OM-1 Firmware updates; has the focus improved?

We are now on firmware update 1.4 for the OM-1 camera. Some of these updates saw improvements to the autofocus. Did they make a noticeable difference?
I update my OM-1 to version 1.4 and then try and show if there is an improvement. Not an easy thing to test, but I manage it.
I have always been very impressed with the bird eye tracking on the OM-1, but occasionally the focus would pulse with birds in flight and the odd frame would be lost. Hard to complain when you are getting 50 fps, but it would be nice if this minor flaw could be resolved.

Mike, the big upgrade was in firmware 1.3; it made a significant upgrade to AF speed and accuracy over previous versions. 1.3 also improved noise levels at high high iso to my perception. 1.4 has made further changes, but I think 1.3 was better for holding focus. After watching this, I need to go away do some more testing as one body is still on 1.3!

Mike, if you do this process with a lens attached, you may get the option to upgrade the firmware of the lens itself. This will also bring benefits to autofocus and lens performance in general.

Thanks, Mike. This is very good information and an excellent presentation. I don't have an OM system but I'm still an Olympus fan. I had a couple of the 35mm film cameras and was very impressed with the quality of the cameras. As for the lenses, i still believe they were the best on the market at the time. I expect their top of the line digital equipment holds to those same standards.

Thanks for another entertaining and informative video Mike. I only recently got around to updating to FW v1.4 on two bodies and this is what I've seen regarding AF. Bird AI obviously tracks birds astonishingly well. Sometimes it can pick up on other animals but it's best for the birds. Can't say if it's improved but it can at times make me seem like a competent avian photographer, which I'm not. I do think that Animal AI seems to have improved quite a bit. Even with a wide AF area box, it picks up cats, dogs, horses-equestrian riders etc. much better than before. An associate who updated to v1.4 a while back uses Animal AI for fish during dives. Animal AI also picks up people a lot better as well. People in the landscape, walking, running, climbing. Obviously they have to be of a reasonable size in the frame. I have face detect set up on the One-touch white balance button and subject AI set up on the button below, the DOF Preview. Toggling eye/face detect off switches to subject AI. I still have to use a dial to change between the AI subjects - unless anybody knows a better method that I haven't yet fathomed out. It seems to me the eye/face detect has improved, again with a wide AF area box it works very well. Never use CAF+TR as it's not very good and OM Systems advised that they had not made any improvements to it for the OM-1.

@@MikeLaneFRPS On DPReview forum somebody had a similar experience and his camera is off duty. I think he said he unplugged the camera which is not the same as switching it off. Eager to test the AF tomorrow morning :)

Thanks Mike. Another interesting video and thanks for sharing your thoughts. FWIW. I couldn’t get the camera to download the last firmware update via the PC and as a result and David Smith’s recommendation tried it via Bluetooth and phone, surprisingly it worked superbly, so well worth going that way if you ever have too.

Those are some amazing tracking results. I have the E-M1X, and the bird tracking can be pretty frustrating, but I still get a lot of pretty amazing shots -- especially with Pro Capture engaged.

The most obvious improvement I noticed with firmware 1.3 with C-AF is its ability to find focus with the smallest AF point. Helps tremendously in those situations where birds are perched but partly obscured by leaves and branches. Switching focus between foreground and background objects works better.

I have recently read and seen that using AF sound confirmation in the first instance is the best place to start. The beep confirms focus is attained for sure - not approximately. I always had the sound turned off because I thought it ws for beginners! I am going to give it a try. NB sound on for AF on mechanical as opposed to electronic shutter - there are two different settings to make.

One question: In the old days without bird recognition features, for BIF we used the shutter-pressed-released-pressed technique while panning. To help the C-AF sticking on the subject. Now, with the OM-1 and bird recognition (without tracking): Are you applying the same old technique or are you just pressing the shutter all the time during a sequence? Thanks for help! Yes it was once a very common thing to do. Very rare with the OM-1 do I have to do it. It is usually possible to just keep the finger on the shutter button. If it starts off out of focus it finds focus without the need to dab the button.

Doug - I swapped out 2 R6s and a set of lenses last year to get OM-1. This is the first major change I have made in 30 years (it not a fashion thing). AF on the OM-1 is better than R5 and R6, not sure about the later R6 II. The big advantage is the lenses. OM lenses are optically as good a Canon, better built and a fraction of the price. Oh and a fraction of the weight too. Where else can you buy a new 80-300mm f2.8 (equivalent) new for £1200? The actual lens, the 40-150 f2.8 Pro weighs the same as a Canon 24-70 f2.8 and has a bokeh 'look' only equalled by Canon's ultra premium 28-70 f2. This system is quite unreal, once you get to grips with it.

