Thanks Peter. Recently purchased the EM10 mk iv primarily as a stills travel camera. Just think the value for money is fantastic. Weather sealing would be handy, but once you add on the cost of pro lenses to get full sealing the cost of the EM5 was just too high for me.

For me. It’s the upgrade. Same with iPhones. I will upgrade my iPhone when there’s something major to upgrade for. So I waited a long time to upgrade from my iPhone 6S! So that’s how I look at the Mk IV from my Pen Mini 2. Panorama mode, Live on2 for astrophotography, flip down screen for casual vlogging, 20mpx, better autofocus. Finally.

I went with the EM5 MIII since the prices nowadays are pretty close. Also, I prefer to use the FL-LM3 flash instead of the pop-up flash (although the latter is more convenient since it's part of the camera) since it allows me to bounce the light. Everything else-weather sealing, IBIS, focus points, etc.-is gravy.

Hi Peter -- I've got an E-M5iii and have pre-ordered an E-M10iv -- I have an E-M10ii which I love and still use - particularly with the small Olympus primes like the 17mm f/2 and t he 12mm f/1.8. I also adore the 14-42EZ lens, as well. Love your videos which I find to be useful, informative, and very well produced. Stay warm and safe up in Helsinki!

Two very interesting cameras. The em10IV Grip is much better, but I need the em5III features. In that case I will wait for the future em5IV, and hope that it will have a metal body again. I also loved the launch of the 100-400 lens, but as I have Pana Leica, I have no interest in buying it. I am very interested in the future 8-25mm f4 and would very much like to see a version III of the super compact 75-300mm and would like to see it weatherproof and with a constant opening of f5.6, keeping the same dimensions. Thanks for the video Peter!

The new EM 10 is a great value but the EM 5 Mark iii is a more sophisticated camera with more room for growth if one is an enthusiast. Grips are highly subjective and I find the grip on the EM 5 to be just fine, although I have not compared the two. Also, my understanding is that the sensor in the EM 5 is slightly better, despite the fact that they are both rated at around 20 MP. Additionally, the EM 5 has a high resolution mode and the EM 10 does not.

I recently started taking portraits with E-M5mark3 and the f/1.2 pro lens and the eye detection doesn't work unless I get a close-up of the face. Since there seems to be no firmware update, I am thinking of replacing it with the E-M10mark4.

I appreciate that despite the higher score given to E-M5 you told us why E-M10 is for you-because you will use it more. I have so many times wanted to buy the OM-1, OM-5, E-M1 MK iii, E-M5 MK iii, but could never pull the trigger because of the articulating screen. My favourite Olympus camera right now is E-PL7 because it is light, compact, sharp handheld at 1/20 easily, the ergonomics is great, and has a TILT screen. I bought the PEN-F as an upgrade-for the 20MP sensor but despite how much I have tried to make that camera work for me, the articulating screen and the horrible ergonomics (no grip) are deal breakers. I added the Olympus grip, but the weight and size increased noticeably. The metal body of the PEN-F is also a pain in that there is absolutely no shock resistance (or material around it) so when carrying there is a constant subconscious fear of either damaging the camera or worse-damaging whatever it hits. Price is not a concern but in the end I had to give up on higher end flagship models and get the E-M10. Being the only 20MP Olympus available in North America (no EP7) with a good grip and TILT screen of E-M10 Mk IV means I will actually use the camera and enjoy it.

@svvancouver3307 I totally agree with you on all points. I absolutely loathe articulated screens and will never buy another camera that has one. Like you I am also looking to upgrade from the great little E-PL7 to a model with the specs and ergonomics of the O-M5 and E-M5 iii but both have the dreaded articulated screens. The E-P7 would be fab for me if only it had an EVF. The E-M10 iv looks interesting but it's just lacking a few things for me that Olympus could've easily implemented if they'd put a bit more thought into it. I'm now beginning to wonder if I should just go back to Fujifilm.

