for vlogging. The AF with face priority works great and no need for gimbal. IBIS is so good.

If you are using my method for exposure, then yes. Other wise it is not that important. Use the one that gives you the best result. So you both use Olympus gear, nice. You have separate lenses or do you share?
@@ForsgardPeter we do use your method for exposure (we watched your video on exposure settings for the OM5 mark II and OM1 mark II and changed our settings to match yours at that time and noticed a remarkable difference. so the answer is to use "natural"? (i just checked the OMD1 and that is what he has, and i don't think it has changed since we watched that video). as far as lenses go, i have the 12-100 and the olympus macro, and he has everything else:-) his main lens is the 14-150. i "let" him borrow the macro, and he "lets" me borrow the wide angle lens. he also has a huge telephoto, but it is more than i can handle:-)
Then I would use the muted picture profile. The methid I am using will give a bit dull results what comes to contrast and saturation. The image needs post processed. Some minus for the exposure and adding contrast and saturation. The amount depends on what you like your images to look like.

Yes, I know. It is a bit different, but can be used almost similar way. This method with flag colors is very good. It can be adjust to match the exposure in Lr. But yes zebras are very handy too.
Peter, I wonder if there is a way to get the shutter to NOT fire if the image is not in focus when using an Olympus 17mm 1:1.8 non Pro lens...on my camera with AF limiter 'on' and Pri. Rls 'off' or 'on' ...makes no difference...the shutter will fire even when the image is totally out of focus. Thanks
If I have a vintage 50mm Konica lens from my old SLR film camera with an adapter for micro 4/3 so it can be used on my Mark III, what do I put in for the focal length? 50mm or 100mm?
If you have the right adapter it is. You set the focal length of 50mm as the focal length does not change. The angle of view is equivalent to 100mm in FF.
Peter, I am trying to use the hdmi cable output to record myself. I have some issues, Firstly it shows the battery icon and I can't get rid of it. Secondly it shows the focus bar area and thirdly my capture card says its only seeing HD. Can you help me with these as the camera is great for recording myself but I don't want to use the SD card whilst I am at my desk using it as a webcam.
There is no other way than you have done. To record straight to the computer you will need some software to record the screen. I use software called Snagit.
@@ForsgardPeter Peter thanks for your reply. So there is no way to remove the battery icon from the output? Or [ ] focus point? I assume you use snagit to crop the output to remove the icon? If all this is true its a bit of an epic failure from Olympus and makes the third party screens that record the output invalid.
Peter I have an update. It can only be done in movie mode and only if you set the recording to 1080p and the mode to screen recorder. Does not seem to be a way to do this in a photo mode. To me this is a firmware bug and an easy one to fix as you can remove everything else without being in movie mode. I will look to see if I can raise a support log. If you have connections with Olympus can you mention this as well please?

Do you still have EM5.3? I got one question regarding Manual mode in video. Is it possible to turn on AutoISO in manual video mode? There is E1 setting for exposure called ISO-Auto you can switch from PAS to All, but I'm not sure this also impacts Manual mode in video. Is it?
At the moment I do not have one. If I remember correctly it is not possible in movie mode, but if you have set AutoISO for all then it should be possible to use Auto ISO in M mode and all other modes.
@@ForsgardPeter Manual says it's not possible :(. This is kinda weird. Only EM1 Mark2 and EM1X got this option. All other brands got it in the cheapest models possible. For me it's deal breaker, so just bought different camera 10 minutes ago. Guess I have to wait for EM5mk4 or firmware update of mk3.
If you want the classical way. Use a wide angle lens, let say 17mm f1.8. Set the aperture to f4 and the focusing distance to about 3.5m to 4m. Everything from 1,7 meters to infinity will be sharp. So you do not have to focus at all. Then use Shutter priority mode and start capturing images.
Question for you as a connoisseur of Olympus please help 1. how to reschedule video recording at the moment the shutter is released? And the second question is how to remove the setting prompts for each item in the menu? everyone has freedom and covers the floor of the screen)

Hi, do you know why in the em5 mk iii every time I step from M mode to VIDEO mode the machine contains the same parameters? Example: if I'm on M and I have 1/125 f 4 ISO 400 and step on VIDEO I find the same parameters. Is there a way to keep them separate?

HELP!!! I set up my camera after accidentally doing a factory reset using these settings plus some other settings for bird photography and now I can’t access pro Or the Hi-Rez settings. When I go there, they are grayed out. I checked the settings and they are all checked. I don’t want to have to start all over again

Hello Peter. I have been watching your videos. I am a new Olympus user. I have the new em5 mark III. I have a couple of questions that I hope you can help me with. I would like to set my camera up to use back button focus; but, I don't want to use it all the time. I want to be able to easily hand my camera off to someone else to take a picture and NOT use the back button focus. What is your recommendation in this situation? I don't want to have to keep going back into the menu system to turn this on and off. My 2nd questions has to do with setting up the wi-fi to connect with your phone. I downloaded the OS share app but it won't connect to my phone. I am not sure if I am doing something wrong of if everyone is having difficulties with this issue. Any recommendations? Is anyone else having these issues? Thanks for your input!
You can store your settings to a Custom setting. If you choose C1 you can access it easily with the Mode Dial. Store different setting to C2. That can be accessed from the menu. I hope this helps and I understood your question correctly. I ran in to that same problem all the time with my E-M5 Mk I--explaining how to use BBF to a stranger just to take your picture is a hassle. One workaround is to switch the camera into green Auto mode. That overrides the BBF and reverts to auto-selected focus points (at least with my old E-M5). But this workaround is no good if you want a custom exposure setting, or a specific focus point.
@@ForsgardPeter I did take your advice and set up my camera with 3 separate custom menu settings. For #1 and #2 I set it to use BBF and for #3 I set to take it off of BBF so I don't have to go in and fuss with all the other settings. That seems to be working. Thank you!
You also need the EVF Auto Switch to be OFF if you are shooting video with gimbal. Otherwise when you tilt the gimbal and it blocks the EVF it switches the view and shuts down your LCD Screen.

It is a great video camera for many things. The only downside is the lack of headphone jack if you do interviews etc. But if this for vlogging it is not a problem. I will do I video set up video later this year.

Yes these Best Settings videos are a bit hard to make. If going slow the video will be too long. The best way is to stop the video and make the settings and them continue with he next one. I will try to figure out how to make these better.
That is an old video and chapters were not available then. Of course I could add them and will do it when I have the time. Have added timestamps to some old videos.
No, I am gonna keep this one. It is a very good camera. I am glad that there are alternatives and if someone thinks that a FF is better for them. Get it.