I always update both OM1's via my PC. I had been updating my EM1X and EM1.3 via my PC for a couple of years prior, so it holds no fear for me. Quite a few OM1 owners, however, prefer to use the OI Share app on their iPhones/android phone, believing this to be a far better method of updating. The reason I don't use the app is because it only allows for the registration of a single camera. With reference to the 1.3 update, I'm a bit on the fence, but I did have a sequences a month ago where all 37 frames of a couple of goosanders in flight and low to the water were all razor sharp. I do think it actually locks on faster since the update. But when I attempted to shoot a couple of snipe I was a little disappointed. Mind you, they are particularly difficult when flying zig zag close to the ground with an MC20 attached to a 300mm f4.

Thanks for this. I have been using V1.4 for some time now. I recently had a wonderful experience with a Barred Owl catching his lunch, the AF performed very well indeed. I was reminded of photographing Eagles with my E-5 way back it worked fairly well. You mentioned Subject Detect with eye tracking, that is the subject detect, I don't have to enable eye detect seperatly do I? Mine seems to work as it is.

Really useful Mike, thanks. I think you use all af points selected ? Have you tried just using a more central area to see if the focus is retained better than all points ? In the swan example the Af momentarily grabbed the foreground rather than the bird.

Bird detection overrides the points selected. With bird detection on it will focus on the bird anywhere in the frame even with just the centre focus points active.

Mike, great content. A couple of questions. I’m fortunate enough to have bought the 150-400 pro lens and been wondering whether it does make a difference in using the Olympus pro filter that I bought because it is such an expensive lens so if I can put a filter on it, I would but does that compromise that image quality and second, for bird in flight, what’s cf sensitivity setting do you use ?

The answer to this used to be simple. UV or Skylight filters did not effect image quality. Then Canon introduced DO lenses and some filters did not work so well with them. I am more cautious how I answer this today. Modern lenses and some filters do have issues. Hard to imagine a OM filter and an OM lens having issues, but you are going to have to try it yourself. One picture with the filter and one without on something with a bit of detail and you will be the expert. Be amazed if there is a difference. Great video I’m currently looking at moving over from canon r6&R7 to the OM-1 do you have a video showing the buffer in the preshoot mode as that really. Frustrates me with the canon how when using that even with a fast card the canvas react sd card the time between shooting a burst and writhing them pics to card is around 30 seconds where you can’t do anything with the camera really grates on me lol . Also how’s the rolling shutter with the om-1 stacked sensor I’m hoping there isn’t any 🤞

Rolling shutter is a thing of the past. I have seen it rarely at 20000th or above shutter speeds. 8-9 seconds to empty a full buffer and the camera responds slowly while that is happening.

Sorry Mike, you got it wrong. With FW1.3 the C-AF with static objects were updated, and it is noticeable. Before it was mostly the first picture was sharp, the next one slightly off and so on. Now more pics are sharp, the C-AF is not hunting as much as before with static objects ... cheers buddy

@@MikeLaneFRPS Up to FW 1.2 the C-AF on static bird (on a stick) you want to make sure it has no eye closed, nor the NIK lid closed, I fire a short burst with C-AF, the first pic was sharp 2 of the remaining 4 were off. This has been greatly fixed with FW1.3. I have three friends with OM-1, and all are naturphotogs. All of them had this "problem" ...

@@MikeLaneFRPS FW 1.3 and FW1.4 did not change the C-AF for moving subjects (accord, to OMDS) and this explains your findings have not changed. It is as you discribed, with 25pics/s shortly the AF goes off target and recovers after 2-3 pics. Hope OMDS chatches up with A1 in the furture. Anyway BIF are a so easy now with the OM-1s hitrate, i am still impressed, even after one year.

Version 1.4 did not change the AF. The Om website says only Enhanced stability of operation when shooting video. Stability of other operations has been improved.

Firmware updates are still only possible with my Windows computer but not my MacBook Pro. Auto focus tracking is good for fly-by photos but not so successful when a bird flies toward the camera. Hope this gets improved.

Slightly off topic but I have looked through most of your videos, because I enjoy them, and not sure if you ever discussed whether or not you use IS when using longer lenses on a tripod. There does not seem to be much agreement on yes or no. Since you often mention vibration in the camera lens, tripod system because of wind I assume you leave IS on but could you possibly comment. Thanks.

I never switch IS off. There is lots of work for it to do with a telephoto lens on a tripod. As soon as you touch the lens or pan handle the vibration can be easily seen in the viewfinder and it greatly reduces when you hold the shutter button half way down.