Nice comparison. One thing you did not mention is that the M-10 series cameras don't get the kind firmware updates the upper tier cameras in the lineup do. You'll only get some minor ones for very glaring bugs and support for new lenses. In this case you get what you pay for.

I wish Olympus would put weather sealing on all their OMD cameras. I also agree with you regarding the LCD panel. I don't do any video work so I actually find the fully articulated LCD panel annoying. I have an em-1 mkiii with an L bracket which pretty much renders the rear LCD pretty much useless for low angle shooting. I have small hands and lost 3 fingers on my right hand in an accident, so the size and contour of a camera body is really important to me. When I first started looking at M4/3 cameras, the original EM-1 fit my hand almost like it was a custom fit. The newer em-1 bodies with the deeper grip are not as comfortable for me so I actually bought an em-10 mkii which I really enjoy using using especially with the 14-150 mm lens. For me it has become my go to camera and lens combination for travel. If the new EM-10 bodies would include weather sealing and phase detect auto focusing I would get one in a heart beat.

All depends on what you want to do with your camera and your particular needs but I find the price difference between an e-m10 mk 4 and an e-m5 mk 3 or an e-m1 mk 2 is not huge, yet the latter two have significant advantages, like better video and audio, phase detect autofocus, fully articulated screens, weather sealing/heftier build, and things like high resolution mode and focus stacking/bracketing. Even the older e-m5 mk II, which is still available and costs the same, is I think a better camera than the e-m10 mk4 in terms of features for the money, with the exception of the sensor resolution and grip.

Thank you Peter, I am just about to embark on the digital photography journey and I would be using the camera very much as an amateur and for countryside / holiday pictures. I am definitely on a budget which is why the 10 appeals but I would like one of these two cameras, my question for anyone that might have an opinion is could the EM 10 Mk iv be used in inclement weather or must it be shielded in some way. Lets face it the weather here is at best damp most of the time or should I plum for the EM 5 with its weather proofing? Many years ago before AF I used to shoot 35mm and never gave the weather much consideration but with delicate electronics I don't know.

I currently shoot with the e-m10 mk I and have wanted to upgrade for a long time and get a zoom, like the 12-40 pro (I only have the 17 f/1.8 and the 45 f/1.8). right now, I can get the e-m10 mk IV plus the 12-40 pro or the e-m5 mk III bundled with the 12-40 pro at exactly the same price. I think if I was only getting a body, I'd go for the e-m10 mk IV but the e-m5 mk III bundle is a great value at the moment (about 400 € off the sticker price at Amazon, for example).

Thanks for a very thoughtful comparison. Obviously the EM5.3 is ‘better’ but are the extras needed for your shooting. I haven’t really considered the EM10 range much before but I really value the tilt screen rather than the flipping flippy screen I have on my EM5.2 second body. I am fortunate to have an EM1.2 for wildlife photography but for general holiday images as a second body with a prime lens an EM10.4 might be better than my old EM5.2. Sure there are very competitive panasonic bodies but the style of Olympus is worth a good extra to me. BTW, just nit-picking, but you rather confused me because on the table the EM10 was on the left but on the ‘result’ screen it was on the right and I think you had the prices round the wrong way too?

I would not even be considering either one of these cameras except that (unless I'm wrong) they both use the BLS-50 battery, which is important to me because my other Olympus MFT cameras use this battery. The determining factor for me though, which you did not mention, is that the E-M10 Mk IV has a built-in flash, while the E-M5 Mk III does not. However, with my E-M10 Mk I, I have the ECG-1 grip which is not available on any subsequent E-M10. So, for now, the E-M10 Mk I is my "forever" camera!

9:35] I really understand your preference for the tilt-up screen for still photography compared to the flip-out articulation screen - story of my life. The articulating screen on my current camera is a bit of a bother, particularly because my extra-spendy-high-dollar not-quite-really-right-stuff L-bracket interferes with the articulation just enough to be annoying. This all true except when I'm taking a shot with especially and there is simply no other way to work but flip out the screen, rotate it, and tilt it up just like I wish it would holding the camera horizontally. Why can't all cameras do both?

