My analog Project 2011 continues in the month of June with the Olympus Pen EE2. The EE stands for "electric eye" which was an electrical exposure meter used in the Pen EE models. Lite and very compact the Olympus Pen EE2 captures half frame images on 35mm film. The Pen EE2 has a 28mm lens that shoots at f/3.5 but unlike other cameras in the Olympus line-up the Pen EE2 is fixed focus. This camera has an ISO range from 25-400 and the aperture is selectable from f/3.5 to f/22.

I love this camera, I have one that belonged to my grandma and everytime I use it I'm super careful because I don't want to stop using it ever. I love it and I love the half frame!!!

The aperture not working in iso mode was driving me nuts. Thanks to this video I figured it out. So helpful and concise.

Thanks for posting this detailed review! I didn't know the different color ASA scale gave different shutter speeds. That's valuable info. I just got one of these and it seems to be in good shape. Probably because it was stored with the lens cap on to protect the selenium light meter cell. That's a good heads up to anyone looking for one to buy.

I've since had a chance to test the camera in better light and it does function at both speeds, thanks. Love the little thing, though it made me want other models in the Pen line, starting with the Pen D.

I got bitten by the "half-frame" bug now... today my Fujica Drive arrived and like you I'm with a different camera all the time, totally agree that 72 frames is loads...I guess I'll have to load a 12 exp film in both to try them out! ;)

@skidstar72 Yes - if I remember correctly, the filter size is 43.5mm. The one I have attached is a simple polarizing filter that I added to keep dust off the little lens. I've found that its easier to clean dust and finger prints off a large filter.

An absolutely wonderful video. Informative, educational, fun. As for me, I've taught 10,000 people how to use computers. If you taught a local film class, I'd sign up in a minute. Best Wishes

Sorry about the lat response! Take a look at the inside of your camera. Holding the camera in front of you, you'll see the left side where the film is installed, and the right side where the film take-up spool is. Just above the film take-up spool you'll see a channel (gap) that runs along the camera back - the camera back door fits into this gap. There a little spring loaded lever that needs to pop-out every time the door is opened - it resets the counter. Use a toothpick to see if it's stuck.

great review. My vintage PEN EE2 arrived in the mail today. It is such a great looking camera. Your camera looks to have a filter or piece of circular glass over the lens area, or am I imaging this on yours? Perhaps its a filter? What ever it is, my camera does not appear to have this. Thanks again.

hi there thanks for making this great video. I can see everyones picking your brains here! I'm sitting here with one of these exact cameras and all seems fine, except the film rewind dial doesn't seem to go back to the "S" mark after loading film in it and is stayng on 72? it was moving up the numbers ok when I was testing it but once it got to 72 it won't budge. Any ideas? any help would be great Thanks

Hi there, thanks for the nice reviews, excellent! I have just bought a PEN EE-2, and shot a quick test film with it. It looks terrible, but that's down to me (-re)learning with a Rondinax daylight tank, but that's another story. The visible parts are stunning though.. I was wondering: is it normal that you can turn the dial indefinitely? The clicks are there btw..

Yes, it's normal.

I just picked up one of these at a camera show. Had a dent in it, so I got it for cheap. My question is this: I can't seem to tell the difference between 1/40 and 1/200. I'm wondering if the shutter is damaged and fires at 1/40 only. I've tried both auto and aperture (flash) mode and the both sound the same to me. When I view it through the open back, it looks to me like it's 1/40. Any advice? Guess I could just run a roll through it and see.

My grandmom gave me an Olympus ee2, it was my grandfather's, but watching your video I noticed my camera doesn't have that "red thing", do you think that's normal or should I take it to an expert to see if it is something wrong?
