Thanks Peter, as I have this week bought a second hand OM-D E-M5 Mark II and this lens and this is very helpful. My much older camera I have used since 2008 is the E420 four thirds.
A lot of people get this lens in kit with an E-M1 or an E-M5, and many are eager to part with it as soon as possible. As I'm not snob and appreciate to have a "sacrificial" zoom with me, I bought one not long ago and the 2nd hand prices for a pristine, never used sample were hovering circa 100 €. This is a great way to source this lens, although I'd recommend to deal in person, face to face whenever possible. At this price, nothing can touch this lense''s perks : 12 mm f/length is otherwise rather expensive, WR is elusive in the consumer range, Fn-L button, macro, etc. This is a jack of all trade, master of none, lens. It does nothing outstanding, but on the other hand there's nothing packing so much features in a single item. There's a lot of other lenses I love, but if I were to be stranded with just the one lens, I'd wish it'd be this one.
Dude, I have a Olympus E-3 that I took to Niagara falls and used my 50-200 lens with it. Took the boat ride nothing covering it. My camera worked fine. If you watch Olympus they take water and PORED it on there splash proof cameras and lenses. Light rain my foot, it can handle heavy rain.
I have this lens since 2014 and I can't change its very versatile and with third party lens hood the pictures looks more contrasty. I have mitakon 25mm f0.95, voigtlander 42.5mm f0.95, olympus 75mm F1.8. But this one do everything with great quality or if I want to clean all four em5 cameras under water 😁
This was my first Olympus lens. I love the macro feature, it is weather sealed and has a power zoom. It does struggle in doors so I got the 25mm f1.8 for In doors and low light. Plus also have the 45mm f1.8mm. I find the 12-50mm is my go to lens in the day. You can get cheap lens hoods from Ebay. I don't use UV filters with this lens, don't want to reduce light since it is slow and a lens hood offers good protection.
Hi Peter, nice Video on the 12-50mm from Olympus.I am also using it, but on the Om-D-Em1, and I was really surprised of the quality of photos within shorter distances and in sufficient light(slight cloudy summer day). Even when it became darker the pictures were still very good. Think this is due to the excellent cooperation between camera and lens.Had also good results in landscape and street photography.
Slight but important error- not "24-200mm" in fullframe equivilent... it's 24-100mm if they combined aspects of this lens with the pankake size of the 14-42 EZ lens, this would be the perfect travel standard zoom lens. Can be had for $130 USD used in excellent condition. Why wouldnt anyone own this lens? great for video also. 2 criticisms are - the size and the manual focus ring is not smooth and seems cheap to me. But it could be that dirt gets into it since it has the clutch mechanism.
Recently aquired a weatherproof OM-D body but no weatherproof lens yet. I want something to take out on the occasional rainy night. Is this 12-50 good idea for wet night city shoots just at higher ISO or just not bright enough to be worth bothering with at night. Maybe buy an Olympus tough 5 instead? An expensive Pro lens would be over the top for me as otherwise I never shoot in the wet.
@@ForsgardPeter Hi Peter, did you find the time to do the comparison? I consider buying the 12-50 mm for traveling, but I am unsure if the 14-42 mm might be the better choice. Also, interesting info about Latvia! I prefer traveling to Scandinavia and the Mediterranean so far, but the Baltic states are on my list.
It depends a lot what you like to photograph. Image quality is good and its dust an splash proof, so its good for travel even if the weather is not great. The electronic zoom is good for video. The price of the lens is reasonable etc. Yes I would.
Thanks for this video. I bought this camera a while ago, and it came with this lens as standard. Although I've got a few nice images out of it, I find it hard to capture the ambience and light using this configuration. Can you recommend the best lens for this camera for 1. big landscapes, and 2. portraits. Thanks again for the video, and for the random knowledge at the end! Best wishes 🙂
Hi Peter, I'm thinking of getting a used 12-50mm as my walk around travel lens due to its splash proof feature. People complain about its small aperture but I guess the good high iso performance of today's cameras may compensate under low light conditions. What do you think? Is pairing it with a em5 II, like you did in the video, a good idea?
How to activate the lens after I mount it on Em10 mark I ? I activate it accidentally, and when I unmount it again, the display goes blank again, just showing dark display, F number doesn't show on the display. What I should do ?
Could you be more specific. What do you mean by activating? It needs to turned from the zoom rig if I remember correctly. I do not have that lens, so I cannot check.
@@ForsgardPeter I'm a beginner just got a camera Gh4 Panasonic and lens 12mm-50mm can you please advise me how to use and be a good photographer like you😊. Thank you
