I might get into trouble over this! Sometimes, when I complete a programme I get cold feet, so I water it down. In answer to my critics, I have not done that here, so I will blame them if you complain. Don't take my comments personally, they are directed at a general audience.

Thank you for your comments, sadly what you say is very true. Much of photographic development is directed at pressing a button for instant gratification and expertise, but in many cases we do not learn about the basics of photography. Through my programmes I try to redress that lack of knowledge. Don't get me wrong, I click and push buttons myself, but I have some idea what is going on inside the camera.

Albeit I am a late comer to this channel and having photographed since 1969, I think I know mostly what I need to know. How wrong I was, as I recently bought a omd em1 and a 12-50mm, venturing into mft system. I certainly appreciate your tutoring in this respect and your fine images as illustrations. Very well conducted and presented. My hat off to you sir for a splendid video. Yes I do wear a hat, as my age permits that elegance.

Thankful for your interesting video. I have had the 12-50 for years and I’ve never bothered to use it. However you have changed my mind and will give it another go. You teach some very interesting points like white balance and spot metering which I will also try, so in all it’s a super video.

Very usefull video mr Derek. Thanks for your time and effort to give us so nice advices for our photography walk. I just bought for a good price the 12-50. Even If many photographers they underestimate this lens is really a very special gear. I love the 12mm which is for me a must and I wanted a more long than my 12-32mm Lumix. I love primes 17,25,45 but when for outdoors activities a good zoom and water sealed is more than enough. You have to mention also the macro capabilities of this lens. Thanks and greetings from sunny Athens.

Thank you for your comments, I like to think that I offer something a little different in presentation and not by just following everyone else. Unfortunately after I had completed the 12-50 programme, I learnt that Olympus had discontinued manufacturing the lens, but you might find one if you Google it. Currently I am testing a new lens from Olympus, the 12-200 and hope to present a RU-vid production by the end of April.

i love your speaking rhythm & pronunciation. sooo nice, i had to have subscribe and i am looking forward to watch your videos :) I just ordered a EM5 +12-50 kit with flash, batterygrip for 280€ , i think it is a bargain. It looked as good as new. Will have to get into olympus settings, i have had a em1 ii and em5 ii also em10 III and it was ... complicated for me, i returned them all... It is no as easy to get into the settings of these cams alike it was to me to get into canon 6D. It just performed from first shutter for me ! i hope with my "new" used em5 i will take my time to appreciate the "custombility" or in other words adaptability to specific demands various users bring into their fotography and find a way to make the em5 work in favor of my needs ... Keep it up ! I love your style ! Greetings from Deutschland :)

Thank you for your comments. It is, or I should say was because it is no longer in production, a great lens. My workhorse is the 12-100, but that is a Pro Lens. I had the opportunity to test the 12-200 which is much cheaper and I enjoyed the experience. I have done a RU-vid about it.

Magnificently illustrated video--so much better than the normal "talking heads" that pontificate and only shoot shots in their back yards,,or of their cats---These images are work of a true photographer with a great eye and skills to match. I bought one of these just as I was dipping my toe into the M4/3 system and needed something better than the kit lens-- found mine in Colorado as a new, "open Box" one for around $100 US and thought it was the bargain of the decade, With one lens you a have a nice wide angle,, a portrait lens and a very nice near true macro lens,,, and you are right,,It's better than all the reviews say it is--just get to know it. Your presentations are so measured and calming--I may use them as de-stressing tool before heading to bed...Thanks ,,,

It's so refreshing to hear someone extolling the VIRTUES of mft's apparent lack of ability to produce a shallow depth of field. I used to own the 12-50, but sold it when I got a Panasonic 12-60, and I was always very fond of it.
@DerekForss
@DerekForss 5 лет назад
The nonsense often expressed elsewhere about MFT depth-of-field is pontificated by photographers (if they are), who do not understand the traditional basics of photography and still important in our digital age.

