We got a battle today, the Olympus OM1 vs the Fujifilm XT4. Olympus has only matched the specs of the XT4, even years after the Fuji was released. Same 4k 60p, HD 240fps. But there's more than specs, how do they compare for wildlife? Who has the sharper video, better stabilization, autofocus, dynamic range, cinematic look etc.

Along with the Panasonic 100-300mm f/4-5.6 II Power O.I.S. Lens-that is also a decent bargain. I have just seen one used here in the UK for £349 :-)

Great work you are doing here, highlights how such comparisons between different systems can be incredibly nuanced. I have a mix of Olympus and Fuji gear, and I have that 75-300 lens, which is incredible for what it costs. I'm getting older and no longer want heavy gear, so a 150-600 quiv that weighs a tad over 400g will beat out the Fuji 100 - 400 every time. It can also, as you discover, make excellent results, just don't bother in low light. The Fuji 26mp bsi sensor, as I understand, has very good dynamic range, while m4/3 you still have to watch highlights. I have no experience of the OM1, but the new sensor sounds like a fairly marginal improvement over the older 20mp versions. When I have a bit more time, I'm going to try this DXO real raw editor and see what can be done with the Olympus files. Note I shoot mostly stills, but..

As an Olympus fan I have to applaud your honesty. On the other hand, OUCH!🙃 There have been a few software tweaks that you probably already know about since this video and, apparently, there is a trick to getting the bird/animal eye detect to work more efficiently. I've seen it discussed on a few other videos. Overall though, thanks for your honesty, your attention to detail and your humour! (I'm still springing for the OM-1)

Do you want great results (wildlife) with the OM1? You should use the 40-150mm f2.8 + TC or the 300mm f4 or the Leica 100-400.

I don't know about video, but with stills, if you set to focus area to "all" or "large" the animal tracking seems to work better.

I think the 75-300 Oly lens might be too slow for the autofocus. Have you checked out some of the video from Espen Hellend? There may also be something in your settings for the animal eye detect on the OM1 that isn’t quite spot on. But, even if that lens is making the OM1 animal autofocus not look good, it still is a bargain at its price point. They still have some catching up on video. That was the original company not realizing the change in the industry. He shoots both video and stills.

Love your videoes! I guess I like hot dogs and popcorn - lean toward the OM-1. Not sure if your camera has been upgraded. Version 1.1 : 1) Improvement of stability of connection with Atomos Ninja 2) Addressing the following issue: a) The camera freezes when focusing under the following conditions. i) Shooting mode: all still modes b) Focus mode: S-AF+MF, C-AF+MF, Starry AF+MF, MF(AF on) c) Frame rate: Highspeed frame rate d) Environment : Dark environment e) Operation : while EVF-style shooting, start AF. New Version 1.2 firmware for the OM-1: 1) C-AF performance is improved for still image shooting. 2) The stability of movie shooting is improved. Worth a shot! Almost a good joke.

The one glaring problem with that lens and the Panasonic 100-300mm is purple fringing. There is also no weather sealing on the Olympus lens or the old version of the Panasonic 100-300mm. Version 2 of the Panasonic lens does have weather sealing.

8:05 it doesn't looks like oversharpening: looking at several stillframes, I think Fuji better protects highlights so that the very bright spots if the picture never blow up, while Olympus sets the threshold one notch higher. I don't know if this can be tweaked in the setting or it's a problem with dynamic range. I also think there is a list of lenses on the Olympus site telling you which can exploit the OM1 autofocus to the limits and which does not

You compared two lenses which are VERY different in aperture, size, weight and price. The only thing similar is equivalent focal length. Olympus says, the camera automatically adapts the image sharpening to the lens sharpness and aperture and compensates diffraction blur as far as possible. This can be the reason for oversharpening. You should compare Olympus 100-400 (which is a very sharp lens, but 1/2 the price) to Fuji 100-400.

On the OM-1 I used subject detection on cars Panning up and down the highway It was useless so instead I stuck to good old fashioned CAF without tracking......and it worked much better.

You can picture the difference in video like fuji being a low radius sharpening and olympus being a large radius, any panasonic will likely look much better

I had been on the fence about buying the OM-1 I don't shoot video so your videos on videos features for it are meh. Found a brand new one at KEH, ordered it and it came June 29th. Used it for an air show over the weekend. The plane AI is amazing. I took and hit more shots than I ever have. I also used it to track and take a shot of a duck flying past. Picked it up instantly. I upgraded the firmware yesterday. Heard it makes the c-af better. As far as your video. Again, the 75-300 is a subpar lens in comparison to what else is out there. I'd be willing top bet you would get better performance out of a better lens.

As om1 tends to expose brighter, would it be worth underexposing by 1/2 stops and have less cheap highlights?

You set the grad to lower highlights. When I still used Olympus I would set highlight to -2 or -3. This way the shot isn't underexposed but you get some highlight back

I'm hoping to find the contrast can be lowered further than here next time I try film something on an OM-1. I'm sure the sharpening can be lowered in the 8-bit modes. Fuji did look nicer, but I think that's mostly less sharpening and contrast. Fuj should have a little more DR.

