An additional tip for focus stacking….between sets, take single photo of your hand to mark finish/start of next set of shots. In post it is very useful to know which shot is your first to select to stack each time. It’s also the focused shot at the beginning of the sequence. This is particularly useful when you take multiple sequences of the same subject and there are only marginal differences between each set…say if you photograph plants from tripod

I've been using this method on my Sony(s) for years with great success (provided you remember to do it). However, to take a single image on the OM-1 don't you firstly need dig into the OM-1 menu to cancel the currently in-use stacking or bracketing mode, take a single photo of your hand, then dig into the OM-1 menu again to reactivate stacking or bracketing mode? The alternative is to unavoidably take bracket mode photos of your hand and (if enabled) a complete stack of your hand as you take a while to cancel the bracket via the shutter button. You won't cancel a stack, which then means a wait while it processes. You can instead mark the last stacked or bracketed image with a tell-tale star by highlighting that image in the thumbnail view and choosing one star. Some photo viewing software displays the stars, some not. If not, OM Workspace displays stars, but won't then export multiple selections to some stacking software. There might be (probably are) easier and far more clever ways, in which case please advise. Edit: Just noticed this post: @torkelstenqvist1279 2 months ago Hi, A tip is to assign a function button to swap between stacking and normal mode, to avoid having to go to menus.
@TheNaught1

Totally agree about having too many images to manage. This issue impacts macro, astro, and anytime I accidentally enable stacking or bracketing. I always think to myself, "Self, this is going to be amazing!" then, about 1 hour into coralling the images into a semblance of what I wanted on my copmuter, I say "Self, never again. This is too much work for a hobby." Then 6 months go by, I forget what I said, and go making more stacks. It's people like me the in-camera stacking is made for.

Great video...and I agree with your final conclusion on when to take one shot, and when to take a stack. I have been doing focus stacking indoors with very stationary insects (dead) and that is really the only way to get a perfect stack. Any movement causes blurring and ruins the stack. When I "stack" outdoors I use a high f/stop for increased depth of field and only take 5 shots. Indoors my stacks are typically 100 shots or more! Download a trial of Zerene Stacker. You will get a LOT better results than with Photoshop. You must have nerves of steel to be able to stack by hand! I always use a tripod, even a monopod wobbles a bit. And I liked the music.

I actually tried both Zerene and Helicon, but compared to Photoshop I think I get better results in Photoshop, at least for handheld stacks.

Micael when switching from single image to a sta or bracket - may be worthwhile considering a mod eor single image and then assigning a button for a Custom mode so you will then have the different apertures (&flash if need be) for each type of photography.

I took a few photographs of the moon recently. I focus bracketed 20 shots for each exposure. I was really impressed with the results. Seeing the blended images, I never knew there were so many craters on the moon which were all in crisp focus. Bracketing produced raw files which meant I could manipulate them in post production.

Yip - they're aphids mate (Hemiptera: Aphididae), I'm not sure if you're interested, but half the reason why I love macro photography is because the bugs are so interesting. Eg Aphids are apomictic parthenogenetic, which means they don't need males to reproduce. In fact there are a number of species where males don't exist at all. Also, many species are symbiotic with ants where they produce a sugary liquid for the ants to eat in payments for the ants' body guard protection from predators. So, instead of being eaten by the ants, they live in the ants' territory and pay them with food. Cool eh :)

Good video. I am considering to buy a Sony a6700 or E-M1 Mark III. If I can afford it, the Sony will come with lenses 18-135mm+70-350mm+Sigma 135mm Macro. The Mark III will come with 12-200mm+75-300mm+OM 60mm Macro w/Raynox or 90mm Macro. I like different kinds of photography, but especially macro, and think focus bracketing seems great. Question: Do you know if a6700 can do auto focus bracketing with flash, like you did? That seems very practical. And which of my options seems best for allround photography, but especially macro? I am a little sceptical about the Olympus apparently lack of great bokeh, and that it is apparently not very good in low light conditions. Sizes and weights are also important to me, btw. I already have a (broken) Sony NEX-6, and a Laowa 65mm macro (among others), as well as Godox TT350 flash. Thanks for any input.

Your post processing will be much less frustrating if you use OM Workspace and Helicon Focus. OM Workspace shows you all the metadata about the image's position in the bracket and you can just drag/drop the entire sequence int Helicon focus which is MUICH faster and easier than Photoshop. Also, in Helicon it is very easy to drop individual frames from the stack. It also has excellent tools for eliminating artifacts. I find that combination much more efficient than photoshop alone.
@MicaelWidell
@MicaelWidell Год назад
Thanks I might look into OM workspace. However I do not agree that it is faster and easier to assemble stacks in Helicon. I tried both and for me it is a lot easier and faster to do it in Photoshop. Photoshop is also much more forgiving if the images are not aligned perfectly.