@@ForsgardPeter you definitely should, it is a very capable camera and perfect for street, walkabouts and everyday pictures (nobody notices the dinky little thing 😅). Unfortunately you can't add a viewfinder to it anymore (it was possible with the E-PL8 and earlier!), and I really wanted/needed something with a viewfinder as it's easier for my eyesight. I was very sad that I had to sell it (to finance the E-M5). The E-PL10 has some subtle improvements like the ability to adjust the strength of the Art Filters. That is a massive thing IMO, as sometimes a reduced strength filter effect is more desirable than at 100% (obviously this is for the benefit of non pro photgraphers but perhaps also pros who just want to enjoy and not do too much serious work on their days off?).

Excellent comprehensive coverage. I have still been using my E-P5 because the tilt EVF is so helpful for my photography. Another case of a small usability feature meaning a lot. Olympus abandoned that idea. So did Panasonic after the GX9. A small rangefinder style body with a 90 degree tilt EVF and the latest sensor would be a compelling purchase for me. Maybe tell Olympus. 🙂 In the meantime I am using my full-frame Lumix most of the time.

I'm surprised the sensor and image processor didn't come into this. I chose the M5.3 two weeks ago based on its core imaging capability, since I was upgrading from an aging M5.2. I have a M10.2 as well but it's far more limited in its capabilities, far more of a daylight-only shooter. That said I find them both a joy to use. If I could encourage OM Systems to make any other models it would be a rugged fixed-lens beast with the guts of the M10 and the ruggedness of the TG-6.

Almost a year late, I haven't been paying attention, very sorry. I got my third MFT camera February of 2020, an E-M5.MkIII this time. Wow do I love this camera! On one hand, you are not the only who has the favorable opinion on the shape of the new E-M10.MkIV grip, so I think I will take your word for it. I also agree that the tilt screen on the E-M10 series is often less fiddly than the articulating gizmo found on the E-M5.MkIII. I couldn't care less about shooting selfies. The main reason I sprang for the E-M5.MkIII was PDAF. Man is it fast! My second MFT camera was an E-M10 that I picked up the summer of 2014. I shot thousands of pictures and had a very enjoyable experience with the seven-lens kit assembled. Although I never thought the AF was slow for pictures (awful for video), I did have infrequent fails on focus lock. I have had none in 18 months with the E-M5.MkIII. Video tracking is way better, even though I do not do much of it. The think I like least about the E-M10 is putting the SD card together and beneath the battery door. The flimsy door broke on the original camera, so I especially like the more robust sealed body and separate door for the SD on the side of the camera. I haven't yet used the dinky flash that came with the camera. I do think I could be motivated to get an E-M10.MkIV also, should I be on a shoot that would favor alternating between two cameras instead of switching lenses on one. I am not usually in such a hurry.

Come Black Friday, both cameras should trim a good $200 off or more from current pricing. That $699 for a body + cheap kit lens, will be a tough sell when you can get the Lumix GX9 with a 12-60mm lens for $799. My guess is that GX9 will actually trim more off as well. MFT is just getting tougher to sell, would be my guess. The video end is holding up fairly well, but that side of the equation has challengers now as well. The Olympus to JIP move is not boding well for holding prices in the line-up. Discounting ahead. -Loren

@@lorenschwiderski I don't know about the US but here in the UK, Olympus cameras are well overpriced ( like everything else TBH ). A G9 is now retailing for £900.00 or just short of $1200.00 for the body. An EM1 MKiii is still a tad shy of £1500.00 for the body, £2300 with 12~100 Pro lens. This is crazy considering the present dire state of the economy and employment while Covid-19 ( good excuse for the companies to shed workers ) is still making the poor people unemployed. Hi Peter, thank you for the video. About the mode dial of the E-M10, I remember when I had my Mark II, I could reprogram one of the dial positions (the green auto if I remember correctly), to serve as a custom set. Isn't that the same on the Mark IV?

