Before my full blown OM-1 review, I am releasing a series of mini tests (and comparisons) so you can see how much OM System's latest flagship advanced over its predecessor, the E-M1 Mark III. These tests are still preliminary as there are limited amount of compatibility to OM-1's RAW files. This is purely for fun and completely base on my 17 years of pro experience in photography and editing.

Hi guys, remember that this is an initial look as there are limited RAW support on the OM-1. I want to see if I can use DxO and Topaz later and get an ultra high ISO usable. Workspace AI noise reduction does an ok job but it's hard to see until I have more time with it. FYI, this episode was filmed with the new OM-1 in 10 bit, the difference is significant in tonality.

Thanks for the work on this Jimmy. From what I have seen here and on Imaging Resource, it looks like a real ISO improvement of 1 to 2 stops to me, but there really appears to be a big improvement in reducing color shift.

Cheers mate. Yes, I've made a video about values of cameras and talk about points like this. not technically but more about how one should decide what camera is best or what they should pay for a camera. However, on your point, EM1 III is a great camera, so is EM1 II, Unless people NEED those new features, like faster tracking, shoot ultra high ISO a lot, and even the new EVF... etc, there's no hurry to get the OM-1.

I agree. I'm not impressed with the OM1, it did not wow me. Even when looking at these demonstrated results (of non-real world exposures). Better viewfinder than my E-M1 III? Yes, absolutely. Faster operation and processing? Yes, absolutely. Slightly better image quality at high ISO? Yes, but in most if not all real world situations I would never notice. I hardly have a need to shoot over ISO6400. The OM1 is USD2,200; it needs a new set of batteries (which are 50% more expensive than the old model); it needs a new battery grip (which is also more expensive than the previous model). The E-M1 III is 85% of the OM1 (or more) and it costs only a fraction of it. If I had an E-M1 II and I were in the market for an upgrade I'd either wait for the next model or just go with the E-M1 III. The OM1 is too expensive (right now).

Thanks for your video, always super and well analyzed. This new technology of the OM-1 sensor, I would say is the way of the near future, the results are very evident, but it is not only the technology, it is the combination of so much experience and the wealth of knowledge with the innovativeness that Olympus has always perpetuated over time, and the new OM-1 is an example of this. The colors that Olympus cameras know how to convey have something that captures you, for their science of neutral color, but with mellowness and density, vintage and modern at the same time.

I was going to order the OM-1, but after much deliberation I decided to order an EM-1iii instead to save the money I don’t really have spare. The new sensor does perform better, and the OM-1 has some other nice features, but I figured that if people didn’t notice when I switched from full-frame to M4/3 they’re definitely not going to see the difference the OM-1 offers, and for most of my shoots (live music) I don’t go below ISO 1600. I will eventually get an OM-1, but I would rather get a new fast lens for the EM-1iii than spend the extra on the OM-1. It was a tough call though.

Marginal improvement for the OM1 at 52,000 iso. An iso I would never use. 6400 looks almost identical. Pixel peeping might reveal minor differences, primarily a very slight magenta shift, but you'd never see those differences in print at 6400 or lower iso. Fine detail is lost at iso's over 6400. While noise reduction software can mitigate noise all iso's it won't restore lost detail at extremely high iso's. Why is it that no one includes 12,800 iso in these side by side comparisons? My guess is that no difference is significant until 25,600 iso, where all fine detail is lost and there is a magenta shift with the EM1 Mk3. Why even include this unusable iso in tests? To show some difference between the two cameras, which, for all real life purposes is useless? Buy the OM1 for other reasons/features. Not for any fictitious 2 stop noise improvement at iso's no one would ever use. Jimmy: when you're showing side by side comparisons between the two cameras please leave the images on screen for a few seconds longer. You flip through these comparisons so fast that one can't examine the images carefully to see any differences, unless hitting pause.

"This confirms OM Systems claim for two stop noise performance enhancement" is just... I was about to use an ugly word here, but lets not. From the examples given, I can see maybe a half stop difference, definitely not more. And some feedback from a viewer - stop moving the sample pictures all the time and make a more detailed comparison of ISOs usable in actual practice, like 3200, 6400 and 12800.

Congratulations on your purchase. I ordered om-1 and a 12-40 ii from a danish dealer. I found out on monday that I probably won't get my camera. I had to order from a polish dealer. Yesterday I got raw files from both cameras for comparison. OM-1 has much more detail on the higher ISO. Color noise appears much later. Luma noise looks great (it's really beautiful) and it's much easier to remove. At first glance, the files from both cameras look quite similar, but when you edit the photo and move the sliders up and down the difference is really big..even on the lower ISO. I'm really surprised. I didn't expect such an improvement.

I was going to buy the OM1, however it appears to me OM 1 still requires Topaz processing. The hi cost to change to OM1 and still having to process the images, I think one would be better off sticking to the E-M1 mark III, and invest in DXO and Topaz. This way it's cheaper and you still get as good performance. For my money the wow camera is NOT a wow. Perhaps OM1 version II will be the wow cam era and a better purchase.