Funny stuff! Honestly, the 75-300 is a clunky lens, especially in regard to auto focus. I have one and was ready to get rid of it but then did some experiments…careful manual focus can get much better results. The image quality gets a bit softer after ~275mm. I have their 40-150 f2.8… this is a pro quality lens with snappy auto focus. I primarily use it with a 1.4x teleconverter with excellent results.

Fujifilm always looks muddier in the shadows, but the highlights are nicer. Wildlife looks better with softer shadows. I nevre trust AWB on my Fujifilm, it whiplashes between too green and too magenta always. 4800K is the way to go, 5300k in shade.

How do I know you are living in a safe neighborhood? You can go out having this kind of equipment with you and not getting mugged. Also, you should be more moderate in regards to the weight you are carrying and the pressure you put on your spine. That was not a balanced way to carry those cameras. I paused the video at 0:24 to write this. I am going to watch now the rest of it. EDIT: I am at 6:14 know and keep watching. I really like this wild life footage of yours. It is very interesting apart from being very relaxing. So far I cannot choose between the two. I am going back to watch the rest.

It's weird that the AF on the Olympus is no good in video because it rivals the top wildlife cameras for stills. Maybe it's the lens idk but it works really well for stills with the 300 pro. Seems like something a firmware update could fix but Olympus never cared for video. OM1 is a dream for wildlife stills.

The OM-1 AF is usually great. The problem here is testing it with a lens with f/6.7 max aperture and never mentioning that AF performance is affected by the amount of light hitting the sensor.

BUT It's obvious you have to go borrow that 300mm f4 from Camera Canada and test it out...It's one of the classic mft lenses which in theory can't be beat on weight, pice , quality....but in practice? Find out! PS: I had the 75-300 and never got it to work. So I'm curious about the 300. PLZ.

One thing is being overlooked, you are really doing a fine job with your video work on wildlife! Very impressive! The OM1 appears to need some more updating on video focus. Maybe if you dig deep enough in their stupid, poorly designed menu system, you might locate something that would work. The OM1 is just not video-centric. The Fuji really fuks the green colors badly.

I have had the OM 1 for three weeks, with the Olympus 100 - 400 it is fantastic the bird focus and tracking works very well , great in low light, high ISO. I agree your settings must be all wrong, try bird subject detection for birds ;-)

How nice would it be if eye detection, animal or otherwise, would respond to manually focusing. That way you could find tune with manual focus, but allow eye detect to lock on and track your subject... For instance, if the eye detection was finding the front most birds, and you just gently turned the focus ring to move the plane of focus toward the birds in the back and eye detect intuitively looks for eyes nearer to that focal plane. That's AI that somebody should be working on.

Awesome comparison. Shows very good that sure..... the lens is also important, but nowadays the sensor and processing has also a VERY HUGE ROLE! For Mirrorless even more! I prefer a "good" fullframe camera like my EOS RP with midclass lenses over a lower end/beginner APS-C camera with high end lenses. But i hunted since ever good 2nd hand deals so im relying on "cheap" glass like a 75-300mm

And its so true... i basically switched with my 75-300 telezoom on more or less only manual focus since well... the AF doesnt even find anything at 200mm+ (on my RP aswell as my older DSLRs)

A good example of why "sharpness," as a lens criteria, is way down the list. Whether applied or inherent, the lack of midtone nuancing and highlight and shadow over saturation and contrast makes the Olympus look 1985 camcorder on video tape to me.

Usually other youtubers recommend to put sharpness to minimum for all the olympus series in video recording, like in the old canon dlsr, that makes the rendering more "natural" and "camera-likes" , same for the colors, they recommend "natural" colors, no "flat" or "om log".

Maybe try using one yourself, you can't lower sharpness in flat or om-log.

It's amusing going back and watching this now because you are no longer an XT4 owner, as far as I recall. Do you miss it? The OM-1 has improved video with firmware updates, especially with autofocus. It's still slow at times, and will lose it, but it will reacquire it. So that's something. You can change sharpness, contrast, etc. with 265 in picture profile mode. If you change it to anything else, it gives better, ungraded output. Yet you can't control those elements of the video. I'm not sure what the thought was behind making it work this way. It's a tradeoff for sure. I hope they'll pay attention to user feedback and change this. The sharpness and contrast cutoff is a bit excessive, as you noticed. So it would be nice to be able to adjust these things.

That digital sharpness you mean does have a term but i always forget about it, yes the Fuji when cropped does look much better but at 720p the Oly is on par. Not my case but it does help to remember most scrubs watch content on their phones, even movies themselves, hence why grading has gone down the shitter too taking this into account Also popcorn doesn't make you fat, holy oil drinker

Sitting at a water front cafe table an 50 US cent ice cold beer 🍺 watching amazing birds just own in from India..local birds in bright colors damm my fuji is on a book shelf..i start filming with the new samsung 240fps 1080p i let it run ..1 minute...2...wow..then i remember im sitting on my RX100..try that.. didn't frighten the wild life..perfect focus unlimited 120p with sound great color...a used rx100 mk 4 $500.used S21 $350...great images videos...

haha you eff´d it up on that rare bird. and all i wanted was a perfect nature vlogger. and you failed in fear...you better make photos in the futrure. there are some good ol cams out there waiting to be combined with manual classic lenses for the unique bokeh