@@DerekForss during a photographic career in excess of 45 years, I've done a lot of function photography ie setting up a studio and taking portraits of the guests in all their finery. What the clients DIDN'T want were pictures exhibiting a shallow depth of field 😏

Hi Derek, thanks for the video's. Great photos and excellent commentary on your work and how you achieve amazing photos. I am a beginner - hobby photographer. I love the Olympus OMD brand because they are light weight, inconspicuous, and I don't look like a wannabe pro. I've taken my EM-10 mk2 into places where big lens cameras would draw unwanted attention. My 8x12 printed photos have all turned out great. Anyway, pro lenses are not within my skill level or budget, so after seeing this video, I bought a 12-50mm. I am inspired by your work. I have a lot to learn, and I plan to have fun on this journey. Thanks.
@DerekForss
@DerekForss 5 лет назад
Thank you for your comments, I did like your reference to a 'wannabe pro', must remember that. At times I look at the mode setting of other photographers cameras and often it is set on Auto, so who has taken the picture? I feel at times that cameras have got too computerised for their own good and users overlook that true artistic photography is based on traditional techniques that can still be used with today's technology, but instead you end up by being a slave to a camera. You may find my website www.derekforss.com interesting, but no automation here!

Derek thanks for your video. I wonder what is your impression of the near macro facility of the lens or is this arrow permanently absent from your quiver?
@DerekForss
@DerekForss 4 года назад
I get in close occasionally, but I am primarily a landscape photographer. The close-up facility on the 12-50 is useful for occasional use and a feature not found on other Olympus lenses. If I was more committed to macro photography, I would purchase the appropriate macro lens.

Beautiful, beautiful, images, It is like you said before, you must know how to use and set up your camera and lenses, I have some old lenses from my Four thirds E-410 and E520 cameras ( 14-42mm, 40-150mm, 70-300mm, and with the adapter fitted work wonderfully well on the Pen and OM1 Mk1 cameras, I have got lenses that go back to my OM10 and OM4 film days, I do not know whether they would work on these later cameras, Regards.
@DerekForss
@DerekForss 5 лет назад
I have an adaptor for a Four Thirds 9-18 that works perfectly. Olympus used to do an adaptor for OM lenses, but it is no longer listed in their catalogue. There appears to be something quite reasonable by Googling 'Olympus adaptor for OM film lenses'. However, Olympus never believed in using a film lens on a digital camera as they are not tele concentric.
@sanclewphotographic
@sanclewphotographic 5 лет назад
I have an adapter which will allow me to use my old four thirds lenses on my Pen and OMD, but I have not tried this configuration before, I no the American guy Rob Trek has used this method with a good deal of success. regards.

How are the low light capabilities?
@DerekForss
@DerekForss 3 года назад
Performance in lowlight has more to do with the camera. However, at wide-angle I experienced no problems as the maximum aperture is f3.5. Being variable aperture and that you lose two stops between wide-angle and telephoto, you may experience some sharpness problems when handholding using the telephoto end of the lens as the maximum amount of light able to reach the sensor is considerably reduced.
@guyracine7998
@guyracine7998 4 года назад
Hi Derek. Thanks for another interesting video. I noticed that you're systematically underexposing by -0.3 EV. Wouldn't using the Hightlights and Shadows display option, or the histogram, be advantageous? I think this might reduce noise even further without burning the highlights as that would appear on the EVF or LCD while taking the picture.
@DerekForss
@DerekForss 4 года назад
Thank you for your comments. Like so much with cameras and computers there is more than one way in achieving an objective. In the end you use the system that you are most comfortable with and so long as it works, I don't think it matters.

Derek Forss It’s just my personal opinion, and I do own an Olympus from my experience I almost never set my settings to vivid (is it vivid? It’s been awhile since I used the camera). I like the natural mode but yeah! In my opinion I would save the money instead and get something like the 25mm :) I appreciate the comment!

I am sorry to learn that you did not like my programme about the 12-50 lens. Contrary to your opinion, no sharpening has taken place at my end. However, I am at the mercy of RU-vid technology once they are uploaded. You don't appear to have produced many programmes yourself and therefore question if you really know what is involved. Briefly, all images are reduced in size and the entire programme converted to mp4. It is impossible for me to produce a programme that will play satisfactorily on any computer or viewing devise worldwide as everyone have their own ideas on a correct setup. I can see this at home when I compare the colour saturation between Apple/Mac and Windows, the difference is quite noticeable. Unfortunately, the comments and reviews from other photographers (not known to me) does place you in the minority and this is born out by RU-vid's Analytics.
