Olympus EM1 Mark III: 3 Fatal Flaws To The BEST Camera I've Tried

I've tested a lot of cameras in my day, and the Olympus EM1 III is the best camera I've ever used for vlogging. It's pretty light, the colours straight out of camera look very cinematic and Fuji like, reliable autofocus (with the right lens) and class leading stabilization. But I'm not sure I can continue using it, due to some fatal flaws that reveal this is not a video camera, it just has video features. Olympus doesn't even know what they have.
We'll also test out a bunch of quirky modes and picture profiles :)

If you buy the camera with the fatal flaws with my affiliate link, I'll inherit Olympus as a company and will fix the camera with my first firmware update. Olympus EM1 Mark III amzn.to/3cwS7MD Leica 15mm f1.7 amzn.to/2yHixN2 And yes, fatal flaw #2 was the bad autofocus blamed almost entirely on the Leica lens lol. Maybe that's why the lens is so light, the autofocus motor is made out of a napkin.

@Free Speech Don't like the fish eye look as well. It makes sense on the gopro, as it creates the illusion of faster, more action packed movement at the edges of the screen, while the center isn't distorted. But for vlogging or general filming fish eye is a no no.

The way Olympus allows easy adjusting of color hue and saturation is far better than any other camera. It's the one thing I always miss in other cameras. You can skip using color profiles and changing white balance. Also adjusting highlights and shadows is easy. Definitely my favorite camera.

You're so good at improv! That really is a special skill. As for the the Oly 1EM mkIII the 2 minute limit on clips kills it for me. As good as my Fuji XT100 is for stills, the pre amps sound like a pit of hungry vipers on speed. Thanks to you I've learn't that an Olympus probably won't be it's replacement (I'm assuming if it splits clips for their flap ship camera, it can only get worse down the pecking order)

I actually got the E-M1X and I love it. Colors are fantastic. I do see a slight over sharpening sometimes. But not always. It’s odd. I have watched an unhealthy number of your videos. Some of them twice. It just dawned on me. The conspiracy. This has all just been a 100 episode video ad for the G85 the whole time. While it may not be the 'perfect' camera, it is clearly the greatest camera of all time. Nothing can overthrow it.

One thing I learned while learning to be an audio engineer...The common listener cannot tell if it's listening to a MP3 or a Wav/Ogg file. Love that almost every time you mention autofocus, it goes out of focus. Almost like when RU-vid recommends something out of left field, and you remember you were talking about it within earshot of your phone, earlier. Correlation? Or Causation? You decide.

Try this, use shutter priority and a variable ND. 1) Position camera to select darkest scnes that will be encountered in sequence. 2) Set camera mode to Manual Exposure and Open Lens Wide Open. 3)Open VND to bring in enough light without clipping. 4)Switch Camera Mode to shutter priority and adjust exposure compensation as required 5) Record. Works great with my GH5 when panning through scene with variable light. Lens automaticity closes down as required when camera traverses dark to light and open as scene darkens.

actually, this 1.8 fisheye lens, looks amazing for what it is ! So small and when corrected, had a pleasing image ant eh 1.8 on a 8mm lens is pretty amazing, the bokeh and the look of it is really nice, i dig it a lot !!

This guy is gold. I dont even like shooting video with my mirrorless or shoot wildlife but i still watch this channel just for the lols 😂😂. Are there street/travel photography channels thats like his channel? Light, effortlessly comedic? I'm so sick of all the dark, cinematic RU-vidrs. It gets old after some time.

Underwater mode is a dedicated mode for underwater photography since Olympus has underwater enclosures for their cameras. It does some color correction to compensate for the reds the water takes out when shooting underwater.

Kind of like the fisheye and Oly combo... Amazes me how in every video you want to go wider haha I dont see the "fuji like" colors though. But maybe its just me. Honestly, I still rank the Fuji xt3/4 higher but Oly in close behind it. GoPro if you dont care about bitrate (I like it better than the idolcam) Maybe you can get the sony zv1 and train your ninja walk to perfection, so you never need IBIS ever again

More and more these vids make me think I need to go with the X-T4. I want Oly and M43 to win. I prefer the Oly lens selection and more travel friendly size and weight. But, the 10-bit, 4k60, and the 2 minute file thing are all considerable problems.