Having tested it it's no better than the mk 3 MFT fails in low light light . the sensor is simply too small and i'm sick of this shilling of the om1 like it's a perfect camera , the panasonic s5 out performs it in every respect when it comes to iq especially in low light, yes it's got quite a few better things but overall OM need a bigger sensor to compete
@veganpotterthevegan
@veganpotterthevegan 2 года назад
@@MrPetebuster1 It really isn't too small, it's just not good enough yet and maybe never will be. Canon has smaller sensors for different applications that are very good in low light. Of course, they're very expensive. It's probably never going to happen, but not becausw it can't happen. It'll be because it's taking too long, and FF bodies have gotten smaller and smaller while having better IBIS to largely negate the benefits of m43. M43 has the space to have much better IBIS than it does. For certain applications, the gap can be closed with FF if they threw the money at it.

To claim a two stop advantage over the EM1 MkIII is an overstatement, to say the least. To my eyes, the sensor is somewhat improved, but by no more than 1/3 to 1/2 (at the most) of a stop. As with any other 20 MP sensor the images are very good up to ISO 1600. 3200 is acceptable, and with a bit of post-processing, can give nice A4 prints. Above that...

Thanks Carl. Yes it was shot with the new OM-1. I must say, I am still discovering the settings on it. The 10-bit footage looks a lot richer and it helps in 'smoothening' the edges as there are more to render rather than just 'clipped', especially between the brightest spots and the immediate areas. I noticed it quite strongly. Noise cancellation is set to normal as I did before with my EM1X and Mark III. So in terms of that, I left it at default. But I may try to tone it down a tad to see if it makes any difference. Or may be my skins got better hahaha

Cool Test. But for the final Noise Test Review you should change it slightly, because as you said the noise pattern is improved, there is less banding and color noise. Therefore you should take a subject with far finer detail , e.g. fur and feather, and then push the shadows like you would normally do get more details in those areas and for a more even-lit subject. Then i think you would see what the real difference between both cameras is.

Cheers Terry. I will a massive comparison soon, just it will take a lot of time and effort, as you can imagine. That doesn't include video edit after. This test only shows the noise pattern and level. At lower ISO, there's absolutely no difference, because it's as good as a m43 20mp sensor can do. But when you include the improved dynamic range, the files are richer and easier to edit at lower ISO because dynamic range is at its greatest at lower ISO range rather than high.

This is personal preferences as you can change everything in post. This is straight out of camera RAW without any adjustment. Also remember that this is my first look, almost in beta forma as Adobe LR doesn't officially support OM-1, but somehow it reads them. So I guess the final version can be better still. But looking at the noise patter and other areas, OM-1 is vastly better for processing. No one would use a high ISO image without tweaking anyway and this is the bottom line. Hi Jimmy, been a long time viewer. Here's the problem - we've had 3 cameras where the IQ was touted and turned out a dud. This time around ambassadors are trashing the same EM1 Mk 3 which was praised by ambassadors upon launch. What's the assurance that we won't see this happen to the OM1 in a years time? Are OMDS users supposed to be treated as hamsters running on a wheel or hyped up features? It would be so much better if the company lays out the real facts without misleading caveat filled claims. 2 stops of noise performance is of minimal use when accompanied by a list of caveats.

I just found out that the difference between off and standard of the noise filter for the OM-1 is night and day. With it turn on and set to standard, the image quality is like having AI reduction turn on, noise is significantly less at iso 6400 and details are still retained well. I have that compare to my canon RP which I shoot events with. With the same setting for shutter speed and iso 6400, the image quality of the two images is quite similar. This is unbelievable. With the noise filter set to off, the noise is excessive at iso6400. I’m planning to do more testing myself and see whether I still need to shoot the Canon RP if the OM-1 can get similar image quality at iso6400. I might sell off that full frame setup🤣

Interesting test results. Did you try the new noise reduction in OM Workspace? According to a couple of reports I've seen it "compares well" with DxO Deep Prime, which would be remarkable for a freebie! In fact, that would be an interesting vlog of itself - especially if it works on the older raw files too! It still doesn't tempt me to the OM1 because as a tripod-based landscaper I rarely shoot above 800 ISO.
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography 2 года назад
I have played with it for a bit, but I think DxO is superior in general as it uses individual profiles and combo profiles (sensor and lens) to enhance an image. OM Workspace is free, the AI only deals with noise and nothing else. Then the lens profile is in the editing but they aren't as optimised as DxO, but this is my take and others may disagree. I also have Topaz and tried it and it is still the worst out of the three at the moment, however, Topaz doesn't read OM-1's RAW files so I had to convert it to TIFFs and it's never work too well with them anyway, hence I want to reserve my judgement until a later date.