Think of the OM-1 files files as 5200 pixels wide, at 300dpi that is a 17 inch wide print. Crop it by 50% and you have half. However, that is only half the answer. You could print a 5200 pixel file much bigger. Look at billboards. From across the street they look fine, but close up they are grainy. With large prints you have to stand back to see the whole picture and they look good at that distance. Another thought. It was not that long ago my Canon EOS 1ds Mk3 full frame cameras were producing files that were 5616 pixels wide and that was seen as huge. MFT is not much smaller and sensors have improved a lot since then.

Fyi if you try to update with the battery below a certain threshold (70%-ish i believe), the update will fail without modifying the firmware.

Deactivate the sleep mode of the computer, the upgrade by OM Workspace is a pain in the butt. Sony the same. I h?te it. All others can be upgraded in body by simply copying the upgrade image to the card. Besides, the OM-1 has probably one of the best AF systems anyway. Those few lost frames can be caused by many other parameters. And it has ProCaptureSH2. Not one of the competitors has something similar in that performance and quality.

@@MikeLaneFRPS 😂 well said 👍. - As long the competitors have no such thing like ProCaptureSH2 at competitive performance - up to 70 raw files at 50 fps is whopping 1.4 seconds buffered, and no loss of any AF features such as bird and eye detection as well as tracking - the OM-1 is the ultimate BIF camera. Birds sitting on a perch for fine art prints or so, shot with a 600 mm F4 for ultimate background separation, you can also do with an old film camera (Nikon FM2n or so, that thing has even no AF, I still have one).

In my earlier tests i could see no difference between the two, but after talking to OM cameras technical people they recommended not to use tracking. I had the impression this was a recent change of opinion.

An interesting video, Mike. I am not an OM user, but keep an eye on developments through channels such as yours (I was an Olympus OM 1&10 user back in the days of film!). For the past 10+ years I have been a Nikon user and today have a Z9 as well as a Z6 and a Z7ii. I like to keep my firmware up to date on these bodies as well as the Nikon Z-series lenses and have to say, the process I go through is much simpler than the one you have demonstrated. I know that Nikon offer several routes to upgrade firmware but I always stick to a traditional "off-line" route. This doesn't require use of any special software or cables. I simply download the upgrade file from the Nikon Download Centre to my computer, unzip it and copy it to the root directory on a freshly formatted memory card formatted on the camera to be upgraded. Insert the card in the camera, and select firmware upgrade from the relevant menu and leave it to do its job. Once it gives the message that the upgrade is complete I simply turn the camera off, wait a few moments and then turn it back on and check the firmware release number to ensure it is what it should be. Never fails (yet!).

I note that OMD does not actually say they improved tracking with 1.3, just some vague statement about improvements in C-AF. Everybody is complaining about the tracking function when not using subject detection, saying it's pretty much unuseable, even after 1.3. I don't get why they haven't improved this. This is not good for a brand that sells itself with reference to computational photography. Hopefully, they'll address this.

Hi Mike! I do have a6400 + 200-600 mm f5.6-f6.3, BUT I AM TIRED, of lack of bird eye af, a lack of stabilization, lack of good weight, and I think about swapping straight to A7IV or... selling all of that for OM1 +300 mm f4 + 60 mm macro lens. I am a type of bird photographer, and macro photographer. I am not very interested in landscape photography, though as everyone I like good views of sunsets and sunrises :) Which way should I go? When I hear also about focus stacking, and soooo goood weather sealing that you can go outside at full rain and have no worries about issues with camera, that's a win-win. I don't know what to do. If I could get an answer? I am just worried about quality issue at high ISO (800-1600 on OM1), I shoot at max ISO 1600 with a6400 because it's just **** over that scale. :/

My starting point with the OM-1 is 1600 iso. I have almost never gone slower. I go to 6400 sio readily and start to expect a bit of noise if I go higher. Bird eye tracking is wonderful, but is on all brands now. Procaputure is also wonderful, but all brands except Sony have a version of it. I do not worry about image quality too much. All cameras and lenses take great pictures. It is features I think about. What ones matter most to me.

You know, there is a close APS-C format like Canon R7, with good price.. but my lenses wont fit anyway so I would have to swap entirely too, and there is no good lenses as sony's 200-600 mm, with that price range with canon (... canonn counts at least 2x price for 100-500 mm...) I am very interested in OM1 and 300 mm, as you said there is no lack of quality in the photographs from what I saw, still there is much beyond a photo as composition and light mostly, creativity matters.. and we have a lot of denoise programs today too. If the 300 mm f4 would cost around 500$ less, I would change systems even today, and probably only by that costs I am calculating all of it. Here in Poland it it a costs of 2975$ (1:1 value calculations to US dollars). That's a lot.