On my EM10 Mark2 and EPL7 any mode dial position can be reprogrammed to use any of the four Mysets. I think this is much more useful than having one or more dedicated customised positions on the mode dial. Have the Mysets been removed on the Mark 3 and Mark 4 models?

Olympus should have kept at least phase detection AF in E-M10 mk IV in order for it to be competitive as somebody’s first “post iPhone” camera against Fuji and Sony offerings. Especially at this price. As for value for money vs E-M5 III it all depends on particular country and personal needs. I wanted 12-45 pro lens. Here in US E-M5 Iii kit with this lens is being sold for $1399. At the same time E-M10 IV ($699) plus 12-45 would cost you $1298. So the rhetorical question is: Does E-M5 III worth a hundred extra backs over E-m10 IV?

As an owner of the EM5 , I'd recommend this camera for photographers based on it's awesome weather sealing, build quality and small size and that's before you get to the picture quality, IBIS and auto focus. The negatives are the evf, and battery life and although the 16 megapixel sensor isn't the best I've found it sufficient for print. I'd suggest anyone buy a new em5 Mark iii because you'll never see such a well built travel camera again although the EM1 Mark iii, which is on my wishlist comes close.

Actually, at this late stage of the game with Olympus having been bought out, Panasonic manifesting decreased interest in M4/3 I am thinking to jump ship from M4/3 all together. One of my professional photographer friends in Japan however suggested looking at Olympus as being a good bargain due to recent news of the acquisition and takeover of Olympus by year's end. So, on that input, I have been thinking about both models. Having had the Olympus E-M10 Mark-II and III in the past I thought, hmmm, maybe just best to wait for mid-September announcement of the E-M10-IV. However, one caveat is driving me away from that is the lack of PDAF and only CDAF. So, even though the E-M5-III is almost a year old already, I am thinking of that in lieu of the Olympus E-M10-IV. Thoughts? Alternatively, I am thinking to just do away with M4/3 all together and look towards (back to) Sony. They are rumored to be soon announcing a full frame model, something along the lines of theirf A6000 but FF and at an affordable price. $1,000 USD-ish.
@manhattason
@manhattason 4 года назад
Jerry Suppan it all depends what amount of investment you’ve put into your micro four thirds lenses. I don’t know why people get so caught up on camera bodies when it’s the lenses that are your true investment. If you’ve invested in lots of quality m43 pro lenses and primes, then I say stick with the m43 ecosystem and shoot with the gear you have until the wheels fall off or until they no longer serve your real needs. It’s not like suddenly Sony coming out with an affordable entry level FF body suddenly makes your m43 obsolete. Also, if you switch and ditch you’ll have to go through the trouble of building up a new e-mount collection of lenses, which will cost significant money. FF glass costs a lot more and are a lot bigger than m43 glass, all things being equal. Also keep in mind there’s likely going to be performance compromises between an entry level FF model and a top-of-the-line m43, whether it’s weather sealing and build, ibis performance, or continuous shutter speed. After all, the full frame manufacturers ultimately want to drive you to upgrade to their pricier models, while Olympus is putting everything it has into their top tier models because they have little higher to sell you. Frankly if you already have good m43 glass, I would suggest purchasing either a Panasonic G9 body, which is their top-of/the-line m43 still camera, or an Olympus E-M1 MK2, which is same specs as E-M5 MK III but better build. Both can be has for a $1000 US, which is not much more the $700 price of the less capable upcoming E-M10 MK4.
@tokyojerry
@tokyojerry 4 года назад
@@manhattason Thanks for that in-depth feedback. Much appreciated. I understand very well where you are coming from. I've had Sony, Panasonic, and Olympus bodies from way back when, perhaps too many in fact, getting caught up with the GAS buy/sell syndrome. Sony NEX-7, A6000, A6500, A7 (original FF), Panasonic GH1, GH2, G7X, and yes, even the G9 (regrettably sold). Olympus E-M10-II and E-M10-III, E-M1-MarkII. State of confusion, right?! At the moment I am cameraless and get by with my simple but trustable Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro smartphone. But because of upcoming possible production projects for money, I am thinking either this upcoming $1,000-ish Sony FE-mount device, or the Olympus E-M5-III, just a notch down from the E-M1-III but much more affordable. As for lenses, I don't have all that many but do have a couple of the basic Olympos lenses. 14-42mm pancake and 12-50mm internal zoom. I reckon there really is not the perfect camera out there from any maker. There will always be tradeoffs. Currently, I can get the E-M5-III on Yahoo Japan auction for around the USD equivalent of $800, new. I am debating whether to spring for it or just wait until mid-September for the Sony announcement. I am retired but do freelance work, so I have to keep an eye on my spending and budget too..