only big difference is above iso6400 which is not native for em13 , iso 6400 is slightly better but i would not call this 2 stops in anyway. And check your catalog, how many pictures are above iso3200? and how many above 6400? cause thats only where you see major difference
@keithholland4322
@keithholland4322 2 года назад
@@mmd90 That's what I'm guessing based on the videos I've seen so far. It looks like it might be an improvement of 2/3 of a stop or something in that ballpark, not 2 stops. I do routinely run my E-M1 Mark II right up to ISO 6400 and sometimes leave my images underexposed with the expectation that I will need to brighten them up slightly in post, and with DXO Photolab, they usually come out looking great. In fact, I'm going to be publishing a book soon and the photo on the back cover was taken about 1/3 of a stop underexposed at 6400 ISO and there is no discernible noise. I would love to be able to push the ISO further if DXO could effectively denoise the images, but until they add support for the OM-1, it's hard to predict the results.
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography 2 года назад
I think people should understand the exact terms that OM used, and even I said in this video. It's 2-stop noise performance enhancement, not reduction. I explained by saying the noise pattern is more uniform, less banding, resulting better detail retention. But the boost is colours at high ISO settings. So you can process them properly and get great results in the final image.
@keithholland4322
@keithholland4322 2 года назад
@@Red35Photography Well I guess it will be interesting to see just how much the ISO can be pushed and still get usable results using DXO Photolab once they get the profile for the OM-1. No, it doesn't confirm 2 stops of better ISO on the new camera. You need to compare other situations and other RAW softwares. I looked the imaging resource raw files with Iridient Digital which now supports it. While there is indeed a notable improvement it's nowhere near 2 stops. More like at best 1 stop- which is still admittedly quite remarkable. JPEGS may improve up to 2 stops given the new AI noise reduction.

Bill Claff- the guy behind photons to photos that one of the OMDS ambassador is using to claim *wrongly* the OM-1 has same DR of Canon R6, posted his analysis and the camera looks ballpark what the EM1II/III are doing in the RAW files. This means JPEGS with the new AI Noise processing are a good step forward but not the miracle of 2 stops. I did examine raws with Iridient Digital and I did see a modest improvement that is still noticeable but not anywhere near 2 stops. Other characteristics are more interesting- like keeping color of the REDS better as the ISO climbs vs the EM1.3. But to push the message that the OM1 is matching FF camera performance is going to eventually backfire.

Thanks. Clearly, there are differences. But only in what are for me extremes. From what I have read so far, it seems to me that OM Systems goes for very sophisticated gadgets. I am sure that there are people who will happily use them, but how many? I felt cheated that my recently introduced EM D1 still came with the substandard viewfinder and now suddenly there is the OM 1 that took care of that. I have the feeling that something fishy went on and that the EM D1 did not get the latest improvements. They were saved to make the OM S more attractive one year later. A substantially improved EVF cannot be developed and produced in such a short time.
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography 2 года назад
One of my biggest gripes was the EVF when I bought the EM1 Mark III. So share your thoughts. And one of my biggest hope for a new camera from OM was to have a better viewfinder. Not that I was complaining with the older EVF, just that my aged eyes can't see too well, especially when manual focusing, so I often need to punch in and magnify to check focus on the Mark III. The OM1 took care of it mostly. But the EM1 Mark III is a cracking camera in so many ways, I wouldn't discount it for what it can do for you however. His answer is that the E-M1 Mark II, the E-M1X, and the E-M1 Mark III all use the same sensor, and their dynamic range and noise characteristics are much more similar than different, even allowing for different image processors between the three models. So he said that looking at the images from any of those models can be used for comparison with the OM-1 to appreciate the sort of improvements they’re talking about. With all of that said, when OMDS says that there is a 1-stop improvement in dynamic range and a 2-stop improvement in noise reduction at high ISO, they’re talking about comparing against the E-M1X.

For video John. If you film in Slow motion 120 or 240fps and SS on /240 or /480 in low light you will love to have those high ISO available.

@@TITAOSTEIN I am speaking of creators. of artists who make pictures, the camera was made for photographers not for people who simply want to make mindless cinematic presentations for the internet which can be handled by a minor function within a mobile phone.

Not sure if you got up on the wrong side of bed, or just live there. First OM doesn't keep on ceasing battery production. This is their first camera model release. Second, I like you am only interested in still photography, but video is now a reality -- like it or not. All camera companies now continue to change proprietary battery models and it's a fact of life. In addition, there are many areas of still photography that will benefit from much improved ISO performance. So you might want to consider accepting current market reality, or find a new area of interest. I feel your pain, but it is what it is.

@@gregm6894 You seem to have accepted the illusion of a complete clearout of anyone who worked for Olympus . The owner of the business has changed not the people who actually run it. The batteries are no longer available for some recent cameras and the customer services dept. have informed me of the fact that production has ceased, therefore I don't understand your argument.