Hey Kasey, another wide-angle set-up you might be interested in testing out... the Tokina atx-i 11-16mm f/2.8 for Canon paired with the Viltrox EF-M2 II speedbooster. This becomes an 8-11mm f/2.0 equivalent. I learned about this lens from one of Levi Allen's videos. Noisy autofocus according to reviews, but might be ok for manual focus if the stabilization is ok.

G9: af/ae on near, 225 af area field, Sigma 16/1.4 with a slightly extended tripod-stick (ok, slightly heavy, but you can handle it) or PL 8-18 @12mm, HLG profile, digital stab on, is lock on and you're pretty much where you want to be 👍😉📷

Chuck an ND filter on when outside. Doesn't have to be vari-ND. Just something to reduce the light so you can open the aperture. And then leave it on. You can still let your shutter drift but maybe it won't have to drift out to 1/8000.

I like this combo. My thought with the 9mm pancake lens is that correcting this for distortion will crop in a bit and get you the field of view you seem to be asking for... with no Toneh at all eh.

*This could be wrong, pure (sort of informed) speculation:* But I suspect Phase detect AF doesn't work Panasonic lens on Olympus body, so you are likely stuck with contrast detect with using Pana lens on Olympus. I think the Contrast Detect and Phase Detect command protocols for the lens differ. Basically CD generally tells lens turn left or turn right, stop. And possibly control the speed at which the lens turns. So the camera tells the lens spin left at whatever speed and camera does contrast detect. When it decides it found the contrast it tells it go back where it found the contrast and stop. The lens that support phase detect typically get a command to rotate X degrees in whatever direction to cancel phase difference. Rather then keep turning this direction and then stop. So I suspect Panasonic lens do not support the phase detect command set on their lens. And possibly some lower end older Olympus lens do not also. My guess you will see this difference in continuous focus when using Olympus primes vs Pana/Leica primes on Olympus body. *again this is speculation, i don't know the details of 4/3 lens command protocl*

Over a year since released and still no native Mac OS RAW support. They also changed the buttons (15) for flash/timer/af metering from the EM1 M II with no option to go reconfigure back to the old behavior.

Had to check -- the EM1-MKIII does have phase-detect AF -- and in some cases it is definitely better than the Panasonic contrast-detect, but yeah, sometimes it jumps to the background, and loses you when you turn your head sideways. Maybe it is just that it does not like you?

It's auto unless it's a manual focus lens like the Laowa 7.5mm or Voigtlander 10.5mm.

I am assuming that olympus cameras will work better with olympus' lenses. Tried the 12mm leica with my em5ii and af keeps losing me (much worse since af is worse than em1 ii & iii), but was fine when using oly 12mm. Same performance when i shoot video with sigma 30mm.

It looks like really good gopro footage with great colors, and some t o n e h, but the distortion is definitely a bit weird. Olympus stabilisation is killing it though.

I suspect that when a camera has phase detect af it may for some reason fall back to plain old contrast based af without letting the user know. It certainly looked like the camera went into contrast based af once you put the leica lens on. I've also read that phase detect af is in practice always a hybrid af mode where contrast is used to fine-tune and confirm focus.

The multiple file thing with the audio sync issue was a big problem with my Sony a65. However, when I imported my files using Play Memories via the USB cable, the files get joined together properly. Maybe there’s a similar first party importing software for Olympus?

Monochrome mode is for people who have trouble conceiving how an image or video would look that way. Monochrome needs contrast and looks like crap without value contrast. We're wired to see color and chromatic contrast more than value. But an easy hack for that is to squint. Then you mainly see lights and darks. So who needs monochrome mode? Cool video overall, as usual.

Have you tried the Laowa 7.5mm lens? It's wider and rectilinear. Stick that on the EM5MKIII and it seems like it would vlog well.

The audio issue with clipped sound, might it be a flaky speed memory card? After I got my Sony Tough 300MB read 299MB write card I don't remember issues. I recorded many videos in C4K in the past, but changed to regular 4K 29.97fps because the file sizers were driving me insane... Just watch my 100+ sub special & you'll realize what it has done to my sanity or lack there of ;p