I have the M1.3 and M5.3. I think the C mode on the M5.3 is a complete waste of space. Firstly, as there’s only one C on the top dial, so you can’t switch between custom modes using the dial. Secondly, the C2 and C3 custom modes in the menu cannot be assigned to a custom button. Olympus have made this particular feature slow and cumbersome on the M5.3. I look forward to a firmware update to fix this.

I have an E-M1 iii and an E-PL9 as a second small camera. I had the opportunity to buy a PEN-F (2nd hand of course, quite cheap, cheaper than a new e-M10 iv), and speaking of look and feel (including ergonomics), the PEN-F is far ahead my former e-PL9 and even the e-M1 iii (for example : the exposure compensation dial, the EVF on the side, the AF pad with the LCD which really works on the PEN-F and is better than the E-M1's joystick, the remote cable on the shutter button, etc.). I presume it is equally better than the E-M10 iv from this point of view. As it has no grip, I added a plate with a grip on the PEN-F, you can easily find cheap grips with L-plate which are really convenient, for example for making panorama on a small tripod or monopod or even a selfie stick !) . As the PEN-F and the E-M10 iv seem to share the same 20.3 MPixels sensor with contrast AF only, the choice between these two cameras makes sense, even if one is new and the other has been released in 2016 and can be found only 2nd hand (at a similar price or cheaper). IBIS and CAF (without tracking and with a 3x3 AF zone) are really good on the PEN-F, and it has tripod high-res. Of course the E-M1 has much more features (for example, making a hand held high res shot is quasi instant on E-M1 and asks a lot of storage, CPU power and time on PhotoShop with the PEN, starting from 16 RAW images). Tha ability to attach a bigger lens might be essential in some cases (for example using a 12-100mm can save a lot of time instead of changing lens on travel, sometimes you can't change lens ...), and phase AF can make the difference in action shooting, and I'm not speaking of the magic face detect for portraits. But, as a go to camera and for fun for a shooting session (the front dial ...) I think the best camera is the PEN-F, not the E-M5 or E-M10 If you need a solid work house on travel, if you want to save time when post-processing critical images, or you know you will need greater performance and speed, the E-M1 is the right one

The pictures of E-M5 III bottom plate breakages show inconsistency of the plastic used in the body. Then came reports about rusting screws. Both indicate the work of over-zealous production managers. E-M10 Mark IV user reports so far say nothing about construction quality, good or bad. The menu on the Mark IV is less convoluted than on the Mark II. Personally the deal breaker is that the physical cable remote is removed on both EM10.3 & 10.4

Next a comparison of the MKIII and MKIV! I think I know the outcome

That outcome is quite clear. But I will make a video about is there a reason to upgrade if you already have a E-M10 MKII.

Oh, I don't remember if you mentioned buffer performance and 15fps electronic shutter. It would interesting to see how well that works and I feel like it's a nice compromise for not having Pro-capture mode. That's odd, the E-M10 II has a small focus point option but I'm not sure if the E-M10 III does.

Just gimme an EM5 or an EM1 with the tilt screen of the EM10. I 'm hugely missing the tilt screen of my EM5 mkI on my EM1, this pivoting stuff is just not for me.