What a faff-around to be forced by Olympus to use the OM Workspace software to update the firmware. I had to use this software recently for my Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II camera. Despite following the instructions carefully, at the penultimate step when I had to turn the camera off and on again, the camera appeared dead - it wouldn't turn on again. So I couldn't check the last 2 checkboxes in the OM Workspace software as required. However, temporarily removing the battery for a minute, then turning the camera back on revealed all was fine and it had updated the firmware successfully and not bricked the camera, much to my relief. The DJI Osmo Pocket cameras have the right idea on firmware updates. Just download the update to your micro SD card, insert it in the camera and turn it on. The camera detects the update and asks if you want to proceed. Just click OK and it goes ahead, even automatically deleting the update file from your SD card afterwards. No need for any third party software to be installed.

I have recently upgraded the Firmware on the Sony A1 . I must admit that I usually take my camera into my local camera shop in my case "Castle Cameras Salisbury" for a small fee they do the process, which I have done, but can be quite frustrating and not intuitive ! The last upgrade on the Sony A1 was only a minor improvement for what I do with the Camera. But the next upgrade should include improvements on autofocus in video mode which will be of great importance to my photography. Very impressive OM-1 autofocus seriously looking at the Olympus system as a lighter travel option ! I started in Digital photography with the micro 4 thirds Panasonic system GH3 & GH4 before concentrating on Wildlife. Anyway I got of the point really, if your not confident doing the upgrade take it into your local dealer they need the business 👍

The problem with having two systems (travel option) is modern cameras are so complex. Remembering all those menus and buttons for two systems is beyond me. I struggle with one camera to remember.

are you update firmware from 1.4 to new 1.5? if yes, are you notice any difference after firmware updation?

I have never noticed a difference in AF from firmware updates. I feel any tweaks they make are minor and not readily seen. I am a firmware sceptic and wait for the next hardware to see any improvements. I think one camera is 1.4 and the other 1.5 currently.

Hello. I have tried to update the firmware of my OM-1 to 1.4. But I keep getting an error. " 0x4201D". Found out I have to give permission in my security and privacy to OM DIGITAL SOLUTION. Now I have checked everything in there. But everywhere where it says OM it HAS permission? What do I do now?

Mac or PC? At what stage does the error occur? Things I might try assuming this is a connection error. Plug directly into the computer rather than a hub. I have 2 desktops and 2 laptops so I would be able to try another computer. Turn off antivirus for a short while. Use a mobile phone and wifi to do the update ( I have never done this, but people say it works well). Phone OM cameras tech support if all that fails.

@@MikeLaneFRPS Hello Mike. Found a solution! On one of my older mac's i still had a old version of OM Workspace. That connected right away to my camera and did the update without any problems.

Hi Mark. You have not misplaced your USB to USB-C cable. It's hiding in plain sight. It's the cable that is part of the charger. Now, I hope you have not misplaced the charger.😊

@@dh-oe9wc Yes I have the twin charger, but what cable is in it I do not know. They all look the same. It can take 6 hours to charge a battery from flat. Does yours take that long?

Most often I use the charger for a single battery. To charge a practically "dead" battery it takes between two to three hours.

Mike, (and fellow subscribers) in my humble opinion, this is messed up. The bloody camera should work properly from the get-go! No tweeks! It's ridiculous. But I guess I am old-fashioned since no one else seems perturbed by this kind of thing. In fact my fellow subscribers seem genuinely approving that Olympus/OM Systems has continued to "work so hard" on "improving" their cameras. Thanks for inadvertently giving me another reason NOT to buy an OM Systems camera (or any mirrorless for that matter). That saves me $2,000, and ultimately another $7,500. I was being seduced by that 'Holy Grail of Lenses', the M.Zuiko 150-400mm + built-in TC. In fact I was about to start looking at what equities I could sell in my portfolio! 😅 For me these continuing firmware "updates" are basically saying, "Well we still don't have this camera right. We'll try again"...then, only weeks or even days later..."Oops, still not right. Let's try this"...ad infinitum Step back y'all and look at this situation more objectively. What's wrong with this picture?

The OM-1 is fantastic camera and allows us to photograph things we could not dream of doing a short while ago. No technology ever works every time and new technology keeps pushing the boundaries . I am shocked time and time again how it manages to capture birds in flight so well.

@@MikeLaneFRPS Yes I understand. That surprise comes across. As cameras became more and more controlled by computers inside of them, this practice of "firm-ware updates" became "rampant". It's made me re-consider if I want to get into computerized cameras. So in that sense this video was helpful. And it has probably saved me $10,000! 🤗 It has been like a dash of cold water in my face. To wake me up to the mental state I had drifted into. One where I was seriously considering spending $10 grand on a camera and lens. Something I would never have dreamed of doing just a few years ago when I became serious about my birding photography. I would have thought I was crazy!

It is a microchip inside the camera (computer). So it is no different than any mobile phone, computer, tablet. Softwares updates will come out and hopefully improve the result. I would be more disappointed if OM-System did not come out with updates.