@@MicaelWidell That has not been my experience. Great video Michael. Like some other commenters I find that Helicon is much faster than Adobe (maybe 10x), and also gives better results (although I have yet to try it with handheld). Typically what aperture do you use, and do you change the step size according to aperture?
@MicaelWidell
@MicaelWidell Год назад
For the last few weeks I've been shooting at f/7.1 because it gives good sharpness and reasonable depth of field. And yeah you would probably need to change step size if you change aperture or magnification. I wonder if the speed of Photoshop for me is because I am using an M1 Apple computer, and Photoshop is much better optimized to take advantage of that than Helicon?

However, I would be interested to know if one can successfully use an LED light (with adjustable intensity) on the camera (with a diffuser as needed) to take macro photos. Would an LED, properly set up, work as well as a flash? Any chance of doing a video that compares the two methods? Thank you for considering my question.

@karlgunterwunsch1950
@karlgunterwunsch1950 Год назад
The stack is ruined from the get go when there are elements within the subject that overlap each other within the stack depth - such as antennae, legs, hair. No matter what you try, you will get halos around the closer elements because when focusing the the more distant elements they will block that element but will have larger magnification than when it itself was focused - and thus there will be an area surrounding the closer element of which you physically can not capture a sharp image of the element further away.
@TimvanderLeeuw
@TimvanderLeeuw Год назад
@@karlgunterwunsch1950 True, I've frequently had that myself, but fortunately not always. If you are in a position to reshoot, you can try to shoot with narrower aperture but that of course increases diffraction. I don't know if you have any solution for this?
@karlgunterwunsch1950
@karlgunterwunsch1950 Год назад
@@TimvanderLeeuw There isn't any solution to this, it's a hard physical limit. IMHO stacks do not work in normal macro photography if your subject has more complexity than a conical smooth object. The solution is easy: Take one shot, put the focus where the composition requires, guide the viewers eye through the shot with the help of all available means (composition, lighting - flash is a poor choice in macro photography anyways and, last but not least, sharpness). Stacks only overload the viewer by showing detail over detail but the subject and the photographers intent get completely obliterated by the stacking process.

The OM-1 has a stacked sensor and is much faster than a Sony 7r IV, plus the Sony has a lot of data to process. For macro, MFT cameras are simply superior, an Olympus 60mm macro lens is so light. You also have to hold the camera as steady as possible and that's easier with lighter equipment.

Macro photography is so much more fun without stacking. Stacking is bound to fail whenever there is any element of the subject overlapping other elements within the depth of the stack, so that's about of 99% of subjects out of the running.

@@trellis3000 Not even an OM-5 will result in successful stacks. I am having a terrible time selecting my first ever camera. I have commented on Micael's videos before because I AM STILL SHOPPING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HATE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I narrowed to Canon R6 II, then saw the OM-1 system 4/3 and the focus stacking stuff after someone mentioned how good it is for macro. Then I saw the Panasonic full frame S5 II that also has focus stacking? Once I got further down the research path, and I saw complaints about not having OLPF on some models. I've looked at every damn camera from $1000-$5000 USD and I cannot decide what to do. For a first time mirrorless camera buyer, analysis paralysis is real. I can't even get into the hobby because I'm terrified of pissing away money on junk gimmicks, or missing a massively important feature I don't even know about yet lol

@MicaelWidell Год назад
Most cameras have some kind of focus bracketing feature, but it seems uncommon to have it work in sync with the flash like you can on Olympus. I understand it is hard to choose a system. But don't be too paralyzed - one thing you can do is to buy your first camera and lens used (maybe MPB.com?) and then if you discover down the road that it was the wrong choice, you can sell it and probably get about as much money back as you spent!

@karlgunterwunsch1950
@karlgunterwunsch1950 Год назад
Don't chose a system because of it's ability to stack - stacks are bound to fail 99% of the times, not because of your or your subject movements but because of physics involved. And use of flash in macro photography guarantees horrible looking images and unnatural looks, not even the best diffusor can prevent that from happening. I too experimented with flash photography for a long time - but today I don't even take my extensive collection of flash guns out of their drawer they live in anymore, at least not if I am going out photographing macro images. Many subjects have highly reflective surfaces which will show the viewer your flash setup and then there are the areas that are iridescent or have so small structures that are within the wavelength of the visible spectrum, these will look horribly unnatural because of the direction of the incoming light.
